Are you hearing things or just making things up? He didn’t say “IF”

Listen to it again.

Mate.

I am not the one misunderstanding.

This quote comes at the end of a hypothetical of if Cal was Carlton what he would do, and he says he would keep both picks and just use the leftover pick to pick a third player "if there isn't a club that's going to throw a future first at it"

He doesn’t say that. He said he would keep all our picks because he stated it as a fact that “there isn’t a club that’s going to throw a future first at it” there was no “IF”

But people hear what they want to hear.

The whole segment lists 3-4 clubs interested including at least 1 (Collingwood) who would absolutely have to be offering a future first.

You can believe what you want, but I think my interpretation makes perfect sense

100%. Pies for example have nothing to trade but an F1 and he mentioned them. Theres also been talk of the Crows, the Saints. Several possibilities.

Maybe none of them eventuate, but I think its a stretch to say unequivocally, its not happening.

I think what Cal was getting at is clubs arent interested in trading for the pick, but they might be for the right player. Challenge being they might be trading up blind depending on when the bid for Dean comes.

I think Cal contradicts himself or hedges his bets.

He does mention a few clubs that might be interested in #9 if they thought a player they wanted would be there at that pick but qualified it by saying it would be difficult because how would they know - “they would have to narrow it down to a couple of players.”

Then at the end he says if he was Carlton he would just hang onto to picks 9 and 11 - “cause no one is throwing a future 1st at them”.

I mean he just said team’s might be interested in #9 but won’t be throwing F1s at it, so maybe he’s inferring that they’ll throw 2025 picks at it - but then I thought Collingwood didn’t have much to offer in terms of this year picks, so wtf are they offering??

I have no idea who bids when BUT I remember last year on the footage it shows the Cats calling Austin to give him advance notice they were going to bid in B Campo.

Austin took the call and said words to the effect “all good mate, you do what you need to do” as we had just got past the extra pick of HOF (I think) so Cats and Austin knew bidding was not going to burn us.

The Cats wanted to keep us reasonably honest on the Campo bid but rang to check.

It showed me that where people think it’s all ruthless I actually think it is much more “ you look after me and v.v.”

This is why I don’t think there is any use in acting like Mitchell and Hawks this year, at some stage you are going to need to leverage a relationship or two from all clubs.

What’s lost in all of this is that the AFL have created a 12 month news cycle for this sport and they’ve given people like Cal Twomey license to talk way too much.

The changes to the father son means other clubs can hold you ransom by threatening to bid for a player early. As usual the AFL have not thought this through from all angles. Clubs know they can bid on Dean as early as pick 2 and we will match and it could cost us two early picks. Why wouldn't you bid if you were an opposition club?

We will end up paying a very high price for Dean and Walker.

I think 2 things can be true. Clubs may bid to make others pay a high price, but as ETAT suggested above, they shouldn't be surprised if later on they need other clubs to help them, they shouldn't be surprised if others are less accommodating or demand a higher price. Personally, I think that what we'll pay this year for Dean and Ison will be reasonably fair. The great unknown is what AFL will do with rules for next year... (IMO)

I’d love Oldiewood to spend another F1 on a go at one of our picks this year.

Another nail in the coffin.

They’re going underground for eternity.

If we haven’t planned for an earlier bid than expected and haven’t run through every possible bid scenario, I would be shocked, SHOCKED. ⚡⚡⚡
If we have a potential Dodoro/SOS trying to swing it around and getting everyone to look at moi. I would be shocked ⚡⚡⚡.
DraftingTrading is all about win win short medium and long term. Father son picks even more so.
If you are fair and reasonable then you will give your club the best possible chance to execute your planned outcome.
Last I heard there is only one hard ass left and he has no leverage/ influence over our drafting this year.
Come draft time I expect a boring and predictable outcome. To be unshocked.

Because what goes around comes around, clubs could have and should have bid on f/s much earlier than they did before these changes but they didn’t.

Agree.

Also think there’s a small distinction between between bidding on academy and F/S players. Top teams like Lions and Suns getting further access to elite players with no historical links to the club are likely to be targeted ahead of F/S players like Dean in this draft imo.

Just my opinion, but I think at least two of the academy players will get bid on by WCE or Richmond before a bid on Dean comes at 6 or 7.

Bit of talk about how good dean is and a potential bid by other clubs.

what if another club picks him before our first pick (9)?
Welcome to the last 2 weeks of discussion in 3 threads on this sub-forum. Where have you been?

If they finish bottom 3 I doubt they force a trade at all, a top 4 compo pick in a great draft will beat whatever else they can likely get.
Pays for Dougie and they go again with another top pick in a great draft
I think you'll find that they'll be seeking a huge bounty. They'll get more than that by forcing a trade.
