If this is coaching it is some of the most bizarre coaching I have ever seen - deliberately deciding to change what was working to something that wasn't and then not changing back until the game is gone.

It makes a little more sense that players simply go away from the plan, stop running, go risk averse.
Both options are coaching

The first quarter we kicked 2.7 and moved the ball pretty well and should have been well up, middle 2 quarters were unwatchable as we went super slow and didn't look like scoring, then is the last we went fast again and kicked 5.5 (and once again missed some very gettable goals).

They didn't decide to change. We are so focussed on defence and contest that there is no way we can attack for 4 quarters. North pressure was low early.

Look at every game we have played. Pressure down from opposition we run as we have freedom and natural talent. As soon as opposition put pressure on and limit space we close up and become defensive and no answers. Been happening for 3 years and clubs now pick us apart

As I have said for 2 years now, Top AFL coaches have told me we are the easiest side to pick apart in the AFL

We are poorly coached, drilled and never have answers. The data says this

It makes sense to me and similar things were raised when we went on our great run in 2023, we play well and were winning when we were playing attacking football, moving the ball quickly, playing on, it seems as soon as the coach steps in, we turn to crap. We have started so many games really well, then totally fall apart as the game goes on, there has to be a cause for this.

These fade-outs or in game changes aren’t new, they have been a hallmark of Voss’s tenure since he started.

It happens every week, and has since mid last yr.

Charlie, imo, let the cat out of the bag a bit last wk when he said "you obviously can't play that way for 4 qtrs" when referencing their great first qtr.

Our players go out with the mindset before the ball is bounced we only really have a short period of time for attacking play, and believe that's the only possible way about it. The "obviously" part of Charlies statement makes it seem like it's a given and most of the game is a grind. It's only a grind because we make it one, as Soapy V said (and I agree), we're so overly focussed of contest and defence that we default back to that made as soon as the game settles.

We just don’t want it enough. Took until the last quarter from a coaches blast to get us mentally tuned in.
Everyone knew what was on the line today, except the players. They just don’t care like the supporters.
I can’t believe how many were crying in the stands. The club should be embarrassed today.
It had the same stench of round 1 unfortunately.

I have posted this for over a year

The players are frustrated. They feel they do everything asked but feel they have no answers against good sides. They have apporached the coach numerous times about it. He has no answers excpet we need to get better and contest for 4 quarters. That is Voss's only answer.

I have this from the best sources

We have no training, structure on where to run, how to link and where to move ball. Each week we have got worse and have no run as we are fully trained on contest and defence. We are now paralysed.

I said it a few weeks ago that we are now at the stage this could fall apart quickly. The players have no more to give and feel they have no answers

They do what's told yet are getting worse. This is a coaching issue first and foremost before anything else

Here's a simple solution. Start dropping senior players who are cruising

IDGAF who they are replaced with and IDGAF if the reserves players coming in aren't playing that well at reserves level

Has anyone considered the fact that maybe they're not playing that well at reserves level because they may have become disillusioned????

Maybe the senior players will re-discover their intrinsic motivation for playing at the highest level and to the best of their abilities when they're kicking the dew off the grass at a suburban ground and realise they aren't rated as highly as they thought??????

The culture is toxic and favouritism/lack of opportunities for growth/challenging the reserves players to step up is one of the main reasons
Unfortunately this ship has sailed, this should have been happening from the start. Too many players know they are safe, too many players came straight back in from injury rather than proving themselves in the VFL, too many players were left in the side when they were in poor form instead of fighting for their right to play in this side.

Now he is left with a bunch of blokes who do as they wish because there are no consequences and VFL players who have stopped busting their guts because, ol favourite is in his position and won't be dropped because of his name and his pay cheque.

Voss has brought this on himself through soft coaching and wanting to still be a part of the boys. If he had dropped some of these guys along the way, they have two options, shape up or go elsewhere. We have or had guys who would get everything out of the talent they had and we have guys who have the talent but use it just enough to stay competitive. We have allowed this to happen for way too long.

Voss has lost this group and I feel he has dragged them too far down a dirt track to get them back on the main road.

on field leadership then.. we need players to be able to read the game and make an auditable call at stages during a quarter. i.e. go on the attack, get on the ropes, let the oppo throw some punches, etc etc

Don't agree. The Leaders are doing what they are told

Do you want them to ignore the coach on ground and do their own thing?

That would make sense if we weren't complete smashed at the contest on the weekend.

"Our players go out with the mindset before the ball is bounced"- this is my point.

