2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

Not at all surprising and the nature of how these things work nowadays.

Still, it seems Hawks have suggested they’ll listen, and we’re probably pretty keen, so just a watch this space maybe. IMO it doesn’t happen this trade period
All I’m doing is trying to pass off info, wether people believe or not, that’s fine

Hey Saints Fans

Not coming in to be inflammatory, but the McKenzie news is his management leaking for an increase on his extension being worked through

Whilst I’m sure you guys are keen, unless the offer from you guys is significant from a trade perspective, it won’t be happening from Hawthorn’s or Cam’s perspective

Happy to discuss in a friendly manner

*Il throw in an edit , things obviously change, so if it ends up being wrong, I will come back and apologise
Very civil. I for one thank you for the information, and I hope everyone else is as polite as that post

Just caught up and wow! Plenty of work that has obviously been done behind the scenes. Most relevant points have already been said, but for me, this is where having a super experienced recruiter comes into play.

Is CMac a better prospect than Lindsay, Grij or whatever mid is available with our first next year?
How good is Fincher?
Is next years second rung (ie mid to late first round) shaping up as any good?

Basically this recruiting spree can also be seen as betting on drafts. We invested heavily last year. Sure there are good players every year, but if the Rymple thinks there will be busts all through this years first round, then why not invest in more known quantities like CMac and / or or Flanders? That also fast-tracks our timeline in line with both the NAS contract, and Wilkie / Sincs.

How do we get it done? Personally, I hope / think we keep Roma (unless they offer us SDK).

So for me Steele is very very quickly becoming the odd man out. None of his age, position or salary work with the potential incomings. Maybe its time for Ross to get on the phone to Mini.

WCE: in Steele. Out Ryan, 12
Haw: in 12. Out CMac
St.K: in Ryan, Cmac. Out Steele

Hawthorn get their first rounder back. Not only do we get both of CMac and Ryan done, but Steele's wage off the books also covers the JSOS / Aleer option. McCrae covers his role onfield (both cant play in the same midfield) and the captaincy goes to Wilkie. Then with TDK already locked in, that covers nearly all of our work. Last decision is whether to keep our original first? Or flick it onwards for Flanders?

Basically all comes back to Rymple's evaluation of this draft, and whether the CMac / Flanders typesare better bets than players like Lindsay, Grij, Mini pou etc. Evidence so far would say we are betting against this years draft

First of all, you did thumbs down a post, so not sure you are avoiding being inflammatory.

If you are being serious for a decent discussion, what is McKenzie's value in your opinion?

And as I'm assuming you have it higher than we think, why is it higher when he is not best 22?

When's Hawthorn's midfield was struggling and was missing Will Day, McKenzie wasn't picked.

There might be another reason as to why, which you can enlighten us.

But Hawthorn is sending mixed messages if they want large capital for a player that they either deem as underperforming or don't rate.

Fair enough

Well see if the hawks and the media shut this down tomorrow which I’d expect since you think there is an extension on the way
As I said, things change and I’m sure you have chatted to him, it’s good business by his management and St Kilda to enquire

I just know Hawthorn won’t be taking a second rounder or anything like that if a trade request came in

Don't think it gets done to be honest, it would be a baffling move. The cost to get him out while he's contracted would far exceed his value, even if he has been a fringe player this year. If he actually wanted a move, it would make far more sense to be having that conversation next year.

Tom Morris is that you..?????

Appreciated and I don’t discount it at all.

Devils advocate though - in and out of the team, Hawks publicly targeting a gun mid… who would CMac be plotting to replace in there in the near future? What’s his game time looking like? That would likely look better with us so could that turn his head?

Obviously his second half was poor, but breaking his hand caused him some issues post surgery, played the first half of the season

Extension was Allready in the works and has continued to be
His third season is tracking as well as his first. In out of the side and hasn’t seen your senior side in a month - but you think his manager is using the side who just wrote contracts for TDK and NWM as the best ploy to get a new contract 12 months out?

Wasn’t meant to be

Cam is worth anywhere between 7-15, due more to the fact he is contracted, if he wasn’t, probably closer to 12-20

As much as you say the midfield was struggling, we’ve won 15 games, and we preferred to run fwds through there instead in the current iteration.

As I said previously, he struggled with his hand recovery, but I think that he is selected for the first final.

Has had a similar path to Ward, who this year became a best 22 lock, with Worpel out the door, Cam will be best 22 next year, no matter who comes in

Great news if true
More interested in Flanders every day of the week

Stocker.

But granted we definitely aren't flush for players in that area - especially with Webster retirement and McLennan delisting.

I would assume this might be a target for us in the back end of the draft.

Not sure if Hastie is a lock-down type or if he is a rebounding defender/winger. Will be interesting to see how he develops.
LOC is a lockdown type.

Worpel out
Maybe another mid in, but don’t want to have to run Moore through as much next year

McKenzie has only played 12 games this year, is not in their best 22 and averages 16.5 touches. In what world is he worth what most think is Marshall's value (Geelongs 1st).
He’s contracted a was pick 7 a few years ago, they have no reason to trade him unless the offer is compelling.

Of course as Saints fans we want to get him as cheap as possible, but imagine if a team came for Pou. He’s been injured and barely played this season, only really had a handful of good games last season, surely not worth more than a 2nd right?

When it’s not your player it’s easier to write them off. He’s definitely worth a first round pick, if we could split 7 into two picks in the teens and grab him and Flanders it would be a success.

It was , until he broke his hand

As I said I think St Kilda poses more of a threat to gaining cam due to the academy link

Keep him

I think its a trade for a sake of a trade for us also.

Mccrae Nas Pou Garcia Box Wilson
Sincs can rotate
plus Dow Fincher
and Flanders if its true

Its a luxury trade I would rather goto the draft
We would only trade Cam if something astronomical was occurring and we need the capital, Butters for example
