2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

Don’t want to lose our first at all, we are no where near in the position yet to be trading first round picks away we still need to draft kids. But maybe they really rate fincher as that first round level prospect, he might be better behind close doors than what is being predicted.
There is no chance we don't have a first round pick this year - whether its our current pick, an earlier pick, or a later pick. We are steadfast in taking a first round talent + Fincher this year

Would think the nepo baby thing is just part of the media game and story beat up, how did you think Hardwick will react to it even though it’s industry wide knowledge… Basically act outraged to the media but has a chuckle and thumbs up in private. At least we had the balls to point it out.

And now is payback for giving them a AA (Long) on the cheap
Actually I think we got a pretty good pick for Long, if I recall correctly.

That sounds good if we have already put work into this and it isn't a spur of the moment thing.
We put the work into him two years ago. Then Dimma went from being burnt out to fresh as a daisy after the AFL waved some of that smelling cash under his nose and Flanders decided to stay after Dimma pumped his tires.

If we get Flanders.. we are losing somebody! Windy or Steele I’d assume.

Flanders, Macrae, Steele, Windy, Boxshall, Garcia, NAS, Pou all get CBA’s. Throw in Hall & Clark who can rotate in too.

Too many mouths to feed if we get Flanders, will be interesting to see what happens.

It will depend on our salary cap situation? We have moved on Cordy, Webster has retired and Jones will most likely be delisted so that would have to release some $$$. Hunter Clark I dont know what he is on but he is the player I would trade out firstly, before Steele or anyone else.

As far as picks go we can now trade picks 2 years in advance, so there is plenty of chance for flexibility.

the time to trade hunter was 4-5 years ago. he's done. you aint getting shit for him now unless a club like WCE is desperate.

Flanders played mid in 2024..

Averaged:
31 disposals
79% disposal efficiency
4 clearances
Also kicked 11 goals

He can absolutely accumulate the footy, probably isn’t very good pressure wise.. only averaged 2 tackles for the year.
No he didn't. People thinking Flanders played full time mid all year in 2024 is a complete myth

He played 8 matches above 50% cbas - rounds 0,1,8 and 16-21

The patch between 3-15 was all at half back where he racked it up in the role equivalent to our role for Sinclair. This majorly inflated his disposal numbers without much impact. Hence why there's an average of only 4 clearances on his stats sheet. The period after round 21 I'm not sure but it definitely wasn't through the midfield - it was either half back or half forward

Trading with the Suns is an interesting one. Based on Twomey's Phantom Draft (which is usually dead on) their academy players are going at #1, #4, & #23.

That's a points total of 5615 - with the 10% discount on matching picks they need to go into draft night with around 5054 points. They can go into deficit for a total of 1167 points on the night to give them some flexibility (this is around #12 next year).

They currently have #6, #10, #15, #28 and #26 for a total of 4,413. Any pick from around #20 - #22 will put them at the points they want to be sitting at going into the draft.

In years gone by they might have tried to trade back in this draft for future picks but with the DVI and discount both getting cut that probably won't be as live an option with the DVI drop.

Long story short we don't necessarily need to get a pick with the actual value of Flanders, we just need to get our hands on about 600 points, or two picks in the mid 30s.

I think you need to be open to far more possibilities.

They might decide they want to retain Marshall.

Trade down with the eagles to get Ryan and trade that Hawks pick for Flanders.

And thus they have burnt 1 pick and retained a first in nexts years supposedly stronger draft.

Everything needs to be on the table.

Including trading any or all of: Steele Marshall Windhager Heath.

They have obviously done far more work than any whispers heard or anything the industry media picked up. Which would make it hard to get 4 trades done if it is Aleer over JSOS.

Which simultaneously makes JSOS a far more attractive option as he would be a free agent. More dependable but smaller and can’t impact aerially in the vein of Aleer.

I think the FS boat has sailed. A draft watcher (not Bf) had confirmed IIRC. It’s either at first eligible draft or after nomination and presumably he nominated for his 18yo draft.

There is no maximum age for Father Sons that I can see, just the normal minimum age requirement.

There is however:
No Prior Registration :

A person cannot be included on a club’s Primary List under the Father-Son system if he has, at any time, been registered with the AFL as a player with any club.

Voss has not been registered as an AFL player with any club.

FOR every nominated father-son player, each club in the competition has the option to bid for the player, in reverse ladder order. If a bid is made, the club that nominated the father-son player must use its next available selection if it wishes to retain its hold on that player.

If the club nominating the father-son player declines to match the selection nominated, the club with the successful bid must use that selection at the draft on that player.

Any club that makes a successful bid on a father-son selection is bound to use the pick they nominate.

If no bid is made by another club, the club that nominated the father-son eligible player will forfeit its last selection in the draft to select the player.

The eligibility of players under the father-son rules differs depending upon the home state of the team making the selection. The basic rule, as applied to Victorian clubs, is that each club can select any player whose father played a minimum of 100 senior games for the side.

Age Requirement
  • Minimum Age:
Players must be at least 18 years old on or before December 31 of the draft year to be eligible for the AFL Draft.

  • Nominations for Underage Players:
If a player has not yet turned 18 at the time of nomination, their parent or guardian must submit the nomination on their behalf.
Father-Son Rule Requirements

  • Father's Playing Record: The father must have played at least 100 games for the club that is hoping to draft their son.
  • Nomination: The player's club can then nominate the son under the father-son rule.
  • Bidding Process: Clubs can place a bid on the nominated father-son player, and the father's club will then have the opportunity to draft the son by using a pick that matches the value of the highest bid.

You do realise you can pull his individual game stats.

I think anything is possible EXCEPT trading out of this draft

Imo we need one more top quality young talent and we are in a good spot to land that this year

I'd be much more inclined to trade out the guys you mentioned + say a Clark or even a Hastie to accommodate these guys

Also, did you change your mind on the belief that our drafting period started in 2023?

No, I still think it starts from the nas windy Owens draft.

If they think this draft is weak. Then it makes sense to trade out and hit next years when they don’t have cap room to target players.

Ok I stand corrected, played some mid in 2024**

Can accumulate the footy in a few different positions.

Round 16: 33 disposals 6 clearances
Round 17: 27 disposals 6 clearances
Round 18: 30 disposals 4 clearances
Round 19: 43 disposals 9 clearances
Round 20: 33 disposals 7 clearances
Round 21: 25 disposals 3 clearances

All while playing midfield, I’d be pretty keen to get him on board. As anything, depends on trade price and $$$$.

This is interesting from Edmund.

The Saints are spreading the word that they will acquire Flanders in the exchange window after making contact with Gold Coast about a trade in the middle of the year.

Bit of dumpage ya reckon? Gimme that Jack Bowes type deal.

Thats A 10 Ice Cream GIF

I'm a huge Flanders fan but Gold Coast are going to be absolutely pricks if he wants to come to us. They are not happy at all about our comments so wont make anything easy for us.
Gold Coast are going to need so many picks this year to get their academy kids in. I think they would know losing players is going to have to happen.

Could be their last free lunch too.
