2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

I’m a bit wary of Cmac, others like Bulter are getting games in front of him.

I think he’s going to be a player I’m just not sure how good, is he a B grader or better as a mid ?. Flanders is miles ahead on exposed form and imo he’s more versatile.

There’s so much going on nothing will surprise me this offseason. It would be nice to have Flanders nominate us because Cmac if it happens won’t be easy.

Flanders a bit longer at it, but even a couple of years ago he demonstrated that he can win a lot of contested ball on occasion. I don't think McKenzie has that aspect to his game. Its hard to tell with McKenzie though, its like when the Hawks traded Josh Kennedy because they thought he was average at best.

Geelong are going ok and they only won clearances in 8 of their 24 games so far this year

You have to get your hands on the ball one way or another. Not being able to win clearances doesn't make them better. They are doing ok "despite " not winning the clearances.

When will Wilkie announce his request to be traded to the Bulldogs?

Maybe next May, maybe the May after.

Nice to see another as well.
Which part of the Hills do you call home.
Anthony Harvey (Rob's younger brother) has dinner at the Bedford once a month.
What’s his hair like?

Out of curiosity, what culture are you referring to? Without sounding rude, their tenure over last decade, take those 2 years out from Steele, have been average to good. It’s definitely not a winning culture they’ll be killing.

This is overrated to be honest. The club is now being driven by Nas & Co. they’ve created their own culture. The culture that Steele and Marshall drove had us in no man’s land. Mason Wood and Brad Hill are more integral to our culture

Rubbish. What culture? One of a final every five years?
They are both contracted. Can stay if they wish, can go if they wish. But not for peanuts.
Nobody is pushing them out.
You all genuinely believe losing both of them couldn’t have a negative impact on the group?

Both have been leaders, one captain, of the group for years. You can question their success and quality as leaders, but there’s no questioning that they are and have been influential and core members of the team.

I agree that both Hill and Wood are better for our ‘culture’ and that Nas, Windy and co are now driving the standard, that still doesn’t mean we can flick two well liked members from our senior core without potentially causing some unrest.

Sure, if they both want out, bye and thanks for your service but if we’re pushing them out the door purely to get some currency to facilitate big money recruits then yeah to me it’s an obvious risk.

Personally I’d like to see us try the Roma/TDK combo and a new role to resurrect Steele, aggressive list management is fine but have to be way we don’t cut too deep, too quickly.

Geelong are an elite intercept side. (Stack up consistently across the board)

Infact the top 6 intercept sides - 4 of them are playing this week. Adelaide was minor premier. Carlton the outlier. Their ball in hand game is deplorable.

Infact all top 8 sides sit in the top 10. Carlton Melbourne the exceptions. But poor ball in hand.

Stkilda.

Second bottom. We are poor at winning the ball back - which points to the recruitment of Aleer JSOS TDK and Ryan’s ability to prevent intercept with his forward half marking ability.

Last year, we sat 9th for this stat.

Funny thing is that our ball in hand game actually holds up - with scope for improvement.

Threat Rating: a measure of how often a player’s kicks result in a shot at goal later in the chain compared to expectation. ranked 9th across the season and 5th in our last 10 games.

Retention Rating: a measure of how often a player’s kicks are retained by a teammate compared to expectation.
ranked 3rd across the season and 3rd in our last 10 games

We are bottom for intercept marks and third bottom for contested marks.

Geelong are 2nd for both.

Stats can be found here for everyone to play with.

Done. We’re receiving Nick Coffield and a future third.
Remember when he and Clark were recruited. We all complained about two HBF'ers and we were assured that they both would transition into the mids.
Coffield never got out of the HBF and the best games Clark played in the past few years was when he went back to HBF in the last few games.
Lets hope the current crop of Wilson, Travaglia wont be stuck on a HBF

Steele has given us great service, but in fairness, being in our top 3 mids, is a fair way behind the top team's midfields. That is where we need to improve to play finals. Jack would be best played as a forward at this stage.

Don't disagree but wait until we have someone who is an improvement and/or greater depth. To me he is worth keeping on the list for another year.

Why on earth would you watch a North game, let alone several?

I'd rather watch pimple popping videos

I watch random games when they are on, often not even whole matches. It usually corresponds to when I'm home not the actual match up.

Anyways I always thought that he was a GOP level type but he actually can play. He occasionally does some freak stuff that makes you think he's got enough talent to be a good player in a better side. A lot of that older talent there is good and plenty of young guys look likely. They have been down so long it's hard to kick start back into life.

So their best player is on under 700k after year? Are they having a laugh?

I think that they are offering him another $700k on top of his current wage to get him to stay.

Sam butler is a half forward flanker/small forward in the Luke Breust mould, Mackenzie is a pure mid. Different position mate!

We're not flicking them though. Both are required players, and they will be leaving because they want to, not because we want them to.

I've been around football clubs long enough to know that any negative impact due to their absense will be shortlived.

I think we can take 2 in the draft, as one will be Caminiti upgrade? I might be wrong about that. Maybe:

Marshall (traded)
Steele (traded)
Heath (traded)???
Boyd
Webster
Mclennan
Carrol
Jones
Shoenmaker????

Gonna be unfortunate for one or two players for sure
cordy and surely byrnes is in the mix,he and jones types are taking us nowhere, rather give carrol a good go at it or persist with schoey,at least get something from tassie for him

I hope we don’t get Flanders to be honest. He’s not a damaging player, and we already have plenty of not damaging players. CMAC would be better but concerning he can’t break into a not too deep Hawthorn midfield after 3 seasons.

Finn Callaghan is the exact player our team needs, grew up bayside, perfect age and decided to stay with GWS. How could he do that? Why would he do that?

Finn didn't want to come for more money than most world leaders are on. Flanders is better than most of our players currently playing midfield and adaptable. He won't cost three top 10 picks and $2 million a year to get hold of. You don't turn down Luke Ball because he's not Chris Judd.

Not sure what the damaging thing is. Nas is damaging but you can't play three or four high risk high reward players in the one side or you become unstructured. He's neat, attacking and hard working.

Even if he levels out as a B grade player we are pushing out a Ryan Byrnes, Hunter Clark or another C grader.

You are a better side than you were before. I see him a bit like Peatling for Adelaide. It makes your list depth much stronger and if he doesn't lift he gets pushed aside by one of our developing kids.
