No way Dean lasts that long. Cal Twomey has been clear on Gettable that Essendon's pick is as late as he is going to go.
I think Pomme on Blue Abroad nails the senario (with the exception of Mitch McGovern not getting re-signed), though I think he's a bit light on Bombers expected pick.

I think they WILL bid on Harry Dean, but the thing i hadn't considered (more overlooked) was that the early bids 2/3/4 on the academy players will force us back and therefore Dean will be cheaper even if Bombers do bid.

I also like his choice of player selection (Dean, Lindsay, Ison) but at the end of the day, as long as we nail Dean & Ison, I'm not too fussed about the 3rd pick (but not another small forward FFS).

wierd there was an NGA at Pick 33 then

Oh well

If Freo rate him that highly and we do too I suppose we will match
They were able to match, the exemption range was 1-20 that year, 1-40 the following. Freo just opted out of doing so.

From 41 onwards in both drafts, it only required being matched with the next pick, rather than a points system.

EDIT: my bad, as per Blue and Silver, Indigenous kids that were Next Gen Academy eligible were excluded from the bidding system until pick 41.

Had to dig around to find this.

Classic AFL with its random rules in random years

You might be confusing the timeline - that year, clubs weren’t allowed to match bids within the top 40

It is both. Confusingly

Indigenous kids in Metro areas couldn't be matched by Freo Port, WCE and Adelaide before 40. Other NGA's couldn't be matched before 20.

According to HS Richmond very keen to bid on academy / fs prospects. "On a war path" was the quote used. Hopefully Dean is last in the pecking order.

Also, WC genuinely keen on Dean. I assume we let them slide up from 13 to 9 or 11 for points to make sure that doesn't happen.
Listening to the chat on youtube i think the main emphasis was on the academy picks to keep Gold Coast and Brisbane honest. Doesn't mean they also couldn't bid on Dean. I find this strange considering the sweet heart deal Richmond got for Rioli.

I think might have got a couple of fringe players on obscene contracts.

Idk, I tuned out as it was a bit depressing.

Ok. Well enjoy looking for the worst possible angle on all future developments

I can’t exactly pinpoint why, but for some reason Jevan Phillipou really reminds me of Steele Sidebottom whenever I watch him.

Read a headline (article was behind a paywall) that Ross Lyon was only interesting in meeting one player at the draft combine and that they will cause havoc at the draft. Let me guess, Harry Dean? This campaigner and his campaigner of a club are now my most hated club by a long way. For me they make Cheats FC look like the darlings of the competition. Just a putrid ass stain of a club from top to bottom.

RMC guide is out.

Cal said today on Gettable there’s a sense if the Bombers don’t take Schubert with one of their two top ten picks that he could slide to the end of the first round.

I think if we are doing the Adelaide trade we will want the third rounder so it can slide up to help match Ison

And probably want WCE to upgrade our 43 to 41 in that trade too. Every bit of points helps if we are trading 11 into 2026

EDIT: we can't get 41 back as we traded that to them originally.

Did he start by saying he gets annoyed people forget that the bid will slide back because of the academy pick matches... then do exactly that himself?

In his scenario - Dees bid on Dean at #7:

That pick slides from #7 to #10 which means 1389 reduces to 1148 points. We have 2164 points total (from picks 12 and 14) which would leave 1016 (pick 15).

If we hold our picks we end up with Dean and pick 15.

If we trade 9 to WC for pick 13 before the draft it would slide to 16 so we'd have 14 and 16 which is 1948 points.

If we trade with WC we end up with Dean and pick 19.

So assuming the Dean bid comes from Melb - a trade with WC costs us 4 spots in the draft. They'd need to add 34 to the deal for that to make any sense. I'd push for their 2nd rounder next year. Even if we go 100ish points into the negative for Ison (which I highly doubt) it will make next to no difference because of the Walker situation.
