2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th

We're not flicking them though. Both are required players, and they will be leaving because they want to, not because we want them to.

I've been around football clubs long enough to know that any negative impact due to their absense will be shortlived.
Agreed. I think AFL fans think of these relationships with a romanticized view of "how much this bloke means" because its a nice way to think about sport, but these are professionals doing a job, more now than it ever has

If we win, its gonna be interpreted as smart business that "allowed the youth to usher in a new age" and if we lose its "loss of key leadership left St Kilda without role models"

Either way, its all retroactively applied, regardless of what the actual effect was
I think we can get the most return for them now, and should proceed to do so.

I think whether Steele and Marshall stay or go it's time to tell NAS, Pou, Windy and Owens that this is their club now and they have to step out of the leadership shadow of Steele and drive the club forward.

Thought Windy was back, can't be bothered looking for it but didn't someone post a pic the other day of him and Chito running laps at Moorabbin?

Spot on. Just like the Bulldogs did with Bontempelli and Co. We know how that turned out 🏆

I’m still confident on Ned Flanders choosing to join us at the Saints. Yes the appointment of Steven King at the Dees would be an attractive proposition, but Ned wants midfield time. Not sure anyone would want to go to the Dees with their current mids. Trac leaves……then that may create a spot. Still think the overall package would have us as a far more attractive prospect going forward. We would definitely be making a better financial offer 💰

We're also less of a basket case at the moment.

GETTABLE

- Merrett only wants the Hawks. No interest in other clubs in the midfield market like Stkilda

- Wilkie, stays at stkilda. But has not informed the bulldogs he will/wont pursue their offer. Saints won’t open the door to a trade (cal)

- Carlton is trading the TDK Compo. Clubs have been told it’s up for grabs. Suns might retain pick 6 because of points at this point.

- Flanders, will meet with Stkilda Carlton Melbourne Essendon all meeting with him next week. Already spoken to Steven king. Will cost a first round pick. HE IS MOVING TO VICTORIA NEXT YEAR (Cal)

- potential draft changes for next year could look like requiring 2 TOP 12 picks to match a top 5 bid. AFL might bring in sign on bonuses for players to join struggling clubs via Free agents.

- Liam Ryan, Going to Stkilda (literally that’s it 😂)

- Marcus Windhager, overseas both North and Melbourne pushing hard. See some movement in the next week.

- Max Heath, Going to Melbourne. “ LOCK IT IN” (Twomey)

- Rowan Marshall,Wants to go to Geelong. Depends on what Geelong is willing to pay and then our appetite to deal on top of that.

Thanks for these updates Stav.

The two quoted points seem related to me. Have bolded why.

I get why.

The context is that Carlton want picks infront of the bid or next year. They can’t just trade out as they need points for Dean and their other Academy pick.

I’d be more concerned if Curnow was going to GC and Flanders being apart of that deal.

I really hate that this Wilkie story still has legs. Wilkie is absolutely integral to us moving forward, will be captain next year. The fact he is still unhappy enough with the club to be considering the Dogs is really bad for us even if we flat out refuse to trade him. Need absolutely everyone to buy in from day dot next year, let alone the captain.
