Is the chat about this draft being compromised overblown? The latest ESPN draft rankings released yesterday I think had two academy players in the top 10 and then four in the next 10. It’s not great but its hardly the disaster that’s been talked about previously.
I think in the AA Under 16 Team a few years ago there was a ridiculous amount of academy players but looks like they might not all have kicked on.
I actually dont think its a massive drama anymore with the revised points system. Next Gen Academy is a joke though. Rules are way to loose.

SA have some decent talent, like Marsh and Nairn, dahlitz's foot skills are sublime. Schubert looks a good ruck prospect

Shaping like a good contest. Clearly Walker and Dean watch, but Lindsay and Hibbing-Hargreaves are big watches for me. This SA forwards are a class above most at the level and still think Sharp fav for no. 1

Louis Emmett gives off real Matty Kreuzer energy - love his second efforts in the contest and how he works to get to the next one across the ground.

Has anyone taken an interest in Harley Barker from SA?
Really like the look of this kid as a winger who could add run and skill to a team. Has the running motion of a winger who can cruise at good speed but can really put the foot down and generate some speed. His kicking looks good. Is also a long kick. Could be a late first round pick but if you take academy selections out is earlier.

This year’s draft crop isn’t exactly receiving rave reviews, but it could still fuel a frenetic trade period at the end of this season.

If we don’t trade our compensation pick for TDK, I would love to see us use in the draft for Sam Grlj. Explosive midfielder and one of his strengths is his disposal by foot.
You add Grlj to Jagga and Cody next year, that’s a pretty dynamic midfielder for the future.
A young core of Cody, Jagga, Grlj, Dean, HOF, Cowan, Campo boys, Ollie, Carroll and Lemmey is pretty decent for the future.

Love Grlj but I'd still go Lindsay if we're in range. More flexible so could be thrown around a bit based on areas of need at the time.
Grlj could be a Max Holmes level midfielder at his best however, very keen on him if we can't get Lindsay. Genuinely freakish athlete.
We have a full complement of established mids already accounting for the best part od $5m of the salary cap. That includes Smith to integrate as well as Lord not being able to get time in the guts, Ben Campo banging down the door for opportunity and Cody at the following draft.
We can only fit so many in. Grlj is a decent prospect and does upgrade in ways, but the timing doesn’t seem right to me against needs. Our woes are connection and scoring first and foremost. We will (likely) have one “decent” pick to use in the open draft at the next two, with father/son and NGA picks likely to eat up our draft capital. Has to be used to fill gaps rather than the cliched ‘best available’.

I feel the same way. Don’t need more centre bounce core midfielders with jagga and Cody to come in. I think we need guys with pace and skill on the flanks and wings that might occasionally rotate through the middle.
We have good young talent for the back half of the ground but the forward half needs real attention. A winger and a medium small forward would be handy.
I'm happy that his hygiene habits are up to scratch, can he hit a target by hand and foot repetitively, pierce zones with his kicks and run a 10 sec 100m? If not, next.

Grlj is the type of midfielder we need, can also play him off half back. He’s kicking in my opinion is better than Lindsay and his explosiveness is something we have craved.
Who knows what Walshy will do next year and to have Jagga, Cody and Grlj would be an elite midfield going forward especially with Crippa not getting any younger.
We desperately need players around the ball and going forward who use it well and are elite by foot. To me, Grlj fits that perfectly.
Lindsay is significantly in front of Grij in terms of elite disposal by foot, pretty sure he is rated top 6 by most recruiters.

Grlj is a less accurate/damaging kick but still skilled.
Very similar to Holmes or B.Smith.
Kicks it long and accurately to a contest but not one to pick out a target in traffic like the elite kicks of the comp do.
