2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

If that’s the case then we should be able to back them (and a Flanders and say SOSOS) in to improve enough next year for us to become a more appealing proposition to guys who are better than Aleer/Ryan types, so that we can spend our money on them instead.

With all due respect, I think for myself and call things as I see them.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from life it’s that even bonafide “experts” in a field will disagree on how to go about things, so there’s no such thing as “so-and-so says x is the way to go about things, so therefore that’s an indisputable fact”.

I’ve said what I see the benefit being. Instead of putting big road-blocks in front of a bunch of our most talented kids- especially the ones who are coming into their 3rd or 4th years- we keep backing them in and getting game time into them which

A: Significantly increases the likelihood of them continuing to improve (eg Keeler was significantly better with each return to the seniors this year- that almost certainly doesn’t happen if he’d been in the VFL all year)
B: We have more of an idea of what we really need to throw our cash at, before committing lots of money to it.

And if the “kids regress” then we probably don’t have the foundations we’d need to build a premiership list on anyway, so getting a whole lot of Aleer/Ryan types on top of them isn’t going to get us anywhere near a flag. Like when we got a big influx 5-6 years ago. Who got us up to 6th, with a maxed cap.

If you’re suggesting that there won’t be other great opportunities to recruit someone when we offer them $600K PA more than their own club thinks they’re worth then I’d disagree with that. Especially if we’re a better team than we were this year.

And the next one might fit more of a need than ruck is for us. Our ruck stocks would already be the envy of lots of clubs.

All that would be required would be some creative accounting. Like paying Nas $3mil next year. And again, I’m NOT saying don’t spend any of it on blokes this year.

I’m all for Flanders (as he’s young and has A-grade potential) and as I keep saying would be ok with SOSOS, as we don’t have to trade for him, or commit to him for too long.

Anyway, none of what any of us here thinks matters, so we’ve just got to cross our fingers and hope this works.
Agree with most of this.

Let’s not go overboard by bringing in so many purely because we can and stunt the growth of Garcia, Boxy, Wilson etc.

Keen on Flanders definitely and either SOS or Aleer. Not both - I know SOS is much better right now, but injuries worry me for a long contract.

Can see the attraction of Ryan but give me Collard playing every game instead.

Don’t want to throw the slow and steady game plan right out the window while acknowledging we do need to keep improving - both for the club and to show Nas we mean business.
It’s a very fine balance.

Hey Frogs,

We’re all not sure about the war chest but we suspect it might be linked to all the paper bags SOS brought with him when he crossed over.

I know 4th hand that the trainee receptionist has been complaining as the paper bags have been destroying the office shredder the last week.

Ribbit.
"Hey Frogs" might be my favourite new greeting.

I feel like our forum has it's own version of the Consumer Watch Dog now.

I like the strategy of going really hard when the time is right, but for mine, we’re going a year too early.

You do understand that the Club has banked salary cap that and that a chunk of this if not spent next year will be lost.

The Plan was always to start going hard this trade period, and more so after missing out last trade period.

In addition this years draft pool is weak. This is not the year to take a large number of young kids. We used extra picks last season to pick up Dodson. We have drafted in a lot of kids in recent seasons.

As if we think we can win the flag next year.

While they would love to win it next season, the plan is more to:
1/Try and win it while players like Sincs and Wikie in particular are still very good over say the next 3 seasons. And Clark and possibly Marshall, Steele (though maybe these two are traded out for mid age players) and Macrae and then lesser again to Hill and wood.
2/ That our very young core will continue to improve for many years yet

Now IF we do land both JSOS and Ryan, both are then only say 3/4 y ear players. JSOS would be a free hit though as is FA.

The Nas Factor. The Club will want to have a very good 2027, so that Nas extends.

I doubt that we would getting both Flanders and Cmac. Probably just one. Both are young.

So in 4 years we should already have (ignoring any other future trades/draftees) say:

Stocker/Hastie Aleer Barrat
Flanders/Cmac Tauru Travalgia
Wilson Boxshall Windhager
Sharman Caminiti/Keeler Hall
Higgins King Collard

TDK Nas Phillipou

Dodson Owens Henry Keeler/Caminiti Garcia

That is a pretty solid 25 to be getting games into.

Sorry to intrude but there was a report of a Dodson being sighted at the crows headquarters today on our board. Hasn't he just signed an extension with you guys. I can only assume he was there to catch up with some of his old u18 mates welsh, draper?. Seemed an odd report

Contract Status: Out of contract at the end of 2026

I would imagine that once all the other deals are done that the Club would look to extend him.

By then the Club will know what $$$ are left and if Marshall and/or Heath have been traded out.

That premiership was six years ago.

He's almost 29 and hasn't had a good season since 2021. He kicked 100 goals in his first four seasons and 58 in the next four.
do you think there is much of a correlation?

No idea. One thing I will say is he's a required player and on his VFL form an extremely promising prospect for a young ruck/forward.

Is everyone else having a whole lot of trouble posting on here, and finding it a massive pain in the ass lately?

Like every few minutes the page refreshes (saying there was a problem reloading the page) while you’re in the middle of typing a post, and this box you’re typing in then comes up blank, and that ads keep coming up all over the screen (especially when typing, moving the box you’re typing in all over the place), and regularly when you’re typing, the screen freezes, and it takes like half a minute to type one word?

Are others experiencing this? It’s like being back in the bad old days of dialup. Can take like 3 or 4 times as long as normal to write a post, especially of any length.

It’s becoming intolerable.
It’s driving me nuts! Especially as there’s no alternative now with tapatalk gone.

West coast owe us. Jamie Cripps closing on 300 games. Trade was Cripps and 46 for 41 and 44.

Ryan for a bag of beans seems fair

1st year draftee, contracted. Saints will extend next year. You think we will give up a bloke we picked that you all passed on? You had your chance.

Didn't you hear there is an Exodus of players headed to the Saints? If he was there, it was likely to help us with some further acquisitions.

Mothers, lock up your daughters. Smithers is on the town!
