2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

One game winning a final was worth 4 years of being one of the highest paid players at the club who played 17% of the games possible?
Yes it is worth every cent. Even if the only game he played was that final lol.

Everyone wants to shit on Essendon for not winning a final for over 20 years. Winning finals is important.

I'm certain that we wouldn't have won that final without Hannebery. And if we didn't have Hannebery, we wouldn't have magically gotten someone else to fill that void.

He was the best we could ask for at the time.

Yes, it was worth it.

I'd rather be embarrassed that we paid Hanners way too much for too long to win us a game then be embarrassed because a twitter account counts how many days since we've won a final (7,649 for those wondering how long it's been for Essendon).
100 times over this.

should ask bulldogs about Tom Boyd
Totally different situation. Hannebery was cooked after 200 games being smashed as mid for the Swans and was 28 when he started playing for the Saints. Boyd was recruited in 2014, played nine games in his first year and 52 out of a possible 88 after that. If Hannebery had played 52 out of 88, instead of 17, then that would be a different conversation. Not apples and apples.

yeah feel like essendon fans are decent to us and don't make the same tired premiership jokes because the days since they last won a final retort is ready to go for them

they're decent
Not in my experience. Bombers fans might be less entitled now their club has been a rabble-ish minnow for so long, but they are definitely as - if not more - dismissive of us and our club, either outwardly scornful or sneering or condescending. Hate the club and the fans of both Carlton and Essendon, trying to say which one is better is like ranking dog turds.

110% right lmao

Winning a final is great. Not to mention it was against the scum

They're the ultimate "next year is our year" types. And they win every trade period, just ask them.

Carlton fans aren't as bad as Essendon, until they start looking like Carlton might make finals. It's like figuring out which testicle to punch, the left or the right

Sorry to intrude but there was a report of a Dodson being sighted at the crows headquarters today on our board. Hasn't he just signed an extension with you guys. I can only assume he was there to catch up with some of his old u18 mates welsh, draper?. Seemed an odd report

Also, who the f**k else were we going to pay? Billings, Dunstan, Newnes etc all made a great living.

People here have been screaming for a decade for us to go and recruit more mids. We get an AA one, and everybody complains "not that one." We had to spend the money, and he is the only one that said yes. Plus when on the park, he was great

Also, I have a lot of issues with the last admin (we all do). But they absolutely recruited great people and leaders. Ryder, Hill, Wood, Hanners. These blokes in the chargerooms are the reason why players like NAS, Sharman, Marshall etc. are what they are now.

Those recruits helped fill the hole that Lenny, Roo and Joey left, and that we could never fill internally. Every one of those 4 recruits is worth every cent we paid them, and happy with them getting contracts as long as they did. If people judge payment of those 4 based solely on their onfield performance, then you are really missing the point.

At the end of the day - who would you prefer?

Hannebery or Shiel?

Won us a final in 2020. Best on ground in that game, worth every cent.

The trade clearly didn't work out, but it had merit. We lacked an experienced leader. We got one, just a shame we could barely get him on the field.
Won us a final? What?

Dan Hanneburys 19 possession, 0 tackle, 0 goal final performance most definitely was not the difference between winning or losing a final.

The Hannebury trade was one of the most putrid decisions any club has made the last 2 decades. He was a raging boozer, with a cooked body and the club knew. Everybody knew it. It was the worst kept secret in the AFL.

It's okay, to just sometimes say, you no what, that was atrocious list management.

Did you watch that game, or just read about it in the Herald Sun on the Monday after?

The idea that Hannebury singlehandely won us our sole final win in 10+ years with a 19 possession goalless game of football, and that justified burning over 2m is honestly one of the more extraordinary takes I have seen on here.

Did u watch the game? To suggest Hanners was the difference is outrageous.

I remember Geary was huge, monstering Caleb Daniel in the qst qrt. Paddy Ryder was massive, Hunter Clark saved us late.

Can't remember 1 moment of significance from Hanners. I am sure he was okay, but his baseline was fricking low, just running out there was considered a massive victory at the time.

It blows my mind the lengths people will got to to defend the Hannebury trade. Ffs, he was known to have major drug addiction issues at the time. I know for a fact, the Cats where well aware as my father in law was on the board.

I had mates that used to party with him and Buddy. It was the worst kept secret in town he was a fiend for the nose beers.

The Saints knew and Lethers pushed it through. Good guy for a night out, atrocious list management to let him anywhere near your club. Hence why Swans were desperate to get off him.

Interestingly he doesn't drink anymore and admits he is an addict. Would have been nice to come to that realisation when you were not taking a retirement package from the Saints.