Look I am not saying the coaching is great, and in a season where we expected to push into top 4 losing to both North and Richmond in all likelihood ends Voss' coaching career but I think there is more going on (on top of being towards the top of players used and debutant's for the year) and I fear that simply replacing the coach will not solve the issues.

No one has said it would

I think you can see it most pertinently in Cripps and Weiters, who were the most vocal and public defenders and supporters of Voss/the system, yet now I think they've officially fallen off the wagon as they now also look lost and disjointed with how things have gone.

They were probably the last ones but I think if Voss/the coaching group has now lost those 2 he/they are in serious trouble. They would be anyway, but, losing the 2 guys backing you the most hurts.

Generations lost. Sad
So very true. Sad and depressing.
When assembled, 160+ kids at camp were asked who they barracked for. 7 kids (including my daughter) raised a hand when Carlton was called.

My daughter said that one of the kids then yelled out, 'I only barrack for the Blues because my parents force me to!'
The group laughed.

Realise it's just a school camp. Still, it's a sobering sample base. Over a dozen plus country/regional primary schools, and 10 VIC AFL based clubs. Yet barely 5% of camp kids openly admitted they supported Carlton.

Way to win hearts and minds 🙁

Why take Cooper Lord off.Could have put him on backline for run or wing since was being beaten on ball.Lots of older small forwards doing very little.
Give the boy a run.
Silvagni backline and Lord only bright lights of year.
I bet youngsters are ones who are dropped this week disaster.
Other older players safe with current regime.
And keeping Durdin on who was doing what exactly? Should've chucked Cripps forward and thrown Coops in the middle.

Is it too much to ask for Carlton to, at one point in my life, be a genuinely good football team?

In my early 30's and I can honestly say we've never been the best, or even in the best two, football teams in the country at any point in my conscious memory.

To my mind, Carlton is about being better than anyone, succeeding despite every ****er in the industry wanting us not to. Performing for the monogram. Reflecting the history of our proud club.

Will we ever become 'Carlton' again?

That 'Carlton' is dead.

It really sucks mate...

Fish rots from the head. Ask yourselves what is the common denominator throughout all these years?

The answer is the board.

They bring their mates in, they use the club for their own personal gains, they don't care about on field success.

Carlton Corporate Football Club.

This is my biggest fear with Graham Wright too... he will want to make changes, but the board has the power to handcuff him and it would not surprise me for one second if they do...

Until winning premierships and playing for the fans becomes the priority, rather than making deals, $$$ and virtue signaling... we will continue to revel in mediocrity.

That wouldn't be Somers Camp would it?

If so, I haven't thought about that place in years. That was one of the absolute highlights of my late primary school experience. Just a brilliant place that changes kids for the better

I hope your daughter loved it.
Yes, it was Lord Somers Camp. It's incredible.

So glad you got to experience it. I too have such happy memories of my Gr.6 school camp there. Jumped at chance for my twins to go. Only 6 spots for their school. Youngest missed out.

Brilliantly run and resourced school camp. My daughter loved the entire experience. Especially rowing in the creek, indoor archery and indoor rock climbing. Where she then abseiled out of the building.

Phenomenal Environmental Centre. Kids were also able to feed crickets to bandicoots and watch sugar gliders at night.

We visited on family day and didn't want to leave! Truly special spot & experience.

Sam Docherty got 1 coaches vote!

Sam has been a wonderful player, A.A. as well. Been through so much, the way he has gone about is so very admirable.

Truth is he needs to do some soul searching and realize that he needs to evaluate what he wants to do post footy playing

days. I don't care how many possessions he had on Sat, all I noticed was that he looked for the super safe options and that

meant usually he went 30 metres backwards. Hopefully he plays out the season mainly in the two's. Give the kids

opportunities, just play them. Find out whether they are made of the right stuff, or not.

Cripps and Weitering were our most dedicated hard working Soldiers leading by example.

I can only imagine how difficult it is to be able to keep that up week after week while watching all the half arsed efforts from so many team mates who appear more interested in picking up a paycheck and don't put in a 100% like those 2 do.

Weitering must be so frustrated with those around him in defence ... as well as forwards who can't convert
I don't blame those 2 Soldiers for the team going so badly

Weitering is the one standing about 20 metres behind the centre square and calling for the ball switch from in front of him at the wing/half back position- he was doing this consistently from late in the first quarter - this switch slowed down our run and movement- and gave North momentum in the second quarter.

We’ve been doing this all year - this loss of territory and switching without any gain has been killing us all year and our opponents know we’re going to do it and “rope-a-dope” against it until we inevitably lose possession with a skill error or “bomb-it-long”.

Everyone in the football world can see it except for the Numpties in charge of our football dept.

But then again I’m not qualified to say.
