Something very wrong with Charlie at the moment.

He has kicked 14.7 in first quarters this year. If he sustained that for the game it is good enough to win the Coleman by a mile and close to 100 goals for the year, with good accuracy.

He is kicked 13.10 after quarter time in 13 matches this year. That is the equivalent of a 30 goal season = bog average.

In his last 4 games Curnow has 5.4 in the first quarter, and has not kicked a goal after quarter time. That's in matches against 8th, 13th, 16th and 18th on the ladder.

FOr what it is worth, Carlton players other than Curnow have 14 first quarter goals in those games, and 26 afterwards. Still a slightly higher first quarter rate but not that big a discrepancy. We piled on 5.4 to no score in the last quarter against North and Curnow did not score, did not take a mark, and had only 3 touches.

EIther he is carrying an injury or there is something else bizarre going on. The bike has to be related to that imo.
He’s representative of our on field issues.

Firstly, a lot of his current poor performance is self-inflicted - he wants to wrestle rather than lead, he doesn’t chase, he doesn’t tackle, he looks disinterested. Add to this he’s a “leader” of the club.

Secondly, he’s partially the victim of a coaching group who cannot generate quick entries and an open forward 50. No way he’s this bad playing for Collingwood, Brisbane or Geelong.

Thirdly, he’s banged up and injured, like a number of our players. Three surgeries over the off season. Who knows what it going on with his calf.

Except, 13 will slip to mid 20's...

pick in the 20's will probably be in the 40's...

Bergman is not going to improve us much, certainly won't make up for the loss of TDK...

Plus, Bergman will likely be a 7 year contract... no way would I be willing to take that on...
Current draft rankings has two academy or tied players in the top 10, WC will either get pick 2 or 19 for Allen and our compo pick would get 13 pushed out by roughly 4 spots.

Where are you getting mid 20s from?

I also didn’t say Bergman would make up for or be better than TDK, I said the combination of Bergman and Florent or a similar deal would be better output than TDK

Criticising Charlie Curnow for poor infield performance, leadership, decision making is fair game, wanting him out of the leadership group or dropped to put a rocket up his backside, all good.

But geez, a range of people calling him an idiot, calling him a clown or to be dropped because he rode a bike, FMD, grow up.

I think a couple of changes can fix a team. Look at Sydney with Gulden & Papley back. I even think it's possible at Carlton, as long as a couple of big challenges can be overcome.

But I am starting to think that there's no mix of players you can put around him that can allow Cripps to continue to play midfield in the modern game. He was a double-edged sword even at first, and the game has become infinitely quicker since then. IMO he needs to become a forward who attends some centre bounces or we'll be stuck playing a style of footy from decades ago until he retires.

Club went over the top when everyone was worried about him not being able to play to 30 because he was doing a truck load of work. We brought in Setterfield, Kennedy, Hewett so on and so forth. It was overkill and has hampered our club so much so we have let Kennedy and Settetfield leave for little return.

Cripps was never going to change the way he played and the club has allowed it to continue so much so that he now looks a shell of what he was last year. As Soapy V mentioned, he is injured, but we as a club imo have been solely focused on getting a premiership in his window and trying to recruit players to share his load, we have greatly missed picking up valuable pieces (players) to complete the puzzle.

Love Cripps, but yesterday and for a chunk this year, he looks disinterested and definitely not the type we have seen in the past to put an opposition player on their ass when required.

Hoping he can get back to his best, but agree, think playing forward more needs to happen

I will say that Charlie riding a bike to the MCG yesterday was emblematic of the 'just having a laugh' 'its only a job' vibe a lot of our fans think our player have.
They say you never forget how to ride a bike. That’s good for Charlie as you can’t count on him for a second effort.

There was talk not too long ago that even pick 5 could stretch to something like pick 10...

Either way, I'd still prefer to take the pick to the draft than to bring in Bergman, my opinion, but I just don't see the fuss about him, especially 7 years wow that's something...

I also didn’t say Bergman would make up for or be better than TDK, I said the combination of Bergman and Florent or a similar deal would be better output than TDK

Fair enough, but I think my main point about losing TDK isn't just about his direct output... rather, we will end up with Pitto as main ruck which will amplify the already big problems we have with our midfield...

I have a strong feeling it was a Voss call. Loves his small forwards even if they are not AFL standard. Credit to him I guess for wanting a list for the "modern game" but no point clogging it with spuds who are not up to it.
Maybe the proof was in his pre-season and not proving himself on the park when he had the opportunity to do so…just maybe..

