Geelong don't pay overs though. They'd offer him at most 1-million of which we'd match being a RFA. Geelong if they were keen would do a "trade" because they won't advertise the real offer of 1 million + "hidden extras" (equating to 1.5 million).
Yep. That’s exactly how it would go down

Yep, vs genuine traffic cones in 2 of the 3 weeks. Overall we still lack class on our list imo. Hence why the absence of Newman, Elijah and Harry etc early in the year was so profound. Is it an insurmountable gulf vs other teams? No. But we'd absolutely benefit with a few more hard running ball users like most of the best teams have right now.
A bit from column A and some from Column B.

Still think you sell a few of our current players short. There are some really good ones developing. Might take a year or three, but our recruiting has been good, not perfect, but good.

Would still love a Lindsay and/or an X-factor smallish forward to go with our workers.

This is the year that Elijah knocks on the door of stardom. Would have smashed through it if not got his personal setbacks.

Little brother a year or so behind

What the emergence of Will White has shown us is that we should not be scared to lose players who are on the fringe like Owies and injury prone players like Jack Martin.

If Zac Williams plays less that 15 games this season i would be looking to offload him, just too unreliable.

Losing Matt Kennedy who is doing amazing things at the Dogs, but would have meant we remained unbalanced through the midfield if he stayed, for this same reason we should be prepared to let Kemp and Young leave.

It's just not feasible.
We'd have to throw in a decent draft pick to get someone to take his contract, and we're short on those.
We've got him for another year, let's just hope he stays fit. He can obviously play.

There is frustration around Zac, but if he stays fit for the better part of the season we are a much better team. The small forwards are going to “take turns” stepping up, but he has that extra string to his bow of being an elite kick as well as versatility to cover mid and back if necessary.

We will never get full value for money, but he can still end up contributing considerably to a flag (touch wood)

I've thoroughly enjoyed the development/opening month of Will White and Matt Carrolls careers. Two players I was very keen on seeing in the pre season as they show as they showed the qualities of modern footballers in their positions. Durdin coming back in 2022 form has certainly helped as well, Jack down back too distributing beautifully. So there's been some progress on that front.

I'm not one to say we don't have a 'talented' list, but I am one to say it's still very imbalanced with limited depth in many key roles. When we have a near to fully fit team out there we have the balance needed. But as soon as some of our key distributors go down or are out of form it once again rears its head as others don't have the skill to make up the difference. We experienced the same thing with the Cuningham, Martin and Marchbank era. When they were up and going our team functioned like a well oiled machine with no obvious gaps across the field, they filled the holes on the flanks we had beautifully. Unfortunately it just never lasted outside the run in 2023.

At the moment we have about 5 or 6 quality distributors around the park with Newman out. Adding more to the list would allow us to better cover for injury through the year. Imo that's the main reason we have such massive gulfs between our best and worst footy. Even at our worst our midfield still wins a bucket load of the ball, but our kicking skills and turnover game completely abandon us.

Teams like Collingwood and Brisbane have far more quality users across their list and thus can cover for when some miss far better than we do imo. Coleman goes out in 2024 for the Lions and Zorko goes down back and plays at an AA level all year. It's a luxury we simply do not have as our trade and draft work over the last 4-5 years hasn't addressed that dearth of elite ball users on our list well enough.

We can effectively give him away, my understanding the bulk of his contract was front loaded so would not be the massive salary dump that is imagined but frees up a list spot and more importantly forces us to develop/find someone more reliable for that role.. Whilst he remains, we will naturally default to giving him first crack.

I don’t think we “default” to giving him first crack. He thoroughly deserves it (when fit). He doesn’t fit in our current defensive set up. Teams like GWS set up to utilise a defensive seagull link man, the role suited him, although could defend when required. GWS still rely on Whitfield, Ash types which is possibly why they don’t measure up in September.

I think this is a lot more about system than it is about talent.

On ability there is no question he deserves his spot, regardless of inflated contract however IMO his body is too unreliable and my preference would be we move past him and get someone else we can bank on for 20 games a season and not run the risk of having to be subbed off during Q1 every other week. The person that replaces may not reach ZW top end peak, however the reliability outweighs this IMO.

Weirdly, I'd almost say that we'd be better off trading Kemp and keeping Young.

Young should be looked at as our new Casboult. Limited, average at best, but positionally versatile and probably happy to stick around on a base contract and play max 5-10 games a year as injury cover.

Kemp is the one who should and likely would be wanting assurances on role and game time. One of these days, we may get to see him in the forward line alongside both Harry and Charlie, but it ain't gonna be this year, and he's out of contract at season's end. The injury probably doesn't play into our hands from a value perspective, but if SOS shows interest again then something like Kemp and a third for a couple of second rounders might be worth considering. One second this year to take to the draft for a pacy small or outside ball user, the other banked for next year to help cover the early Walker bid without us needing to dip into the following year's picks.

I won’t be surprised if he gets another, reduced, contract when his expires at the end of next season. Depending on his level of professionalism in preparation, there could even be scope to renegotiate and balance a reduced figure over a couple of years.

So Marshall is on $850k so we can't spend more than that otherwise he will get annoyed? LOL what a load of tripe! that isn't how the AFL works and paying NOTHING in terms of draft or trade for a potential superstar.

And since when has the AFL been a normal workplace? Ridiculous comparison.
But in saying that would happily do a swap. Take Marshall at 850k and they take TDK for 1.7M and we use the other 850k on getting a fast outside mid in via trade or genuine small forward half type. TDK v Marshall isn't double the output / results.

It's very simple. It's not even about money.

The key to happiness is having shelter, food, clothing, high-speed WiFi and a blues premiership once a decade.

Pretty sure...
In order
High Speed WiFi (Less important if you've got a GF ticket)
Carlton Flag
The other stuff

A few issues with this.

We're not offering TDK $1.7mil, so by replacing him with Marshall on $850k we don't magically gain another $850k cap space. Odds are our TDK offer is $1-1.1mil, so maybe $200k saved in your scenario.

Marshall also isn't a free agent - so we're likely giving them back the TDK compo pick in that deal as well, which would be a real "feels bad" deal. St Kilda get TDK and a first rounder for Marshall? Carlton get Marshall and maybe $200k cap space for TDK? Yuck.

Was not talking in terms of genuine trade option. Merely highlighting 1.7m for a ruckman regardless of ability is madness when you have good ruckman like Marshal at 50% of that outlay.

if you had a hypothetical choice between Marshal on 850k and TDK at 1.7M, it is not hard to see which way you would go.
Doesn't impact us as we are not the ones paying the 1.7m, however we will be paying overs to keep him regardless.
Depth of list is created by spreading salary cap deeply not by tieing up that sort of capital in a ruck
