2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

If we trade Pick 7 for Flanders without anything else coming back our way I'd be very surprised. If we are looking to get an additional Future 1st for next year I'd look at Collingwood's, I think they could be a big slider next year.
Surely a future first gets it done for Flanders... what do Gold Coast need more first round picks for this year, they're already getting three of them

Needs more strings to his bow if he is going to make it.

Doesn’t play like a traditional key forward either.

If I was him. I’d be living in the gym and working on my ruck craft. Because he should in theory, cause chaos as a ruck
He’ll have to make sure he runs to and from the gym then. Because vs GWS he looked as slow as a wet week, despite doing a few nice things.

I think his best bet is to mimic Mason Wood. He struggled to impact as a KPF at North and saved his career playing on a wing. Keeler is a unique talent that needs nurturing to get absolute maximum value/ Similar to Schoienmaker. If you could get creative with them you could have something special.

Keeler needs to find some way to get maximum value from his unique traits. Most of his goals have been playing like a small forward. Perhaps as a rebounding and marking tall defender like Battle could work.

He's very nimble and quite fast. Agilty will go if he gets too big. Otherwise he could be a bit of a Buddy style forward with less marking but more brilliance to score goals and still back up ruck.

We are not getting Merrett.

If Merrett leaves it’s to a team that’s contending and guaranteed to be in the window.

Merrett is a quality A grade star but to think he would leave the bombers to join us is just silly if we take our red white and black glasses off.

Which is probably a good thing as he would cost to much.

I’d say he 95% stays at the bombers if not maybe the hawks.
I think we are contending. It's go time.

Backline has 2 elite players in Sincs and Wilkie. Bring in JSOS, a fit Howard and Flanders/NAS rotating on the other back flank and that is an outstanding set up.

Forward line has potentially 3 elite players in Higgins, Hall and King, with Owens and Sharman both very good. Ryan super dangerous also if he comes in.

If we get Merrett, we would have NAS, Merrett, TDK with any of Pou, Steele, Macrae, Hall, Wilson, Garcia for rotations. Marshall an elite resting ruck/forward.

If we got Merrett we are ready to challenge now, provided we get some luck with injury and some improvements from the coaching box.

This offseaon could have us in a position to do an Adelaide.

Was just having this convo with a mate.

  • TDK
  • Dodson
  • Keeler

Would all still be on the list. Keeler rucked in our last game.

It’s an interesting situation. They want to keep Marshall. That can’t be ignored. But if he did go, maybe we look at drafting a forward ruck?

There are a few very good second and third tier rucks out there. I like Knobel and Madden. Both are third in line and both raw still.

It definitely looks like the plan. King staying fit is nearly the biggest part of the equation. a 50 goal season from King probably pushes us back up a fair way on his own. Get the extras in to support defence and small forward spots and we are a serious side.

Doubt we get Merrett but Flanders to replace Jones and development from Garcia, Phillipou, Wilson etc and we are already a bit better through the middle. Especially if we can get a ruck advantage through TDK.

I still think of Keeler as a key forward who can chop out in the ruck. If the club sees him as a ruck who can play forward (or back) that changes things I guess.
Maybe I am trying to jump to conclusions, but I can see a world where the club wants Keeler to play more ruck next year. There seemingly was a push to fast-track his upper body strength and exposed him more consistently in the GWS game.

Obviously plenty of water to go under the bridge in the ruck stocks, but Keeler as the 'second ruck' makes the depth seem thin. But I don't think Marshall and Heath will leave in the same window without contingencies in place.

As I’ve said for sometime. Sam Walsh was the only mid I’d heard of that was gettable “at the level above” and it looks like he is staying.

Don’t buy Merrett for a second. All the others have re-signed.

Unless it is someone like a Serong type that is wanting to stay focussed on finals. Knowing the Saints it will Be Adam Treloar.

Not the biggest fan of AI slop, but heres a compiled injury timeline for Jack Silvagni from 2019 onwards with chatgpt, most of the sources used are from carlton and afl official site so it seems mostly correct:

Jack Silvagni Injury Timeline (2019–2025)

  • 27 Jun 2020 — Bruised lung and fractured rib (v Essendon, R5). Hospital overnight. Missed the next two games (R6–R7).
  • Aug 2020 — Knee (ITB release surgery). Required 4–6 weeks recovery, effectively ending his season.
2021
  • 18 Mar 2021 — Dislocated shoulder (v Richmond, R1). Missed Round 2, returned Round 3.
  • 10 Apr 2021 — Right shoulder ligament issue (v Gold Coast, R4). Minor procedure, out for about a month. Returned Round 8.
  • 9 May 2021 — Concussion (R8). Missed Round 9 under 12-day protocols.
2022
  • No medium or long-term injuries reported.
2023
  • 22 Jul 2023 — Knee joint sprain (v West Coast, R19). Re-injured in the VFL the following month. Didn’t play AFL again that year, missing the rest of the season from Round 20 onward.
2024
  • 24–25 Jan 2024 — Ruptured ACL at training. Season-ending injury, 12-month recovery. Missed the entire 2024 season.
2025
  • 27 Apr 2025 — Fractured hand (v Geelong, R7). Had surgery, missed 1–2 games, returned around Round 10.
  • 16 May 2025 — Groin soreness (v Sydney, R10). Missed roughly one game (Round 11).
  • Jul–Aug 2025 — Ongoing groin issues. Given recovery blocks, then officially shut down for the final three games of the season.
**** he’s copped a bit.
I recall one game against Carlton for some reason our main ruck was one of our backup specials we’ve had over the years and Carlton decided to play jsos in the ruck against our boy.
He absolutely towelled our specialist backup ruck. It was actually a bit embarrassing.

I love when Eddie gets a little Eddie over us. Means we are worth taking noticed of and that only means good things.

We are becoming relevant again.
Just when clubs like Blues, Bombers and Port appear to be falling apart.

All of a sudden we are being held up as the gold standard in list management. ( After the supposed player exodus - jeez the media are a fickle bunch)

Who’d a thunk it, when all the player agents were saying we are amongst the most difficult club to deal with?🙄

Latest on Silvagni... hot off the press today from my source.... He may now be in some doubt... had medical and passed ok.... but apparently showed some odd characteristics and a bit of a smart arse towards a few....

Separate unrelated topic.... i'm hearing Mr Jayco may have very quietly paid out the Club's entire debt...

No updates on Windy or Marshall at this stage.
That’s just the Carlton in him. We can flush that out of him.

mini pou gives off massive young Max Holmes vibes imo

Looks nowhere near as quick to me. Holmes had outside pace but unsure on how it translated in AFL. Grlj is probably closer to Holmes for pace. I think Holmes had an athletic background is that what you mean?

Gerry, come on down!

Ironically I think Zach Merrett is probably J'Varn's ceiling.

My read on him is more a Jordan De Goey type of impact forward and midfield type. He looks quite a solidly built type but quite agile and good in the air and on the ground. This draft is pretty average over all and I don't think he's anywhere near the quality of the first couple of rounds of last year but he's got that confidence like his brother that should get the absolute most out of himself.

Great summary.

How in the hell could Drapers next contract be close to band 1 compensation?

There isn’t a world where Brisbane could bring in 2 players on that much cash. And the guy isn’t a top 12 ruck in the comp. I smell the afl trying to cook up some dodgy band 1 compo to get ‘big club’ Essendon back to relevancy.
And the biggest thing for Draper - that Achilles. Glad we are nowhere near that

This year's first rounder no use to them if they're matching NGA picks
