Carlton want to pull out of Opening Round because of a “road heavy” start to the season.
What a pile of dribble.
Great outcome. We'd much rather play Geelong. Awesome to get them first up. We'll win or we'll learn. Hopefully both.

Happy to play Geelong, It’s Carltons excuse that is dribble.

"We had to play across town several times last year!"

Aw come on now, 2 interstate trips in the first 6 weeks will be absolutely horrendous for the poor widdle Bwoos, setting them up to fail for the rest of the season!

Are you sure? My mail is that we're only being fixtured to play teams that finished lower than us in 2024
But which journalist is going to complain about our fixture being the easiest next year though ;)

This bit is so so funny:
I have to admit, when I was laughing at them I didn't realise they were literally including games on the other side of town already! I'd assumed they were at least basing it off interstate games. 🤣

It's this killer mindset that will see Carlton romp to a premiership every time no doubt.

Not sure how I would feel about this and would mean we wouldn't attend games at home if scheduled then unless a public / shcool holiday the next day:

Attendance wouldn't be amazing but made up by I imagine far higher viewership with less Sunday overlap.

School holidays and public holidays make good sense. Between the two there are plenty of different Mondays to go round. Labor Day is on different dates depending on what state you're in, there's King's Birthday, Easter Monday etc

I’m happy for Sunday night and Thursday night games so long as we aren’t involved in them.

More Thursdays and more Sunday nights might also mean more 5 days breaks for Clubs which the AFLPA won’t like.
So what Channel 7 may want doesn’t necessarily mean they will get.

Personally I'm happy to play Saturday and Sunday arvo all year long. But I doubt the club would want that. Listening to the Roar Deal last week I think, Mike Whiting mentioned the club was privately pretty miffed about being shunted off to the fixture's Bumfck Idaho after Round 15 last year.

The other Lions podcast I listen to pretty regularly has commented multiple times how they don't think having a 9 day break and then a 5 day break and then another 9 day break etc etc was very conducive to playing good, consistent footy early in the season. Which I must admit makes a bit of sense. We certainly performed better when we got into a consistent pattern of 6/7 day breaks.

The 7 day break throughout the whole Finals Series was perfect for us.

I'm also not turned on by it, but it's also the biggest timeslot in the NFL these days, so maybe it actually will work?
The NFL can't play Saturday games or Friday night games because of college and high school football which inherently limits them to Sundays anyway, plus Monday and Thursday nights. It's more a reflection of how big the NFL is - their regular season games outrate the finals games of MLB and NBA.

I must admit it feels a bit ancient to me compared to how the AFL and NRL work here, but they still have like 10 games that start at 1pm every Sunday. More out of necessity than tradition I guess.

10+ million supporters per team... You could probably schedule matches at 2am on a Wednesday and still get a full house.

It's much more exciting IMO - for finals it makes sense to have games separated, however in the regular season having 5+ games on at the same time is ideal particularly when there's 16~ games each week
