2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

As recently as last year, they agreed to trade Houston to get back into last year's draft.

They gave up a first rounder to get 2 2nd rounders from Freo to get Soldo and Ratugolea (1 may have worked and the other not but that's besides the point)

Gave up a first round pick in this year's draft for Luko

Gave up a few first rounders to trade for JHF

Butters, Rozee and Bergman were over 5 years ago so not really something that is worth arguing about in this discussion. But they indeed did trade up to pick 5 to get Rozee.

You cannot say that they would've done all these trades even if the rules were otherwise as proposed. The investment has already been made from a NGA and F/S both financially and in terms of development, not just by Port but by Qld, NSW clubs, Port, Kangas, Freo, Blues, Bombers have prospects lined up in the next 2-3 years which is what the period of outlook is for list managers. The AFL can't just turn around now and say it's off-limits. If they were going to do that they might as well start it from this draft.
So you have an advantage not all clubs had and you believe it only to be fair to allow you that advantage that will both simultaneously screw the clubs after you and punish the clubs without the advantage still?

Two thoughts on Marshall.

1) Geelong makes so much sense for him, you can't really blame him. If his contract is minimal based on its payment structure - is he able to renegotiate that with Geelong? It would be pretty enticing for him if his salary suddenly went from $250k to $900k.

Of course, for if we trade him his current contract would be null and void. So he will ona new contract with the Cats, and not St Kilda.

However, he knows what he signed up for, and that he was being part-paid in advance so the club could land other players in 26/27.

So this needs to factor into any trade deal. Either we get a player that the Cats part pay the salary of or Geelong stumps up extra trade value for him to recognise this.

2) Ross has played this beautifully with his comments about Geelong. Imagine our ins with SDK instead of Aleer. I know SDK may be untouchable, but they'll have to give up serious collateral for Roma, 1 pick that will end up late 20s wont cut it.
The Cats will not give us SDK, and SDK may not be keen to leave the Cats either.

Silvagni is a more natural player, a better decision maker and more versatile imo.
Josh plays every game and is very consistent.

I'd take Josh. But we've got Jack.
I’m pretty happy with Jack. But he has only really done it down back.

Battle performed up forward on a wing for awhile and down back.

Disagreeing with you isn't sooking.

It's just disagreeing with you.

Said I don't think he should be captain next year. That's clearly stating an opinion.

Here's a thought Joffa... you could allow people to have opinions. Disagree with them, sure, but not accuse of sooking... not telling them it's confirmation bias and other such drivel.

You think Steele should be captain? Cool. I don't. See how easy that is?
You aren't disagreeing with me. I have no more knowledge of the club and its workings than you do. Absolute base of ignorance. So in saying that, considering the players are the ones that are the ones that know what the KRA's are and what they require, I would take their view over a fan that has zero idea of what is required.
So with that in mind, you cannot state as a fact the 44 players are wrong because you watch a match.
In saying that I would prefer Wilkie as captain, but zi have no idea of what is required.

I didn't think Josh did well up forward or on the wing.
Jack has been a decent second ruck and okayish forward.
Both good defenders.
I think we're all worried about Jack's durability.

Keen for Pencil Case to come over here and embarrass himself again after the Jack Macrae sage last year 🤣
im waiting for yoda to come over from the essendon board and make the triple admission from end of 2023

A.you guys were right, shiel for your gresham compo pick was a foolish suggestion
B.sorry i couldnt let it go and kept pushing it on you for months, despite you all politely telling me to go forth and multiply
C.gresham is a spud & our recruitment and talent spotting team is cooked

but geez another bout with pencil case, spare me

It can never hurt to say “look I think I deserve a bit more. Give me a bit more now and I’ll sign up for an extra two years”. It’s hardly unheard of.

I am not saying that Wilkie has even said that. The point I am making is that I have seen no evidence outside of scuttlebutt that Wilkie is “whinging”. And even if he has asked the question above, and I am not suggesting he has, that in and of itself is not “whinging”.
He shouldnt be getting involved in list management decisions,
It's not like we are over paying these in-coming players on purpose
It is what the market is dictating.
And we want to improve the playing group & push for finals.
Wilkie could be given the captaincy next year & will get a pay upgrade,
which means he is getting well rewarded.

Who says he is?

All I have been trying to say is that he’s not whinging, even if asking the question, and who knows if he is even doing that. It’s all media scuttlebutt.

Again, there may just be loyalty towards Jack from the players. It's not uncommon.

Regardless, I don't necessarily think having the captain decided by a players vote is the best possible way to go about it.

As for Jack, I'd like to see him move on as I'd rather see Nas, Hugo, Pou, Boxshall, Windy, Hall, (heaven forbid, Owens), De Armas, etc get more midfield time with Macrae in there doing his thing. I'd rather see Jack traded while he still has some value.

I think management would have a veto if a bad selection was made. Reference Cousins / Judd.

My observation is that it's almost entirely mental pressure. They don't miss much when warming up but come game time it starts to get dicey. Kicking for the win I'd only really trust Hall and Sharman - which is why Nas surprised me against Melbourne.
Keeler seems like a steady set shot too.

Common sense, if we were in Ports position and the year before we're set to start signing Riewoldt boys they change the rules on us you'd be filthy.

Father son and to a lesser degree, academies, are good for the game, but only if clubs are forced to pay a fair price. No need to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Just regarding SDK, I don't disagree that they wont give him up. But that should be the cost of poaching Marshall with 2 years left. Sorry Ro, they just didn't want you bad enough in the end...

How would you know? You are ignorant about the operations of the players and what they do.
Yes and no: we are not ignorant about what they do, we have a ringside seat to see them every weekend, watch how they handle adversity, to observe the mood of the team overall, what happens when a teammate is bullied, how they celebrate personal milestones, small victories, wins etc.

I'd agree that there's plenty that goes on even on field that we can't detect, and of course nearly everything offfield, but wouldn't you agree the way we play is partly the result of how the team is led?

I suppose it comes down to what you value in a leader.

Well, we did get Elle McPherson to put on a Saints jumper.
Might not be out of the question to get Ana De Armas too.

I think the point is the only clubs kicking up a stink are the clubs with something to lose. I love the heartfelt discussions the Northern clubs' execs give on the topic.

You don't hear any of them complaining about the inequalities of the Marvel Stadium deal though.

They only care about things when it affects them.
