Why would Geelong trade for a RFA? The scenario if he wants to go is -They make an offer which he accepts , we can match it if we chose to. If so he can sign for us or a trade is forced.

However if they are offering $1.5 mill and us $1.1 mill we have to offer $1.5 mill to force a trade. If we did he'd accept our money and our salary cap is blown to smithereens.

That's why teams pay overs for free agents - because in all probability there us no draft capital used.
Geelong traded for Dangerfield and Cameron who were both RFA’s

You match the offer to force a trade. Doesn't mean that player is coming back to the club if we match the $$$.

Same occurred with Jez Cameron.

If that did occur you take the money and picks and go hard at Butters or Reid.

A pick in the teens as compo would be a disaster beyond belief.

We need to prepare for life without Tom. My mail is 100% gone to Saints as he chases the dollar and SOS is all over him.

He can **** off for all i care if he doesn’t want to commit and history shows they rarely sign on when the contracts are always put on hold. If he wanted to stay he would of been locked in already.

I have to admit. I feel he is gone as well. I could be totally wrong but he does not fill me with confidence when he talks.

Warner to WC, TDK to Sydney, Harley Reid to Carlton.....

About the only framework that I'd be willing to entertain. I'm aware those three players aren't all equal, balance it however it needs to be balanced, but that would need to be the core of it for me to even sit down at the table.
What table? TDK is a free agent. If he wants to get to Sydney he gets there.

It’s true but Dangerfield only got them picks 9 and 28 and I think the Cameron trade was something like 15, 18, 25 for Cameron and two second rounders.

It’s a better deal but still not great value.
Obviously if they did go down this park they won’t get market value for Tdk but you’d assume they’d get a deal done that’s better then the compo pick

A formal long term deal has only been put on the table in the last week or so.
Need to understand most of these players are guided to a extent by Managers who are seeking a positive outcome.
He will stay, if he leaves won't be the Saints.

My gut feel is he stays. For the very top salary earners/trade targets (top 1%), the guy that leaves (if he does) is very confident in his ability.

TDK wouldnt be given his up and downs. Sometimes he has been smashed (Witts/Xerri). To move for the biggest of contracts would mean incremental stress. Dangerfield and Cameron, yes. Buddy yes. TDK, no.

Any intel on who we will take with the last list spot? Or will we just leave it free for the MSD?

Hearing the same from a very reliable source…but who could blame him…for an extra $400-$500k a year we would all leave our current workplaces

Hypothetically... (Mind you I expect TDK to sign and all this to just be nonsense anyway)

Which midfield set up would you prefer?

Tom De Koning - Adam Cerra - Sam Walsh
Blake Acres - Patrick Cripps - Sam Docherty
Jagga Smith - George Hewett

Or...

Marc Pittonet - Harley Reid - Sam Walsh
Blake Acres - Patrick Cripps - Sam Docherty
Jagga Smith - Adam Cerra

The latter, by a country mile. But lets not kid ourselves that is the choice. Harley Reid is a generational player a la Judd and 21 years old. TDK is a solid ruckman who had a really good 6 weeks in 2024 before getting injured.

A more realistic question is something like: Which core do you prefer for the next 5 years:

Option A: TDK, Curnow, McKay, Walsh, Cerra, Weitering, plus the young guys we have in place (Smith? the Hollands brothers? Cowan? And the rest a bit speculative), and surrounded by a few older blokes heading into the twilight of their careers (Cripps, Hewett, McGovern, etc) and whatever bargain basement guys we can find. No cap space or flexibility, and no draft capital (our first pick in the 2025 draft is currently Brisbane's second round pick 36).

Option B: Curnow, McKay, Walsh, Cerra, Weitering, the young and old guys already in place, a relatively normal draft hand this year, and some really good cap flexibility (enough to chase a superstar like Harley Reid, or add 2-3 good players in key roles around our core).

Honestly, I don't think we're winning the flag this year; and I can't see it happening with this group right now. I'd much rather have the flexibility of Option B to look for ways of improving around a solid core, not lock ourselves into the 'slightly above mid-table, but not really a contender' position we've been in for the past 3 years (which is still a heap better than

Just thinking about the changes we've been through since Voss took over....

Potential changes to our round 1 team this year compared to our R1 team in 2022:

In: Haynes, Boyd, Cowan, Motlop, Acres, O Hollands, E Hollands, Kemp, J Smith, Walsh
Out: O Mac, Newman*, Setterfield, LOB, Owies, Fisher, Kennedy, Martin, Pitto^, Williamson

Up to 10 changes
1 forced (Newy)
9 new recruits
5 draftees

Voss gets some flack for not making sufficient changes to the team and not playing youngsters but he really has turned over the list whilst making finals in both years post that 2022 season

To be fair Tom would only be saying what his agent has told him to.

Understandable, he is entering into negotiations for one of the largest contracts in AFL history.

I really don't think he has decided yet......... He has all year and a lot can happen.

Isn't Austin responsible for this?
