It depends how pick 8 is valued this year. Riley Beveridge said today that Jagga Smith would've been pick 1 by a long way in this draft
Put it this way. Dyson Sharp is a genuine chance of going number 1 this year and he's basically a less skilled Ryley Sanders who went at #6 in his year.

This years crop has some talent in it but I'd much rather the proven talent.

Pick 5 and Florent from Sydney (at a minimum) for Harry.

Keep TDK and use 5 to lure in either Bailey or Bergman + change.

Brisbane will probably want to deal in future picks though due to their academy boys - not sure if we can accomodate that given Cody.

Walk away with Florent, Bergman and keeping TDK.
Id do that deal. Would be targeting some cheap small fwd options too if possible. Ours are just miles off it

Rosas, Wardius, Gothard types.

Florent is playing VFL and has a deal till 2029. I reckon we could get him cheap if we take on his contract.

With Bergman, aside from costing picks he'll require a massive contract. Near 7 figures and hope he turns into an A grade mid. Doesn't really make sense over paying for him on potential, after letting TDK walk. Massive risk.

Bailey would cost similar but is more accomplished, however, would need to become more a mid/forward rather then forward/mid, to justify what itd cost to get him.

As much as the big names are exciting I feel like the moneyball approach might be better for us.

Nice observations.

What so many here fail to realise is that we have had a significant reset in our list management and have accumulated some very high quality youth in the last couple of years.

As you suggest, most of our over thirties will or should be gone by round one 2027. Many supporters are panicking that our premiership window is closing whereas in fact it is just opening.

While theoretically not bankable, we have some elite talent coming through as we speak. Even more so over coming drafts. We finally have a period of father son bounty coming, as well as a much more effective NGA Academy. It is quite sad that rules around academy and father sons have been modified off the back of the Suns academy and perhaps the Ashcroft boys.
Cody Walker will cost us an arm and leg in draft capital terms. Other clubs have had the best of both worlds with greater discounts and a more “friendly” points system.

I would support a minor clean out of our oldies next off season. We have blooded enough good kids of late that we can largely replace them.
let's be honest, we have very few oldies, full stop.

And even fewer of any consequence...

It seems to be gaslighting.

The list, per se, isn't the issue...

It's what happens - and doesn't happen - out there, on game day, is where we're primarily stumbling.

Bergman, thus far, is a fringe player...

Overpaying for him would be dumb +++

Florent too, sidelined in a mid table team.

Both should be on the cheap side...

Bailey? Frankly, I'd pass (was great tonight) but been AWOL a lot...

I would imagine Port would be asking us for our TDK pick and in all honesty I'd hand it over for Bergman in this draft. Sounds like considerable overs but I really don't rate this draft at all so personally I'd be fine paying that.

Florent offer them up a future 2nd, they're in no position to ask for overs if he's stuck playing twos half the year.
Hopefully a third rounder back for extra for extra points for Dean

It is an “interesting” list for sure.

Bergman is potentially “still coming” and may improve further. To date he doesn’t warrant a premium. I equate Bergman with one Mitch McGovern. A bloke who has some impressive highlights but without a massive body of work. Years later we are still waiting on Gov to reach his potential.

Florent is fascinating as well. Fabled story of his mother’s sacrifices, and she relocated to Sydney to be with him. Do they turn that around. Florent has been passed over in favour of the more highly rated distributors like Roberts and Bice. We are wanting to upgrade our ball movement, do we settle for an “upgrade” that remains second best elsewhere?

Bailey’s best is irrepressible, but the gap between his best and worst is immense. He should/would upgrade our forward mix, but we would be paying a premium for doing so.

It is rare around here, but what is wrong with seeking out players at the draft to fill these roles. Everyone saw the impact McCarthy made against us as a mature age mid season draft pick. The bargains are out there. We have taken a few throws at the stumps in that sphere and came up trumps with Cooper Lord.

Our draft hand will be limited for a couple of years. While it requires patience, we should be looking at kids and state league players to upgrade incrementally rather than further selling the bank for over priced “stars”.

