Finally, after a succession of bids, Richmond at pick 8 selects Sam Grlj.

SNAPSHOT: “A tenacious, lightning-quick prospect who breaks the lines with flair and frequency.” – Michael Alvaro

Few players combine flair and substance like Sam Grlj. The Oakleigh Chargers speedster came on strongly as a top-ager to enter the top 10 conversation, catching the eye with his raw pace and dare. He came through the Chargers’ ranks as a dashing half-back last year, playing 10 Coates Talent League games to earn selection in the Vic Metro and National Under 17 Futures squads.

Grlj then elevated his game on the back of a strong preseason, lifting his disposal average from 13.8 to 20.3 with more midfield time in 2025. His scintillating performance in one of Vic Metro’s early trial games catapulted his stocks, though Grlj produced a relatively steady National Championships campaign in comparison. He even reverted back to his role across half-back by the end of it.

Most recently, Grlj starred at the National Draft Combine with a pair of top-10 results. He ranked second in the 2km time trial, stopping the clock at 5:59, while also placing ninth in the 20m sprint (2.926 seconds). The midfielder is a Carlton supporter, but models his game on the likes of Zak Butters and Nick Daicos – mainly for their ability to change gears moving from inside to out.

STRENGTHS:

  • Competitiveness
  • Dare
  • Evasiveness
  • Line-breaking
  • Running power
  • Speed

IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Accumulation
  • Composure

Over to Essendon for their pair of selections, GWS Goose .

Essendon with their first of 2 selections will take Dyson Sharp.
A lot has been made of what the kid can't do, but he is comfortably the most accomplished player in the draft.
HE also brings in loads of leadership and high quality character.
Has the potential to be a future captain and I think at the moment strong character is very important to Essendon .
He also a terrific inside mid and will and should be plug and play straight into the team rnd 1.

With the second pick will take Xavier Taylor .
A defender with class. Plays on smalls and talls and offers run off half back.
He was best on in the grand final and has been picked on a best available basis.

I agree with you GWS Goose on Dyson Sharp. While everyone's entitled to their opinion, my opinion is that he's been overly whacked by some for his perceived flaws. Anyway, with Merrett likely on his way out of the Bombers, I think he's a perfect fit. And with Jordan Ridley also making noises about leaving (plus some other uncertainties in their backline), I think X Taylor is a great fit.

Finally, I think Essendon would have nailed their draft picks!

Over to Melbourne, and Maximus 2011 is up.

Personally, I think Hawthorn's pick will be very interesting. I think there's an argument for several different player roles, aside from the consideration of just going "best available".

While their midfield beat our midfield, they then lost their next final because their midfield was beaten, so they could improve there. Ollie Greeves has been linked with them, but his style of play seems to have dropped out of favour, so they might pass over him and hope he's there at their later pick.

Apart from Gunston nearing retirement, down back Jarman Impey and Karl Amon are closer to the end than the beginning, so any of the medium defenders - Josh Lindsay, Jacob Farrow or Oskar Taylor - could come into play for them, the exact pick depending on what style of play Sam Mitchell most favours.

And finally a small forward to complement the Wizard would not be entirely out of the bounds of possibility.

So, Mitch Marsh is a good option - will be interesting who they select for real. And of course, direct impact on who's available for us at the next pick.

I guess who they pick also depends upon who they are targeting as a free agent. If they feel Ben King is coming, Marsh would be very unlikely I guess.

Surprised Farrow is still on the board and was expecting that he would be gone by now and if that was the case would have been looking at the likes of Barker, Taylor, or Lindsay.

But given Farrow is still available he is the obvious choice and if it plays out this way I would be a tad nervous if I was Fonti.
So taking Farrow with the Giants selection.

Next up I believe is GWS Goose for the bombers

Essendon select Josh Lindsay
Plenty say he might be the best kick in the draft class.
Got a stack of ball at the champs and is another who is talked about as a leader which is important for where the bombers at at.
Plays off half back currently but players with his vision and kicking are valuable on the wing or anywhere really.

That's basically a whole day, so to keep moving I'll make a selection for the Bulldogs. If Maximus 2011 gets back on-line he can change it if his preferred draftee is still on the board.

So, without further ado, Western Bulldogs will select Blake Thredgold.

Based on the rumours, there are a few different players in the Bulldogs' sights, including Cam Nairn, Oskar Ainsworth and their own father-son Will Darcy. However, none of those I expect to be first round selections. The biggest hole in the Bulldogs' list is key defender, and this kid is the second best KPD this year. He can tightly defend, or intercept, so he has multiple skill sets.

West Coast Eagles are up next - txbyhull over to you.
