Again, not the point. We need to do right by Carlton while the going is good, not potter around regarding what's someone 'deserves'.
Is the best thing to do trading a 24 year old mid who's shown at his best (if we can get him fit again) he's a top line mid

A 28 year old 2x Coleman Medallist who's clearly battling either physically or mentally, or both, with some of the worst delivery inside 50 I've ever seen from a team across a season.

A 27 year old Coleman Medallist coming off his best season to date who's been battling some mental demons and injuries and allegedly had a massive biff with one of our assistant coaches

I like to always think of it through the lens of... What would Geelong do in our situation? My opinion is that they'd keep as many of them as they could and f*** off the rest of the senior core who aren't pulling their weight either and far closer to the end than any of of those three.

I think I've decided the game plan and coaching inflexibility is the problem.

Sam Walsh was All Australian in his 3rd season. He was our best player at 21.

Under this game plan, he has been injured a lot, and has had his game completely blunted.

This guy was a winner and a leader throughout his junior football. If ever there was a captain in waiting, and a player desperate to win at all costs, it is this guy. He is still young.

I think I want to keep him, and I want him to lead our resurgence under a new game plan.

Note that Cripps and Weitering have had their best seasons under a defensive, grinding game plan. We have engineered a game plan to suit too few.
It's ironic that after 4 years under Voss you could almost convince me that we'd have had more success keeping Teague and just adding to the list.

Give Teague a fit Charlie, Cerra, Hewett, Acres, Hollands etc and we'd probably look like Brisbane out there... Moved the ball so much more smoothly with him, just had no players with even a slight interest in defending.

Players who needed space like Walsh and McKay could actually thrive with the wider ball movement we operated with.

We have turned too many small defenders into lockdown defenders. We have turned too many midfielders into inside/contested players. And we have complete eradicated any sort of natural instinct/flare in our young small forwards to make them better as defensive forwards.

The VFL ruckman Flynn Riley? looked eye opening good and special. List please
There's a reason he's been playing country footy in the middle of god knows where before the MSD came around.

And I don't believe it's because he was no good...

Think About It GIF by Identity

Really don't see the point in recruiting Bergman.

He's good, but not that good. Considering the price to get him out its a no from me.

Plus I see Cowan playing that role. Just need to give him another 12-24 months of development.
Versatile player, explosive athlete. No reason wouldn't be happy with both if the price was right.

Boyd not playing if fit and available is insane. But not out of keeping with this club administration/coaching. Idk what Voss has against him.
Remember when people were saying “Voss has favourites” cause he played him in the pre season in 2022 instead of Paddy Dow? Shows how stupid this discourse is

Were you expecting something more out of a rookie pick?

Not at all, you take 100 game foot soldiers every day of the week with rookie picks. Jamison was a great rookie defence pick a while back.

My... annoyance, I suppose, is with posts that list players to build the next flag assault around in 5-10 years including a vast array of these sorts of players.

Idk, I look at our list/youth presently and just don't see it, maybe that's because the picks we've had have been predominantly late round picks and not premium talent.

Where to from here?

Blowing it up from top to bottom (head of football to ageing players) seems to be the play.

Trading Walsh wouldn't be the best move to make this year anyway...

Draft is weak and asking for a FF when you don't know where that pick ends up is asking for trouble.

Like I've been saying, need to accept the fact that this playing group is regressing big time.

Losing TDK is only going to compound things further... our midfield is already struggling very badly... imagine having a lumbering Pittonet as the main ruck instead... (took his customary 1 mark v North LOL)

The compo pick for losing TDK is not going to bring in a player with >= value to TDK. So we will be WORSE off next year like it or not.

This is why I want us to trade Harry. We should be able to get a 2025 1st + 2026 1st. This does 2 things for us:

1 - It gives us an early enough pick to get Lindsay (a type we desperately need)
2 - It gives us invaluable currency for next year's draft

Walsh leaving as a FA next year gets us another compo pick...

Losing TDK + Harry will put us right in the frame to finish last next year.

1 + 2 + match bid for Cody.

We can also trade the 2026 1st we got for Harry for a very good player as 1st round picks next year will be invaluable and we won't need it to match the bid anyway.

So we're bringing in three very highly rated kids + a strong player via the 2026 1st we get for Harry this year.

"starting with the oldest nd work your way down, add the conditional players or the players in a position we have an oversupply" ... mate that's going to get us ** all trade capital mate... absolute ** all... so you really don't like the idea of making tough calls at all...

Please don't spout that Richmond 2016 BS again too...

The plan requires Voss in charge again next season.
Don’t think that’s possible now …

I love a good conspiracy theory but apart from round one when he did play, and yesterday, we've had two AFL listed ruckmen in the VFL team every week so there wasn't an opportunity for him. We haven't used any other non-Carlton listed ruckmen all season.

That one weakness (kicking)… Is quite important in the modern game and is what’s holding us back now. Mids with poor disposal that can’t connect with our forward line.

Unless they can improve their kicking, I don’t see them as an adequate replacement for Cripps and Hewett. They’d be depth.

IMO… Cerra, Walsh, Jagga & Lord are much better options.

Yep.

Big bodied, slow and awful by foot. And all had the same issues when drafted.

Our footy club is at a real fork in the road moment

Sack the coach blow up the list ?
Sack the coach keep the list ?
Keep the coach blow up the list ?
Keep the coach keep the list ?

The problem we have is no one knows which way to go…..does Wright ?
It’s a balance of all imo
We don’t need to blow everything up.
Just need to make the right changes in specific areas.
From the coaches through to the players. Get rid of the weeds and replace with better personnel/players if possible imo

Easier said than done.
It's not as if that's what they've been trying to do the whole time already.
Yeah we have been to a certain degree imo
And you’re right, it’s a hard task to change on the run.
But the whole ‘change/pivot’ needs to escalate this off season pretty substantially.
I believe if we can turn it around over this off season if we can make correct calls.

Yep.

Big bodied, slow and awful by foot. And all had the same issues when drafted.
And then we go and draft Ben Camporeale with the same issues…..

He handballs more than he kicks for a reason!!

Watching yesterday game we have too many who’s handball to kick ratio is a real worry.
Hewett 7-24 for 31 touches
Cripps 9-15 for 24 touches
Cincotta 0-7 for 7 touches
&
Ben Camporeale 8-17 for 25 touches in VFL

Yeah i never got excited by the twins to be honest. Both are Blake Acres clones.

Free agent don't match - DeKoning, Band 1 compensation (Top 10 pick, to trade for players)

Out of contract, do not re-sign - Motlop (trade for pick in the 30s?)

Delist/Retire - Docherty, Evans, Carroll, Fantasia, plus a couple of the kids that aren't going to make it.

Never fit, trade for late picks - Cottrell, E Hollands (late picks for F/S matching?)

Contracted, but free to good home - Binns, Pittonet, Durdin, Moir, Boyd, Fogarty, Acres.

Marquee trade bait - Curnow or McKay, Walsh (Multiple 1st round picks, to trade for players)
All fair imo - a fair and reasonable course of action to get us going again

The list has become a bit of a how's your farther look about it....

Needs tidying up... as you have suggested

He also bizarrely put a multi year contract on his head for the MSD despite nobody picking him up. I do remember C4 hinting that we'd hidden him after seeing him look fantastic in pre season.
