2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

You're partly right but you're missing the point.

We know many players are out-of-contract end 2026. And many veterans OOC end 27 (Wood, Hill, Macrae, Wilkie). With only a small number already on long-term deals (King, Higgins etc).

So with front-ended deals, carry forward excess and a relatively clean sheet, they've planned a raid. And it's coming off, bit-by-bit.

What I'm saying is, the cap isn't unlimited and undoubtedly this will have flow-on effects with attempts to re-sign existing players. Maybe we'll keep Windy, but it'll be someone else in question next year.

While we may be happy getting TDK and others, just don't be surprised when we aren't happy losing existing players in coming years.
Wow, groundbreaking stuff right there.

You’ve been carrying on about the salary cap for months, and a couple of months ago you didn’t know how excess SC %’s worked yet you continue to preach how we are stuffing everything up without knowing 1 single players wage. You’re making up hypothetical scenarios in 2-3 years, with hypothetical numbers.

I like that we are having a crack
It feels a bit like 2 years or bust…
But even with names recruits coming …we are further than 2 years away ….
Aleer TDK Ryan aren’t pushing us into flag contention ….i know our kids will develop …so will other sides ….
Nervous we’ve gone hard early OR
Is 2 years to get us into contention …Boss steps out then Enright has enough for a sustained tilt ??
High risk
Look, it’s not science and more hope. But Ross thinks King adds 2 goals for us. Add in Ryan.

I’d hope 2 of Howard/Aleer/Jsos* save us 2 more.

You hope natural development says we gain a goal a game in development.

5 goal swing.

Based on our season that has us anywhere between 5-9 additional wins.

Now that Harry Boyd has been delisted after 1 x less then average AFL game and 12 x average VFL games, I am going to get on my 'soap box' and highlight I told you so. Its now been proven to be a very poor list management decision at the time, yet the rubbish I copped for having a contrary opinion was interesting. He was never going to be an upgrade on Heath or other rucking options we had on the list.

Now to re-consider what my thinking was at the time as a result of the strength of last years draft.

As a result of jamming Boyd into our last list spot we over looked Lennox Hofmann (NGA medium tall defender), Zak Johnson (midfielder), Cody Anderson (midfielder), Luke Kennedy (midfielder) at the draft.

Then re-added a crippled Crouch at the rookie draft and overlooked other SSP options. Crouch retires after attempting a come back, when that decision should have been made for him much earlier.

Then overlooked this years mid season draft completely where there were players we should have looked at like Tom McCarthy (back flanker ball magnet), Harrison Ramm (200cm key defender), Archer May (198cm tall forward & Ex Dragon player), Liam McMahon (198cm tall forward) or even relisted Oscar Adams we were so short on tall defenders.

Not all the players listed above will have long AFL careers, but the majority will play a lot more games than Boyd was ever going to, some might even become 100-150 game players.

Yeah if he hasn't signed this week I'll be starting to panic a bit.

I think it's just crazy we have a longer term deal in front of a 29 year old small forward that looks to be past his best than we do for one of our best young prospects.

It's obvious that it's the money windy wants over 4 years that is the problem for us, not the 4 years.

We obviously see him as a high risk of being on big bucks playing vfl in a few years after being overtaken by the likes of garcia, pou, wilson, box etc.

Boyd was roma injury insurance.
You don't get upset when you don't use your insurance.
You feel happy that things didn't go to custard.

You are crowing because a break glass emergency played 1 game in the ruck. Marshall didn’t miss a game either.

If they wanted a pick at the MSD they could have moved Dow/Cordy/King to the LTI list.

It’s what was always said to you. A mature body in the event we need it. A Mature body that showed something in the practice games. Got a gig round 1 and was never seen again.

If you pull your out ..... it is the opportunities missed and what we over looked in one of the strongest drafts in years. Break in case of emergency players are 1980's thinking not current day list management.

Use Cordy as an example where did he get us? What benefit was adding him to the list over developing kid.

Im all for shitting on the club when we get it wrong (god there’s a lot of opportunity)

We needed to do this cause he was still contracted for this year and wanted to pay him out of the salary as he couldn’t get medically retired.

Club did nothing wrong and by having him on the list he’s had access to the facilities for his knees.

We took 7 including Armstrong last year.

We didn’t miss anything. We feasted on the opportunity that draft provided.

I disagree with that, based purely on the fact that Boyd replaced Campbell, so one or the other needed to be on the list - it would have been professionally negligent to go into the season relying on Heath, Keeler or Dodson as our back-up ruck.

No chance he plays vfl and of those mentioned only Garcia would have any chance of playing the role Windhager does.

Have a look at what he’s done this year and his body of work at 22 then go and find me a replacement if you can. Imo you won’t and if you could he’d be on very good or better money and cost a first rounder.

Just make the kid an improved offer and hopefully lock him away. Quality local kid whose a standard setter on the track and in the community as well.

every team has break glass in case of emergency players though....

Why, or bust?

TDK and Aleer are long-term recruits.

Ryan is yes maybe 3 years. Trade cost should not be too high, or he will not join.

JSOS who may not join us is a FA and is only 27. 28 next year.

In addition, I presume that we still draft with our first round pick, and then pick at Fincher at a discount/or for free hit, and maybe Jackson Voss as FS (maybe Rookie FS).

So that is one older player, two longterm players, one medium to longterm player, and probably three kids. Ryan is the only real top-up acquisition.

Mavbe a Mystery Mid, who if they arrive will be on the youngish side and will be a longterm player.

Feels like we’re 80% through the build and instead of being patient and sitting through the last 20% we’re just going all gas no brakes
The build also requires trade acquisitions to be completed and drafting is about done if you look at the player profiles rather than who's fit for best 22 just yet. A young KPF is all that's really missing

How many picks do you think the average club takes at the draft?

They brought in a 27 year old state league ruck and delisted him at the end of the season. It was for one reason. To back up Marshall if he went down as we had 2 unproven rucks behind him and 1 was an 18 year old and Heath was struggling significantly at that point.

I think in part with Ryan that the reason also is the "Keep Nas Happy" Factor as he knows Ryan, and Ryan wants to play with Nas.

What is the original source of this mystery mid rumour?

There have been several different posters referring to a young mid that we are chasing. No ITKs though that I recall.
It may be genuine, or it may just be bullshit.

But even if genuine it would be a trade scenario and so may not happen.
