2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Let's (AFL) just have 1 year contracts for all players
I think this is just sour grapes from WB,but why are players starting to whinge about what other players salaries are.
Aren't they the ones that signed off on their current

Dont players sign a contract if there happy with whats offered to them.
Correct

Gary Lyon nailed it tonight on 360… forget the dollars, TDK and Silvagni both make us a better football team. So does Aleer, Ryan and Flanders….

TDK and Silvagni are also both free agents, so you give up nothing other than a contract to get them.

Opposition supporters are never going to heap praise on us, forget the outside noise and focus on how competitive it will be to get a game at the saints next year.
This the same Gary Lyon that last week was saying how ridiculous the $$ being offered to TDK was as he's a $500k player?

Where did he say that, or is this just the media scuttlebutt? Not having a go at you, just interested as I haven’t seen anything outside media murmurings.
I just remember when it happened, pretty much at end of the home & away games
A radio station l think.
He stated that he was disgruntled with player payments, moreso with Aleer possibly getting the same money as him.
Then he quickly met with RTB to shut down any talk of wanting to leave

MAKE HIM CAPTAIN IMMEDIATELY

The fact that we continued to vote Jack Steele in as club captain for many years while Cal Wilkie was on our list will surely be viewed in the future as one of the biggest blunders our club has made in the Ross 2.0 era

So, as an ex S African, where we speak Afrikaans, often referred to as kitchen Dutch, as the Dutch colonised SA in 1652 ( school history.) my take is that it should be pronounced phonetically as De Kouning - with the ou sound as in tour.

Koning means King - so we now have a pair of them, just not the pair we imagined we’d get. Still, interesting that they are both twins.
Does he have another brother? Or did Sam want to stay in the womb for another couple of years...

It's funny, because Owens (rightly) and Max and Higgins always catch flack for their set shot goal kicking when compared top previous years, it was Sharman who regressed. The only game we had more scoring shots and lost this season Sharman kicked 3.3.

We've reliably been one of the most accurate teams for a while now.
Sharman is an excellent ball user especially by foot, not just kicking for goal- rarely wastes a possession.

This is harsh on Steele, even if true
Probably want to lay off that stuff here.
He is still a member of our club.

The players vote for the captain. Take it up with the ones that work with him day in day out.

He apparently whinged earlier to the media about our trades ins & how much we were offering/paying them, old news.
Meantime, Ross said he sat down with all the senior players earlier in the season to explain the strategy. And they all got bonuses.
So I might take what the media says with a pinch of salt.
You want to be a successful team? There will always be players earning more.

Wow Saints have rattled a few clubs, Whateley reporting Collingwood and Bulldogs felt 'played' by the Silvagni deal.

Now Bulldogs trying the same play on the club that played them. A slight problem though, the player they targetted is contracted, was paid a bonus earlier this year, has publicly stated he loves the club, will in all probability be the next captain.
This in concert with a strategy to bring in backmen to give Wilks a chop out and Lyon publicly stating good clubs don't trade contracted players.
The Saints strategy is not scattergun. It has been plotted for the past two seasons for this exact time. The only wrinkle was the overpay for NAZ, which for the club was a good thing, but not ideal for list management.
However the Saints knew they would ruffle feathers and these EXACT scenario's would have been wargamed by the List Management team. Extensions for the likes of Wilkie would already have been factored in and we have two years to convince him. If we improve, it wont be hard to resign him or NAZ.
Seems a bit amateur and dated reactionary recruiting from the Bulldogs.
Awww diddums….🙄

Of course it is. And what do you know about the leadership and fabric of the club that the players don't?
Absolutely nothing. From a nuffie point of view, it is clear to me Steele doesnt have what it takes to inspire his teammates to fight the good fight on-field and watching him communicate, it's little wonder. Wilkie seems better at this but I could easily be wrong I guess.

I think above all else
Jack Steele pushes players standards by the way he plays & trains
And the captaincy is player voted.
So, go ahead & disagree, but don't shame the lad.