Did we see the salary cap explaination from Joey M? “Every club has the scope to have three million dollar players on their list” Newsflash, we have double that number, six millionaires by season, nit the “usual” three. We have to look at budget options across the remainder if the list. It is why we have accumulated 18 players 21 and under and are looking to increase that percentage in coming seasons.

For every “star” we trade, we will need to offload mature depth on middle money in favour of cheap draftee and rookie contracts. It is unsustainable. Austin and co are kicking goals in recent time at the draft table. With less urgency to fill gaps in the list, we will have more freedom to draft for needs in future drafts. Fortunately our father sons largely align with needs over the next two drafts.

Joey M is smoking crack if he thinks lists can only have 3 million dollar players on their list with the cap increases.

Florent was a mainstay of a side that made a grand final last year as one of their key distributors, hasn't got on with Cox seemingly and found himself on the outer. He and Roberts are not one or the other, as we saw plenty last season.

Bergman compared to Mitch McGovern - One has dealt with injury issues and professionalism standards their entire career, the other is a young up and comer who's barely out a foot wrong and is extremely durable.

Bailey - His best is irrepressible, and while there is a large gap between his best and worst (like every small forward in the comp) his worst is still better than the rubbish players like Motlop and Fantasia serve up most weeks.

Doubt we'd be in the market for all 3 of them unless we had a genuine exodus but each of them would be an instant upgrade to our list. Considerable upgrades too.

Now we're talking pick 5 for Bergman.. hilarious
This thread is in denial, big time. We are an aging, floundering side with second-tier players who just aren't good enough.

We also make the mistake of thinking that all of our 'elite' players must be basically as good as their best form no matter who they are surrounded by or what happens to them.

Nup...! We need to rebuild.

Something I was talking about earlier about our fringe players. Think Binns. Teams like Collingwood, GWS, Suns, Richmond, Geelong. Players like this, their equivelant. They will offload them, but they will be able to trade them, they will get at least a third or fourth round pick. Binns will be a delist job for us.

Who's fault is that and how do you 'fix' it? Our players won't get any younger or more durable and the competition is not going to stop just for us to catch up. I'm sorry but we have to get at least a bit worse before we can get better.

I think it's time to seriously rip the band-aid off. We can't keep going to the well with players that can't run or kick. The list is absolutely bereft of speed and skill. One simple rule: if you can't kick, you can't play for us anymore. Some players will be given the opportunity to rectify their kicking under the new coaching set-up, but they are on extremely thin ice (eg. O. Hollands + Campos).

Keep to build around:
  • Silvagni
  • Weitering
  • Cowan
  • O. Hollands
  • Lord
  • Smith
  • De Koning
  • Kemp
  • Walsh
  • E. Hollands
  • O'Farrell
  • Newman
  • Hewett
  • Curnow
  • Carroll
  • Boyd
  • Cincotta
  • O'Keefe

Too early to judge/young player:
  • B. Camporeale
  • L. Camporeale
  • Charleson
  • Lemmey
  • Wilson
  • White
  • Duffy
  • Moir
  • F. Young

Listen very carefully to offers:
  • Cripps
  • McKay
  • Cerra
  • Saad

Retain as a placeholder if no suitor can be found:
  • Fogarty
  • Williams
  • McGovern
  • Fantasia

Actively remove from the list:
  • Motlop
  • Acres
  • Docherty
  • Durdin
  • Binns
  • Haynes
  • Pittonet
  • L. Young
  • Monahan
  • Evans

I'm not necessarily talking about the de-listings but I'd argue that the rest is ripping the band-aids off a little too gingerly. The wounds will just fester if the treatment doesn't sting.

I tend to agree, but I don't want to do another SOS style rebuild. We need to retain some experienced players to tide us over while we rebuild on the run. My departures are specifically targeting players who butcher the ball and/or can't run.

Agree. Binns says something about our recruiting. I was told by Dandenong Stingrays 3 years ago after he was drafted that he can not kick and does not listen to coaches. So those criticising Voss for spraying Binns at 3/4 time should consider the context and apportion the blame to Austin.
