How did we not get a key position player?
Because we stuck too closely to the 'need to keep one list spot open' practice, which I think is a 'rule' which we should be prepared to break.

Lets see how Liam Hetherton goes at the Swans because he was the only one left who you might put your money on to make it. If he does make it, are the folks on this forum prepared to say that our preparation this year malfunctioned somewhere?

That extra list spot ultimately depends on who we pick up with it, no?

And while Hetherton has plenty of upside due to his athleticism, he's just as much of a gamble as keeping a spot open for Elijah or White to get instead. If I had to pick between Elijah (if he kept on the straight and narrow) or Hetherton for the next 10 years I'd probably take Elijah due to his versatility.
I'll go out on a limb and say that The Kangaroos might have drafted the best defender with an early second rounder.
I'll go out on a limb and say that The Blues have drafted the best performed defender from the u18s this year. Whether Thredgold ends up the best of the lot is fairly irrelevant to us matching a bid on Dean.

Smilie struggled due to injury - not because he’s a big bodied mid

A tigs mate mentioned he wasn't exactly pushing for selection even when he played his VFL games. Obviously harsh given he only had the 4 games but either way big bodied mids are becoming tough gigs to land. Clubs only want a couple as they cut down your outside run if you over-do it. Will Brodie another good example.

Was there some tactical advantage I missed, after we had traded back from 9 and 11, I didn’t think there was any real advantage to WCE?

Part of the wheeling and dealing between with Allen and Starcevich was that WCE wouldn't bid on the Brisbane boys and that they would bid on Dean to push the Brisbane boys out further?

Would anyone like to borrow my hat? It's made of the highest quality tin foil...

Smillie is a good kick too. Could easily have played a wing/half back role if needed. Hes not slow or unskillful. People just seem to think he is because hes classed as an inside mid. Hes a great athlete

I think this goes back to a simple case of underrating Dean.

Brisbane had him at 1/2 equal with Uwland according to their list boss, Sydney had him at 6 on their board, WCE said they had him at 3...

It's not hard to deduce from that that he was rated as a top 5 prospect by many teams this year, including Carlton - Hence why we matched a bid at Pick 3.
Exactly. I have heard people on pods with way more knowledge than me say he was/is one of the best talents from the draft.
