Really no excuses for a Home quali then prelim next year
I’m sorry to quote just you, Rustica.

However, this “no excuse” commentary is flippant

Nothing is guaranteed at this time of year based on just the release of a fixture

All fixtures in our competition are unbalanced and driven by dollars at the remote and to a lesser extent the turnstiles.

Too many variables, tackle each game and ride the momentum swings as best we can is all we can ask for.

On the AFL website it says

"We understand our fans want certainty and in these first 16 weeks we have scheduled a number of exciting marquee matches that our fans can plan around while the dates for Rounds 16 to 23 will be confirmed four to six weeks out, and round 24 to remain floating"

Is this right? Round 17/18 are school holidays so it makes it difficult for families to arrange any holidays around the footy!

Essendon v Gold Coast added to round 24 likely to impact our game against Esssendon - ours could be the first game of the round you’d think.
I think you’re right. It depends where everyone sits on the ladder to which Essendon team we will get on the night. You wouldnt likely see them travel to GC first then come back for our game.

Wouldn’t the extra game be a week later anyway - plus Gold Coast are in Adelaide for round 24 so also would have to play early to give both of them some days off - if neither team are likely to make Finals then they could get the Saturday slot otherwise they probably play Friday

Ralphy's reporting that the game is likely to happen on Wednesday the 28th or Thursday the 29th of August. Just before the pre finals bye

I’m a little worried about this. But Mitch Cleary floated this suggestion;

Thursday (open of round 24)
GCS v Essendon

Wednesday
Port v GCS

Thursday (closing round 24)
Essendon v Carlton

With his suggestion being it would be more exciting to end the season with Carlton v Essendon due to bigger clubs etc.

Issue here is, if someone gets a concussion in the standard round 24 time (Thursday - Sunday) they are out of protocols for first week of finals. In this situation they aren’t. We are also placing the bye the week after round 23 & not going into finals with a bye like everyone else.

I’m concerned from a 7 viewpoint this makes perfect sense, ratings wise & they will be pushing for the AFL to “compensate them” for losing the 2 opening round matches, that are going to rate significantly higher than round 3 or what could quite possibly be a dead rubber in GC v Essendon on the bye weekend. If we have a disaster from our viewpoint, a dead rubber btw Carlton & Essendon is also better case scenario than Essendon v GC which will have far less viewers.

The door is open for this too as the AFL hasn’t said - the weekend of the bye or after round 24. Rather the GC v Essendon will be “part of round 24”

We also won’t know for months, as obviously the final round is confirmed as late as possible.

That’s a real mutha ….. Had pencilled that in for a trip but it’s sounding like the GC vs ESS game will be an abnormal time slot (e.g. Mon, Tues, Wed) which may affect our game timing, though it could = a Thurs night game too (bonus, if flights can be secured)

Added to that is the late notice on the last round rostering with the floating fixture b/s.

Not sure I would like a Thursday game the week prior to the pre finals bye. Could mean 17-18 days between games leading in to a final. Nit sure would benefit a relatively young group to have that long to “think about” an up coming assignment.

This decision has “knobs on it”. Surely they could have rearranged the early season byes of the opening round participants to play it during that window.
