If we're looking to the future our pay brackets should look something along the lines of this. Obviously open to change.

(Genuine star players)
Tier 1 - Charlie, Harry, Weiters, Walsh, TDK, Cody, Jagga

(Very good but not quite stars)

Tier 2 - Cerra, O'Farrell, Elijah, Moir

(High quality Role players)

Tier 3 - Cowan, Motlop, Ollie, Carroll, Lord, Kemp, LCampo, BCampo, JSOS

(Role players)

Tier 4 - Ison, Fogarty, Durdin, Wilson, Boyd, Binns, Cottrell

(Who the hell knows)

Tier 5 - Charleson, Lemmey, O'Keefe, Duffy, Monahan

Seems like a pretty good spread. I'd imagine in the next 2-3 years we'll start looking at replacing some players like Hewett and Saad etc with other quality players from other clubs via trade or FA. Ideally 1-2 more in that Tier 2 bracket.
Who is Cody?

Warner is going back to WA.....bank on it...

On CPH2135 using BigFooty.com mobile app

Warner to WC, TDK to Sydney, Harley Reid to Carlton.....

About the only framework that I'd be willing to entertain. I'm aware those three players aren't all equal, balance it however it needs to be balanced, but that would need to be the core of it for me to even sit down at the table.

Signing tdk for that amount could really restrict us going forward...

We might start losing some other players...
If it all turns to sh*t ala Grundy style, clubs are much more adept and open to accepting and off loading large contracts, salary dumps etc. In that eventuality we lick our wounds and move on. Concentrated positions create out performance diversification protects it. We won't get to the top of the hill without a few large concentrated bets. This being one of them. I have issues paying up for ruckman and left footed part time forwards and he is both! And personally I am not sure I have seen enough consistently to warrant the price tags being discussed (yet).

But at the same stage if he heads up the output curve ala Gawn (2 ala's in the one post I might add, so must be profound insight) and it clicks over next few years, it will be deemed money well spent. If not hindsight interrogation will kick in and we will want to burn the place down! Binary outcomes, deals like these.

I think the fact the list has been curated largely via the draft last few years and shrewd re negation which has allowed us to table the offer, is a great spot to be in. If he takes an additional 3.5m over 7 years (1m v 1.5m) no idea on veracity of numbers just using what has been oft quoted then no issues, you move on.

Thing is though with free agency we are not going to get well recompenced via draft capital given likely finishing position so you may as well try and get him for slightly unders like they are doing and put our best foot forward.

What the impact of the other big contract holders that have all taken unders to stay have on his decision making I have no idea. Quite a bit if he is tight with the group, I dare say. I know personally I left quite a bit on the table years ago to move with two senior colleagues / friends that I just knew I would learn from, super smart guys, we trusted each other and enjoyed each other's company to build the business we wanted to.

Don't underestimate that piece if they are genuinely close relationships. Good test of the playing group culture. Talk is cheap in these cases at a club level, fascinating to see which way he goes. You hope the advice he is getting is sound and big picture. My tip for what's it's worth. He stays.

Why is O’Farrell so high up in tiers even though we are yet to see him in action.

And we’re likely not going to be major players in top-end free agency for a while
We have brought in Jagga Smith as a top end talent in the most recent draft and l imagine they are also banking on Cody Walker being a top 5 draft prospect, don't see top tier free agency being a major focus if we can keep bringing in good young talent.

Warner to WCE
Pitto* to Sydney
Reid to Carlton

The question mark is very much around resilience. He doesn't take the knocks well and really pulls up sore after rucking by himself. The way he plays leaves him "open" to a lot of hits and injuries. More than most

They are really working on how they manage him this year along with some technical stuff to better protect himself. Sometimes he will ruck by himself, sometimes Pittonet will play and TDK will play forward. It will be more about getting through season the best he can than best line up each week. Even little thing like Silvagni or Young taking some ruck to give him a breather
When you say the way he plays leaves him open, on what way?

I know it’s only one example but after our loss to the Giants last year where Tom was smashed in the ruck, Jeff White did a segment on the ruck battle and pretty much called out Tom’s tactics and imo his coaching.

I remember watching the game at the time and being frustrated that Tom didn’t seem to try anything different, after the segment from White I was left wondering if we have the right ruck coach for the type of ruck Tom is.

So my question really is, can Tom’s durability be improved by being tactically better at his craft and does he have the right support?

Reckon you might be a bit too generous to the swans here. Instead of Pitto I'd trade them the rights to any children Cain Acland might have.

The rest seems about right.
“And in news today former Carlton player Cain Acland’s son has kicked his 100th goal in the elite boys competition, the first to do so in history. At 16 he is 227cm and 124kg, he is sure to be the best athlete in the history of the world”

Ha. Ha. The jokes on the Swans though. He only played 21 games for us. Just felt like a lot more.

Pretty obvious that this deal will be structured in such a way as to fit our other big long term deals in.

Worth keeping in mind that a bunch of our prior big deals are almost done/ are done.

McGovern, Martin, Williams, Cerra, Hewett, Saad, will probably all be on less now

Martin's gonna be really cheap!!!!!

I agree. I think it is absolute madness to commit to a 7-year massive deal for a player who will be 26 when the deal starts, who has never remotely sniffed All-Australian, and who has had a significant injury every season. I cannot see TDK being worth big money at age 33, so we're really paying $8m per year for what, 3-4 good seasons? That's crazy...

Even more so when that player is a ruck/forward who is a) not particularly good as a tap ruckman, b) is not very good as a forward.

The cost isn't just the money. It's all the other flexibility that we get alongside it; salary cap flexibliity, draft flexibility (with an extra first round pick), positional flexibility.

I think we're in the process of a mini-rebuild of our list; we need to transition away from relying on Cripps/Docherty/McGovern/Saad/Williams/Newman in key roles... we've gone out and targetted Smith to go alongside a few others (Cowan/Hollands x2), but there's plenty more needed there.

If nothing else,we would be insane to make the TDK call right now. Why not hold off and wait for free agency? What's the rush? Can we at least see where we stand mid-season? See how Silvagni goes returning from injury, see what O'Keefe and Lemmey look like with another preseason in them, see what the midfield looks like with Kennedy out and Smith in, with Cripps and Docherty a year older?

Rebuilding on the run like the Cats did pre 2022 imo.

They brought in Holmes, SDK, Stengle, Close etc who went on to play a major role in their flag.

Imagine the club is hoping the same for our youth, but signing TDK up long term should be an absolute priority before Tassie or some dump like the Stains come and pinch him for free offering a godfather offer as a RFA
