Wouldn’t we look to move pick 11 into a pick 30 + a F1?

If we stack ourselves with picks for 2026, we give ourselves more options to target Walker AND strategically go after a Butters/ Bailey/ Humphrey. That would be wise if we see ourselves returning to contention in 2028-2030.

I think one of the reasons is the lack of list spots. We'd be less likely to make room for a speculative selection rather than a top rated talent.

If we were going in with 5 or 6 spots open, then I'd agree that looking later in the draft might produce a good return. But we are not.
We don't know how many list spots we are going with, though, and what's the difference between trading up and trading out? The former still requires an extra spot available. I'd be hoping there would be more strategy than trading up and drafting 'best available'. I think we heed specific targets for all this to work.

What position does Ison play and is he likely to get any starting games next season or a lot of development to go?
Will start at a HFF. Will graduate to a full time on baller who rests forward if everything goes to script.

Will he play next year? Hard to say with so much change to our list this off season already, but he'd certainly be a chance if we're just basing it off his talent. Didn't look out of place at all training with us last year over pre season, dominated at stages tbf.

I reckon we'd only trade up if we are targetting a particular player and are pretty sure we can get him.

If there isn't anyone we specifically want to trade up for or aren't sure we could get them, then I'd suggest we'd just trade out and try to get extra picks for next year and make sure get Dean and Ison.

I picked Joel Freijah in our Phantom here a couple years ago. Ison has a lot of similar traits with his size but also outside ability. Fair bit of catching up on this years crop for me to do, but he looks a promising modern AFL sort.
Pretty good comparison. Always remember the game Freijah kicked 7 off a wing, was surprised he didn't go higher than he did. He's going to be a star in a few years time.

Yes. Its always good to see a player has some dominance here and there. Freijah showed that. And i hear Ison showed a bit of that late in the season too.

He was very very good late in the year. Only thing that really let him down was his goal kicking. A few of those 30+ disposal matches playing on ball he also had 2-3 shots on goal too but missed his opportunities.

As I said to Soapy, I think if he hadn't have been injured for the start of the year and came into the season at full fitness he may have pushed himself into the top 10 like Dean has so in some ways it's a bit of a blessing in disguise.

One thing I found interesting though is one of Heath Buck's videos on our up and coming NGA and F/S prospects he mentioned he'd spoken to some recruiting friends who remarked that Ison is known as that kid with the clunky kick... Something I've found puzzling since as he uses the ball well and has a fairly smooth kicking action. Always wondered if they were thinking of the wrong person with those comments

Sorry ctwenty1 but why is it always implied around here that it's the first round or bust in regards to the possibility of adding a draftee to our obvious two targets? It gets my goat a bit because It comes across as a bit minimalist and reductive given what we've coughed up.

In regards to potentially shuffling our picks, why must the aim be singular?
Fair enough

I have no idea who the club want to pick up or where they are placed in the draft

I expect the club will have a strategy around pick swaps etc to achieve their aim.

Not to labour on the Frejiah comparison, but they said the same about him too with his kicking. They all have deficiencies at that age. But good AFL body size and traits are there. Looks a great pickup for what looks like the cost of a bunch of very average picks for us.

Just had my first look at Ison and I concur with what others have observed. Very much in the Pendlebury / Bont mold. I expect Ison to have a far better career than those two though.
You really do have to love BigFooty.

Either this draft gets crapped on as being terrible or we should jump at the opportunity to trade three 1st round draft picks to move up so we can draft Sullivan Robey.

Admittedly, I don’t know much about Robey, but trading three first-round picks for him seems… unwise. At least to me.

It sounds terrible when you think of it that way.

But if you break it down, it's not that bad.

11 will be used to pay for the Dean bid one way or another. 27 F1 will be in the late teens - 20's

I think a deal like 9 + 11 + 27F1(Swans) for 4 + 38 + 26F2(Tigers) is fair enough. Then we trade that F2 for a 2nd + 3rd this year from North and we'll have enough points for Dean + Ison.

We’d be banking on WC taking Duursma and CDT and a nod from Richmond passing on Robey at pick 3

I’m not sure that the Tiges would be willing to trade their 26F2 for Swans 27F1. The rest of the deal is fair.

You would have to know for certain that North would be willing to do the trade beforehand.
