Currently, on paper, the best fits for our needs are Fred Rodriguez and Josh Lindsay.

Rodriguez is a first receiver mid who has genuine speed and can apparently hit lace out kicks on both feet according to his ESPN write up.

Lindsay is a half back/wing with a laser left peg who has the courage and vision to take the game on and cut up an opposition team's defence.

Both have speed and good ball use in areas of need. Keen to see how they progress over the coming months.

If De Koning leaves, hopefully we can use our picks to land us these guys as a silver lining.

I think Fred will end up fairly high, as will Lindsay. Getting both would be quite a mission.

Rodriguez is a bit of a Murphy Reid clone with better pace but probably not quite as good in the contest. If he develops that inside craft this year he'll almost certainly go top 5ish.

Lindsay is everything we need. D'Ambrosio level foot skills. Imo not suited to playing on ball so more likely to be a 10-15 type pick who starts off a flank at AFL level.

Sorry boys, the first kid we'll probably be targeting will be young Dean. That assumes we'll be keeping TDK.

At this stage most of the top 5 are more ball winners than distributors. Greeves, Duursma, Sharp etc. None of them are particularly exceptional by foot.
Ugghhh!!! Matt Carroll has a dynamite left foot and was taken at the arse end of the draft. While not to Carroll's pinpoint standard Cowan (taken in the 30's) also has booming kick. Not everyone needs to be a Top 5 pick.

That said, I love your enthusiasm for draft watching and always an entertaining read whether I agree or not. Keep 'em coming mate. :thumbsu:

Certainly the type of player we'd be after. Apparently one of the hardest workers the Chargers have seen come through their ranks only usurped by Jagga who he worked closely with last year. Looking at shifting on ball this season to use his explosive speed to burst out of stoppage.

Dow Mark II.

Yep, the players we will need to fill the gaps can come in the MSD and SSP periods if necessary. @WalshistheGOAT’s mate Evans at the head of the queue.

While I would like an upgrade, our small forwards(less a couple) plus Gresham and a budget type will get the job done in the short term. Elijah and hopefully Moir complete the forward mix. Not great for ‘25, but Kemp’s absence should assist development. When fit Harry and Charlie become pillars of a juggernaut, a little better structure makes it even more effective.

I keep maintaining O’Farrell will fill a (big) hole in defence. Developing beside Weiters and JSOS will be perfect in 2026. Dean then gets a development year at the same time, and a weakness becomes a strength. Cowan and Carroll form the backbone of the future backline. Add a running distributor and maybe a lockdown small (high hopes for Charleson and Ollie and Campos in the mix)

Jagga, then Cody along with Lord, Hollands’ and Camporeales will add some dash in the middle without the need to reach for other pieces. Walsh needs more time outside the contest to save him from himself and Cripps needs ~20% forward to extend his career and facilitate developing the next wave of mids.

TDK is going to be a centrepiece. If he leaves, we need some attention to our ruck stocks, probably a solid journeyman. We can contend with Pitto at a pinch, but he is also very fragile. HOK coming, but still needs a year or two. Lemmey may be a dark horse to add to the ruck division, at very least pinch hitting (he is not yet a write off as some have him)

We are not far off, and most of what we need is already on the horizon. Talks of a rebuild are nonsense. We don’t need a myriad of first round picks.

I’m thinking identifying 3 players from opposition lists, youngsters with 2/3 years development, forward/midfield types who fit our requirements with the needed attributes we’re looking for…

Not sure how we can manufacture a few more second and third round picks by player trades and/or future picks drafting, feel like we need to identify a number of specific talented players that strengthens our obvious needs…

Also, I’d try to persuade Ollie Murphy back to home, Very talented 200cm KPD who is in his second year, Team of the year KPD in his draft class, 2nd roundish draft pick..

Thoughts on Zac Taylor from the crows and Tom Hanily from the swans?
These would be the types I would go for. Hanily probably a bit hard to get though

The likes of Bice, Davidson, Henderson, Hall, El-Hawli etc etc states that there are hidden gems around state leagues and even lower.

There may be the odd DFA shake out, but overall recycling is fraught with risk.

Agree with you regarding recycling. I think we need to be more aggressive targeting young fringe players at the best clubs. At the moment I'd be asking the question of Hustwaite at Hawthorn and Harvey Thomas at GWS. Even someone like Knevitt (maybe not a need for us now) or Clohesy at Geelong.

I like Hustwaite, but he is not a need, extractor type.

In fierce agreement with Thomas, played almost every game last year and struggled for a gig this year. Been watching him, but we don’t really have the draft capital. Excellent workhorse HHF with speed and skill, with the ability to kick goals. I really like Fog, but would upgrade on speed. GWS are a spectacular list watch, oversubscribed for small forward types and doubled down with more in the last two drafts.

Like Clohesy, but hard to shake loose. Cats have another mature age acquisition in Oliver Wiltshire getting rave reviews in the twos who may be able to be lured away (another Barwon Heads player) Close, Stengle, Miers, Mannagh, Clohesy plus mediums and hybrid types.

Speaking of Thomas and our lack of draft capital, if someone is in the 2s and wants to move club, what’s your valuation? I dont think GWS are unreasonable at the trade table and i dont see anyone who can’t get in the 1s side consistently as having much currency at trade time.

I dont think we have much currency but we still have a 2nd round pick and that’s generally enough to get younger players at other clubs who are on the outer.

Honestly i know very little of them B13, from a search on both Taylor 22yrs who in his junior year was a prolific ball midfielder high half forward while Hanily 19ys is another who can rack up good numbers in the same type of role…
I’m keen to look further into them both, for a better understanding of how they look with some live footage…

Bice would be the perfect fit for Carlton to be honest, that guy is an elite kick.

Cant say I know them extensively, but I was watching their games on the weekend as they fit the bill in terms of age, position, and not necessarily high draft picks or key players i.e. potentially obtainable. and they showed glimpses of something so I'm keen to keep an eye on them for the next few weeks

They do sound like the moneyball profile types 👍

Still very slight and has a bit of a way to go in terms of building his body as an Feb born over ager but he's been awesome for Bendigo down back this year. Pretty much generates all their rebound from the back half in unison with Connor Evans (no relation).

Arr0w you can knock his disposal... But this is one seriously cooked athlete for an 18 year old. Lateral movement at top speed is outrageous

That said he does look to have tidied up his kicking a touch this year, very difficult to stay balanced when you're moving like that though.

Who we talking about?

Oops! Forgot to link the vid

I'm all in on Grlj for us. Great speed and agility, strong in the contest, keen to apply defensive pressure. Obviously willing to attempt the courageous kicks that open up the game with mixed success but that's the best way to learn.

I think he's got a viable pathway into the senior side with the ability to play half back along with his midfield work.
