We have to let TDK go. We need the pick and money to bring in needed players

I would also trade Walsh. Big call but he isn’t a game changer for us and if we can get a first round pick and more plus some more SC we do it

Some runners and class with good skills and some more youth is what we need

Another pre season into Carroll Lord Campo twins Wilson HOF HOK Moir Lemmey Young Cowan and with Smith it can change quickly. I still strongly believe we have the talent IF we can get the best out of it

However, this must be added to better coaching and development

Free agent don't match - DeKoning, Band 1 compensation (Top 10 pick, to trade for players)

Out of contract, do not re-sign - Motlop (trade for pick in the 30s?)

Delist/Retire - Docherty, Evans, Carroll, Fantasia, plus a couple of the kids that aren't going to make it.

Never fit, trade for late picks - Cottrell, E Hollands (late picks for F/S matching?)

Contracted, but free to good home - Binns, Pittonet, Durdin, Moir, Boyd, Fogarty, Acres.

Marquee trade bait - Curnow or McKay, Walsh (Multiple 1st round picks, to trade for players)

It almost pains me to say this but IMO the star to get rid of to clear cap space is Cripps. People will say this is madness as he is a loyal champion but at his age he makes the most sense. Hewett is older but far cheaper so won’t clear as much cap space as moving Cripps would. It’s upsetting and heartless but it’s what we need to do. He has been at the club for a long time and we haven’t been able to be remotely successful.

If we can turn Cripps into 2 best 22 quality players like Bailey (or Bergman) and Florent then we might have a chance. Weitering, Cerra, Curnow, McKay, Walsh, SOS and TDK (provided he signs at our price - otherwise he can go too) will all be in their primes, while Elijah, Ollie, Cowan, Smith, Campox 2, HOF, HOK and eventually Dean and Walker represent a next generation that is capable of contributing soon.

Are others seeing something in Carroll that I'm not? Admittedly I don't watch as much football as I used to, but is he anything more than a hard-working foot soldier.
Played 9 games in his career and shown he can hit targets in the corridor when he's got time and space.

I see a very promising prospect, whether or not he continues to improve is another question but imo he looks a natural Newman replacement in time. Seems to find the ball and intercept pretty well too at this stage.

Not hard enough. That's my biggest concern.

Looked great in 1 VFL game.

He needs time but he's getting exposed every week. I was shouted down when I said it should be Boyd playing instead. Being proven right weekly now. Gets pushed over like a newborn calf.

Boyd not playing if fit and available is insane. But not out of keeping with this club administration/coaching. Idk what Voss has against him.

He was playing like a man possessed in the VFL today. Actually sprinting and repeat efforts to get handball receives and get the ball moving.

No doubt he'll return to the side playing lockdown back pocket while Saad runs around doing god knows what up the field being the designated rebounder.

Liam McMahon kicked anther 5 goals today. Yet we decided Frank Evans was a better selection. What an absolute joke. List manager needs to be sacked asap. It's like intentionally picking up the worst player available. Beyond comprehension.
I have a strong feeling it was a Voss call. Loves his small forwards even if they are not AFL standard. Credit to him I guess for wanting a list for the "modern game" but no point clogging it with spuds who are not up to it.

Losing TDK is a start and I really hope we are aggressive in any move we make with that pick but I find the idea of trading Walsh, crazy.

We have many issues and Walsh has struggled this year but people are making out like he’s been crap for years, he was 3rd in our B&F last year, a point off 2nd, he might lack skills but he always busts his arse, which is a hell of a lot more than some.

I like the idea of making tough calls and teeing some draft capital but as a general rule, start with the oldest and work your way down, add the conditional players or the players in a position we have an oversupply.

That's the type of player we go for. That's unless we've run out or think the next hard-working foot soldier will still be available with our next pick, so we are free to reach a little.

I'm not being facetious, we seem to love the 'no nonsense' 'yes man' player and are scared of recruiting surplus to our immediate needs.

I think we have a serious problem underestimating what it takes for a player to excel at AFL level and also in reading the vagaries of each draft pool. This is why we have so many small to medium sized players with few tricks.