Perhaps we had an inkling with something being up/off with EH and needed to look at replacements for that role, and maybe somebody more than took their opportunity as a VFL train-on (ended up being 2).

And then we go and draft Ben Camporeale with the same issues…..

He handballs more than he kicks for a reason!!

Watching yesterday game we have too many who’s handball to kick ratio is a real worry.
Hewett 7-24 for 31 touches
Cripps 9-15 for 24 touches
Cincotta 0-7 for 7 touches
&
Ben Camporeale 8-17 for 25 touches in VFL
Handballing is the “modern game”.
It’s the kicking (and running) by our players that is concerning..

Yeah agree but some of these players ratio is too lopsided and can’t see this combination of midfielders being successful in the modern game when most can’t run or kick and there strength is handball from congestion.

Cripps, Hewett, Cerra & Camporeale over the next 2 years is too much of the same skill sets.

Cez should be more in front on the kicking ratio but happy he can do both. George is ok too but slow with ball to boot.
Need the accompanying players to dish it off to that can hit a target (but also in space, or can make their own with a burst out f the stoppage area).
Wings & defenders need to offer more on the run, carry & deliver. While the forwards need to offer more as being forwards + slotting goals..
Field & goal kicking practice for all!! All summer + sprint training for some extra yards.

Looks like Rowell will re-sign a 2 year extension with the Suns to take him through to free agency.

I fully expect we will be well in the hunt in 2 years time to bring him to his beloved Blues at that time. Definitely know for a fact he has said he would love to play for us before finishing his career. Kind feel like the stars may align at the end of 2027. Well at least I hope so!

Good hewett replacement

Won't know until maybe somebody writes their memoirs one day. Would seriously love to know whether this one in particular was LM or coaches or both.

Walsh is similar as well. We need genuine leg speed and better ball use

Next year we can’t play Cripps Hewett Cerra Walsh Ben Campo Lord in same midfield and I rate them all individually

If Walsh stays he has to play Wing. It’s just his spot and he can dominate there

Jagga will help
Hopeful for Elijah but who knows?
Wilson and Moir are showing positive signs

I’d love Kemp to play middle to replace Cripps. It’s his best spot

We need to add more run and better ball use. Bergman looks good and is playing midfield now
Braden Campbell is an elite user we need and has leg speed

If TDK goes we MUST make something good from the pick like I’ve mentioned above as a minimum. IMO we also need to trade another top player to help quickly regenerate our list

Leg speed around ground, better ball use and a genuine X factor small forward must be our targets

Personally, if it came down to choosing between the two, I’d be more inclined to shop Charlie over McKay. While he's obviously a gifted goal-scorer, his lack of effort outside of hitting the scoreboard is pretty concerning — especially considering he’s our vice-captain and a supposed leader in the forward line. The pressure just isn’t there, and that’s hard to ignore.

As for Walsh, it’s a tough one. I absolutely wouldn’t want to see him traded, but I do wonder if his body is starting to let him down. If that’s the case, there might be a conversation to be had about whether we capitalise on his value while it’s still relatively high.
What do you think Walsh’s trade value is currently?

Harry McKay > Ollie Florent + Syd 2025 1st
This might even still be unders now that I think about it. I think Harry's value is two first round picks (one being top 10). Florent isn't worth a first especially if they aren't giving him a game. And Swans pick in a compromised draft probably isn't as valuable especially if they keep winning. Campbell would be perfect but can't see them doing it.

Spot on soap!
We need to make some tough calls to the midfield group.
We’ve been found out having way to many the same type and this is a major issue imo

The bit that gets me is, every player taken in the MSD, was available us when we chose Evan’s and White. Seems really lazy recruiting to assume the best two options in the country just so happen to be already training with us

I’d say he’s probably worth two first-rounders, with the potential for some swapping of later picks — maybe we get a second-rounder back in exchange for a third.

He’s still young and expected to enter his prime in the next few years. He’s a former No.1 draft pick, an All-Australian, and has delivered in finals. There’s a strong foundation of proven talent there.

The only real concern is his recent run of injuries. But I also think that’s partly due to the role he’s being asked to play. Whether that’s his own preference or a directive from the coaches, I’m not sure, but he’s not a natural inside mid. He’s more the polish you add to a midfield group, not the one constantly doing the grunt work. While he can play that crash-and-bash style, it feels like it limits his strengths and may be contributing to his durability issues.
