Analysis 2025 Draft watch

We traded away our first two picks, so this research is more for Hawks than the Blues.
I suspect we'll be involved in the first round of this year's draft as I think some of us expect TDK to take St Kilda's offer, which would deliver a first round compo pick. If Cody Walker has as good a season as people predict, we may look to trade next year's first to get back into this year's draft as well. We can't afford to not be active with Tasmania around the corner as our under 22 list is nowhere near good enough as it stands.

It is a very comprised draft with regards to linked players. It is a shame that we have to trade back into this draft, hopefully we improve our ladder position so the pain of not currently having our first two selections is minimised.
TDK being traded away does not sound like a lovely thought.

I did vow off this board a few days ago and while it's been nice to bugger off from the endless calls for sacking everyone in the building for a few days... The 18s season has just started up again and as an avid draft watcher who has desperately called for our list team to draft some pace and foot skills across the park for the last few years, I thought it fitting to continue tradition and just avoid the rest of the toxicity in the other threads.

So while I'm sure everyone would love to discuss the pitfalls of our list team and our lack of draft picks, commitments to NGA and F/S kids etc etc, lets just try and keep this to what it's meant to be. A thread to discuss the best draft prospects this year and hope that by some miracle we end up with some picks to help address some of our needs.

Some notable names

Zeke Uwland - My pick for pick 1.
Cooper Duff-Tytler
Fred Rodriguez
Sam Cumming
Josh Lindsay
Dylan Patterson
Ollie Greeves
Willem Duursma
Liam Hetherton
Dan Annable
Max King
Dyson Sharp

Unfortunately about half of the expected top 20 are tied to other clubs and we have no top pick but as always there's still lot to play out.

For the Blues, a forward half player and some rebound from Defense stand at the top of what I think our priorities should be on top of our NGA and F/S kids,
Do you have Cooper Duff-Tytler as a top 5 prospect, as we know some players stocks rise over the year, very impressive last weekend?

To be honest I haven't done any sort of pre season rankings. If I did, it would likely be a fair bit different to an actual draft ranking as most of my viewing is based on who would best suit Carlton.

CDT looks like a gun though, similar to Ethan Read at a the same age. I rated his ability to go back and forward far higher than his actual ruck craft at the same age. CDT the same.

First name I'd be looking at if we do by some miracle end up with some picks this year is the Kane Farrell clone of this draft, Josh Lindsay. Rory Wright was terrific off a wing on the weekend for Sandy and probably had a bit more penetration in his kicks and run in his legs than Lindsay from what he showed last year, but he's incisive with his kicking and potentially outside enough to slip down the order a bit. Left peg is a thing of beauty.

Compo pick for TDK and we will trade next years pick into this years, I expect us to have 2 firsts plus Dean
If the compo pick is a top 5 pick we should be moving it for two early teens picks and taking the best two flankers available. Last year it would have been Berry + Travaglia or Lindsay

This year my early estimations would be Josh Lindsay and Rory Wright. Haven't seen a half forward who looks a sure thing to go that high yet but I'm sure they'll pop up through the year.

Two teens probably become picks in the 20s though with the academy and father sons?

If its only TDK that leaves, I do not want to draft kids, Jagga Cody Dean Ofarrell is more than enough as a balance sprinkled through, we need players in that fundamentally make us better now.
There are kids who would fundamentally make us better now currently playing in the 18s

My assumption is that TDK wont be able to pass up the Saints offer, that would give us pick 4 currently, going off last years draft, that would get us roughly 12, 14 and 30, more than enough to refresh the list and that’s before we make any other moves.

So with that in mind we need to address pace across half forward, half back, forward pocket and wing.

As the draft is a gamble i would be trying to use a pick on an established player from an interstate team who’s looking to come home, im pretty sure there is two small forwards struggling to get a game at GWS and other names always pop up that would fill a need.

So give me the Zac Bailey types, Nick Watsons, Ed Richard’s, Berry, Toby Greene, Brent Daniels, Kane Farrell but they need to compliment a slow strong team

A lot of the top half forward types are tied elsewhere this year unfortunately. Essendon has 2 of them and they both looked rather good in the first round of the year. More will undoubtedly pop up as the season progresses but not a lot of names that come to mind currently.

Josh Lindsay is the one for me off a wing/half back, a genuine laser beam left peg and changes angles as well as any junior I've seen with ball in hand.

As lots of the draftees are tied to clubs, those clubs will need picks and points to fit them in, so I’m hoping this allows us to target a player or two from somewhere else and then go to the draft and do the best we can.

I’d be very sceptical trading down a top 5 pick in a compromised draft as well

At this stage most of the top 5 are more ball winners than distributors. Greeves, Duursma, Sharp etc. None of them are particularly exceptional by foot.

Absolutely.

If we can get two decent picks, we take them. Running distributor and small/medium forward to add to our group and our academy and father son picks in next two seasons.

Really thinking mid season draft and SSP may be a friend. Bice yesterday, Davidson and others show that players are out there who can transition in and make an immediate impact. We need some well selected kids, but already have a handful or more kids to integrate over the next year or two. (HOF, Carroll, Lord, Campo x 2, SMITH, Lemmey?, White, O’Keeffe? Moir?,
Charleson?, and maybe Duffy when we get a look. Cody Walker, of course, is a given too) We need a couple of mature types, not half a dozen more kids.

Not anywhere near the level of expectation i have for the now. And if that's not the aim, then we may as well go for broke and cull the lot.
How did Jasper Fletcher and Will Ashcroft go for the Lions last year? Watson for the Hawks? Connor O'Sullivan this year for the Cats?

The top draftees can come in and impact from day 1 these days. There's no building for a few years in the twos with the cream of the crop types now.
