Honestly, was anyone surprised by today?

This has been coming for a while and we have beaten bugger all in 12 months and more

As a football club we are a rabble. Our last flag was 30 years ago. We are a shit club that is as bad as the Saints and Fitzroys of the 80s. Our record proves this

Things need to change
Supports like to pot the Saints for a distinct lack of success, but in this century they have, on an overall basis, been a better club.

Since the glorious 95 premiership, we scraped in against all odds to the 99 GF and barely fired a shot with the only glory being ensuring the Dons didn’t get pass the PF to go on to why would’ve been a premiership for them.

Our best shot in the last 20 years has been under Ratten. Our run to the PF in 2023 was a magical ride but we were running on fumes by then because we failed to fire a shot in the first half of the year.

Far too many have demonstrably declined. In particular, our “A-graders” are just not playing with the same effort and intensity. Lazy and going through the motions as if there is no longer a buy in to what is being instructed.

This isn’t a solution that involves clearing a couple of assistants. For better or worse, Voss will have to fall on his sword and be moved on, along with the assistant coaches. As for the playing group, if they want to establish a good culture then the tail can’t wag the dog. We need leaders that inspire and engender good behaviours. What type of leadership is there in the forward line? Absolutely nothing. There’s no one forward of centre that you could point to as being able to the direct towards. In the middle, our leader is the “get on my shoulders” type but we need a brain. A hodge type there. As for the back line, we have Weitering there but I feel we have really missed Newman - he seems to be the smart general back there.

There undoubtedly needs to be big changes at season’s end.

After what’s transpired since 2015 nobody involved at the club should be thinking there is appetite - or trust to get it right - for a scorched earth rebuild of the playing list. To endure another 10 years like the last would be catastrophic to the point of an extinction event for the club. There is no point of drafting a bunch of 17 years olds with unproven potential when we have ****ing idea how to develop that talent or build a list. If I had anything to do with it I would completely blow up the off field…Lloyd, Austin, Agresta all go, the board too, albeit that is a lot harder to do…but not the list.

I would however be happy if we traded a high paid but underperforming player and got 2 or 3 proven, quality players in their 22-25 year old range in return. Maybe even get rid of 2 of the stars and bring in 5-6 new best 22 calibre players. This group needs to learn some hard truths. Send one of their mates to another club. Show them this is a results based business, not somewhere you get to be paid top dollar just to hang out with your mates if that doesn’t lead to success. The playing group are far too comfortable with their “status” in the game which is disappointing given how little they have really achieved. That is what needs to change the most IMO.
this is what needs to occur.

It’s an off field issue as well as on field.

Someone kicked a goal…think it was Williams in the third…set shot.

He gets up and about with a bit of a celebration to G up the forwards around him and barley got a rise from Curnow and others

The players don’t care for Voss and are phoning it in….again

I’ve said it before and will say it again. The amount of times Weitering goes down carrying on like his leg has fallen off only to run out the game…

Incredible player but I’m convinced he is not the leader many make him out to be.
Next captain should be Jsos.

Weitering you described it perfectly.

There was nothing about today which should have surprised anyone who has been watching us this year. It was coming. It was just a matter of whether it happened against Essendon, West Coast, or North. Or whether it came via a pumping from upcoming opponents. This loss tells us nothing we didn’t already know.

We aren’t back at square one. We’ve got pieces we can build around. But what we choose to build on will be key.

I also think some of the disrespect shown to Cripps around here is pretty poor. He’s had a bad season. But he’s given more to this club over time than just about any player I can remember.

Do we want him to stay?

With gaps in half forward, pace through the middle, needing good ball use and a small forward with our lack of draft capital - can we actually afford him to stay?

Only if he takes 850k for 4 years... and tbh, that would be absolute max offer I'd be giving him...

How is that about Voss tho? Not getting up around Williams isn't about Voss, it's about players being idiots?

I'd say Charlie Curnow is a lot better than the way he has been playing.
And the sooner we get the right culture, mindset and suitable forwards line coach,
AND
a Head Coach
Who has a clue about modern day game style,
the faster we make use of the list talent we actually have,
bring out the strengths in our not so talented players, and bring in new blood, then coach them well from day 1!
Letting Curnow himself largely off the hook with that. Curnow is a big part of the reason why the culture and mindset is the way it is. He reminds me of Joe Danniher at his worst, intentionally half-arseing and clowning about so he doesn't have to fully face the fact that he's a long way off the player he should be

Its not about Voss…It’s about the fact that some senior players just “dgaf”

They weren’t interested in generating energy…everyone is in self preservation mode. They know the season is done…they want to coach done while there at it

Unlike the OP, I have never been nor will I ever be embarrassed by Carlton.

I do have a few thoughts though based on who I know within the club and just generally

This is not a bottom 4 team, nor is it a team that sits 6 and 8 at this time, they are better then that. They are a team that should be playing in the ealry stages of the finals with better success building within the list.

The build up within the club each week is as good as any clubs and that is clearly reflected by the constant way we start matches. At Q time you have Voss and his team and the Players and it is clear that half the team has disconnected during the 2nd term, After half time it is totally clear the whole team wants to be anywhere but on the ground.

I am not saying Voss is to blame for the position Carlton finds itself in but it seems to me and a few I spoken to that Voss and the Players are not on the same trajectory regarding going forward and the players are not that interested in anything he has to say.

I think we are too far into Voss's tenure to try and work out if his team around him or him his self is causing the disconnect with the players. He has built his confidantes around him and would be unfair to ask him to dismantle that at this stage. The only way forward for the CFC that I see is to end this now and sack Voss and from what I am hearing I wont be waiting long for that to happen.

The spray Voss allegedly gave binns for not following the plan

Austin
Name the outside runners and small fwds Austin has brought in?
Aside from cerra for.pick 6, which pacy mid has he added that played today?
Acres- 2 yr contract
Zac Williams- 6 yrs
Evans, Fantasia
His best period was last yr draft and trade
Exactly

People keep forgetting Austin joined us pre COVID. Been around a long time. Needs to go with a few others

You have a point and yeah, Charlie will need to do some self reflecting- he looks like he's sinking at the moment. As it's more a team wide issue - if we solve the macro then the micro sh ould improve to.

Look, if the club doesn't swing the axe at selection this week, I'm seriously questioning whether I'll renew my membership next year.

Some of the senior players' efforts today were an absolute disgrace for AFL footballers. The kind of mistakes that would see a kid sent straight back to the VFL with a "sort this out if you want to play seniors" warning.

If we cop a 100-point belting because of it, don't pin it on the youngsters. Point the finger at the senior players who deserved to be dropped.

Cerra butchered the ball going forward nearly every time, showed zero defensive effort, and probably cost us four goals single-handedly.

Saad's lack of effort, especially in the second quarter, was blatant. One goal in particular had him standing there, hands on hips, not bothering to help when it was his turn to step up.

At the very least, those two need to make way for Wilson and Ben Camporeale.

I said it in the game thread, but we didn't lose today because of what the kids couldn't do. That's way too easy and a complete cop-out.

The season's gone. It's time to start building for 2026. Enough of the veterans' half-hearted efforts. We need proper accountability now.

If this group actually cares about winning, they need to stop blaming everyone else and own their actions. It starts at selection. Make the hard calls now, and it'll make the next ones easier.

Well I guess we can ask the players who dont want to play under Voss to leave. Unfortunately we wont be able to field a team if we do that lol
Have you enjoyed following a team that plays arguably the dullest brand of football in the league?
