I can understand If he left for Geelong but saints I just can’t understand. I think they have good youth but they get rubbish crowds and have no culture
Maybe TDK has a realistic view of his own capabilities and potential for improvement, and $1.7m/yr is over valuing him compared to what proven AFL stars are getting paid. Also, he may have a view that Geelong’s ageing list is no guarantee of future success over the next 7 years.

In this context giving up $12m over 7years on the possibility that Geelong or Carlton might play or win a grand final is a roll of dice and no guarantee. What’s 100% certain is the $12m contract to play AFL football with StKilda.

Be very surprised if he doesn’t sign with StKilda.

As it stands, I'd bump up whatever we're offering JSOS by $75k a year and drop TDK's offer by the same. Not fair that a heart and soul Blue is left holding his todger, waiting for a "potentially elite" ruckman to decide just how overpaid he wants to be.

Let Tom know that the longer he holds out, the greater the chance we start doing the same with other pending contracts too.
Nah…just pay Jack what he deserves.

What one player does shouldnt dictate what another player gets.

Keep it fair and simple,

Negotiate a fair deal for each player.

Good.

I want him to stay but on team-friendly decent coin.

Don’t begrudge him if he goes, but reckon he’d look back with regret in years to come. While it’s plenty of extra cash, there’s more to life than just dollar figures.
Is TDK really enjoying playing at Carlton at the moment? We’ve won 5 games and had 7 losses this year, and 7 wins and 14 losses since July last year. 🙁

Football is a part of his life but not everything and will be his main source of income for the next 7 or 8 years. It’s not something I think he’d rely on to bring him happiness….be a miserable 12 months for him if he did.

Yep, if he’s not happy at the Blues then it’s an easy decision. But all reports are that he loves the club, his mates, etc, which may give him pause.

l don’t pretend to know what he’s thinking, but I suppose my point is that there’s lots to consider for the long term outside of the dollar figure (including integrating into a new club/team environment, expectation and scrutiny to perform, impact his contract would have on his new club’s list management, etc).

FWIW (not much🙂), I think he’s gone.

Thats true. Hard to persuade TDK to pick success (us) over $ (saints) when success looks pretty unlikely. Probably same with Walsh next year unless we can turn things around.

Another reason we need to make a call on the coaching team now if theyre not up to it. Can't afford to give them another year and end up being wrong.
Think we left it too late.

As I've mentioned a couple of times before, don't underestimate the Paul Connors influence on TDK or the noise generated by his agency with TDK's situation. This goes beyond sentimentality and his agency is notorious for being difficult and driving up the price of their players. They use every dirty trick in the book (e.g. draft tampering) to the point of being fined and threatened with deregistration as an agent in the past.

Without being in that inner sanctum, it's very difficult to read those tea leaves. My personal take is that his intent is to engineer a way to get to Geelong, but I'm as in the dark as most.

Geelong!
Yes I think you are 100% correct SB.
This drawn out process is most likely a game of smoke and mirrors with eyes firmly on the desired target.

I had lunch with some players last week. Didn't get too much juicy info but did get 1 one thing.. HMacs knee is a concern and he may need surgery to address it. Would likely be 6 weeks out if that happens.
The way the season is going they may as well rest him up for 2026. Get him fully fit for next year. Walsh too. There’s plenty of available players.

If Toms management peddles a huge figure, how dumb will they look when the offer is on the table for Tom to sign and it’s not even close?

If it results in an increased offer, that's a win for them and makes them look good to their client.

Scenario 1: TDK accepts stupid money from St Kilda (ie. TDK's decision is financially motivated)
Is that really the case, though? It's not as though we're charging forward on field and he's jumping off. He's not dropping a substationtial amount of on-field success while getting a lot more $ it would appear.