We think having an overabundance of what we take for grit (but it doesn't work like that in practice) will get us over the line. That's the only way I can rationalise it.

Considering he’s played about 5 games and is getting picked, I’d say we should cut him a bit of slack.

If we can get hard working foot soldiers with rookie picks, we will do ok.

He’s pretty awkward but I wonder if that’s just a youth thing

Agreed. This season is done so spell Walsh for the rest of this year, McKay too and possibly even Charlie and get them right for next year. They are all capable and deserve another year before we should consider moving any of them on.

It probably means making a call now on whether Voss should to stay or go, so he doesn’t keep flogging a dead horse to save his job, but so be it. We should spend the rest of this yer playing young kids or fringe players to see if they can take the step up.

IMO if TDK wants top dollar then let him walk to St Kilda but if he’s happy to stay at our offer then he is very much part of the plan to improve quickly next year. Sadly IMO due to his age Cripps is the one to move to clear cap space and rebalance the list quickly.

Carroll is a gangly 19 year old coming off a year of battling OP.

Other than being a prime suspect for a Vossy spray (as we saw with Binns today) I think expectation should be well and truly lowered for him. I like the traits he's got - Penetrating left boot, natural run and carry player and a good interceptor - but he's essentially a fresh draftee. For that expectation I think he's been pretty bloody good.

Said it earlier in the week though, the non selection of Boyd is simply hilarious when you've got Carroll there in his place who gets pushed around and is still adjusting to the speed of the game.

The only conclusion I can come to is the club have no faith in Boyd, or they've realized they're stuffed this year and have been quietly blooding the youth as we've been going this year without any real mention of the shift in selection strategy.

Wouldn't using our 2026 1st be a big risk given Walker?
We'd be able to find a way to get the points if we had to. The bigger concern is us sucking enough next year for it to be considered overs as a trade.

Likelihood is we won't be getting a pick ahead of Cody next year so our pick would be getting moved either way.

Trading Walsh wouldn't be the best move to make this year anyway...

Draft is weak and asking for a FF when you don't know where that pick ends up is asking for trouble.

Like I've been saying, need to accept the fact that this playing group is regressing big time.

Losing TDK is only going to compound things further... our midfield is already struggling very badly... imagine having a lumbering Pittonet as the main ruck instead... (took his customary 1 mark v North LOL)

The compo pick for losing TDK is not going to bring in a player with >= value to TDK. So we will be WORSE off next year like it or not.

This is why I want us to trade Harry. We should be able to get a 2025 1st + 2026 1st. This does 2 things for us:

1 - It gives us an early enough pick to get Lindsay (a type we desperately need)
2 - It gives us invaluable currency for next year's draft

Walsh leaving as a FA next year gets us another compo pick...

Losing TDK + Harry will put us right in the frame to finish last next year.

1 + 2 + match bid for Cody.

We can also trade the 2026 1st we got for Harry for a very good player as 1st round picks next year will be invaluable and we won't need it to match the bid anyway.

So we're bringing in three very highly rated kids + a strong player via the 2026 1st we get for Harry this year.

"starting with the oldest nd work your way down, add the conditional players or the players in a position we have an oversupply" ... mate that's going to get us **** all trade capital mate... absolute **** all... so you really don't like the idea of making tough calls at all...

Please don't spout that Richmond 2016 BS again too...

Again, not the point. We need to do right by Carlton while the going is good, not potter around regarding what's someone 'deserves'.

I think I've decided the game plan and coaching inflexibility is the problem.

Sam Walsh was All Australian in his 3rd season. He was our best player at 21.

Under this game plan, he has been injured a lot, and has had his game completely blunted.

This guy was a winner and a leader throughout his junior football. If ever there was a captain in waiting, and a player desperate to win at all costs, it is this guy. He is still young.

I think I want to keep him, and I want him to lead our resurgence under a new game plan.

Note that Cripps and Weitering have had their best seasons under a defensive, grinding game plan. We have engineered a game plan to suit too few.
