2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

I love Marshall, but surely the right thing to do is take a first-round pick for him.
Marshall helps the Cats waaaay more than pick 15 (which will slide several spots) helps us

Plus, he's contracted and we've paid most of that contract's value due to it being front ended. It would literally take SDK or Pick 15 + Brad Close to be worth our while

Ross Lyon and more importantly Tony74 said Ro is going nowhere. More than comfortable with that - Geelong can seriously GaGF. Wouldn’t make them better for P18 and their F1.

We need to improve and moving Marshall doesn’t make any sense if we’re bringing in senior bodies to help us have a genuine crack at it.

Can’t understand why anyone would think that doing Geelong a huge favour is worthwhile for picks in terrible drafts.

Hoping the below would be sufficient for Flanders but I’d be just as happy to send them our P7 without anything coming back.

Flanders + GC P30 for StK P7

So how many key defenders do you want in the team? Who do you pick in the seniors from Wilkie, Howard, Silvagni, Aleer, Tauru and Caminiti? Keeping in mind that King, Sharman, Marshall and Owens are automatic marking forward picks so there is no room Caminiti or Tauru forward.

I think that Steele should be traded if we can get anything back for him. Not sure that's going to happen though. I also don't think there's any point in keeping both Marshall and TDK (would have preferred to just have Marshall at less than half the cost of TDK but that ship has sailed)

you should change your handle from mad-saint-guy to mad-ateverythingthesaintsdo-guy....think that would be more fitting tbh

The league is money hungry and so much of what they do is driven by crowd numbers.

It wont change for several reasons, self interest is the horse that’s always running to win. We’re on the outside looking in trying as hard as to can to get some change, how’s that working out ?.

We’re getting smashed from all sides for having the gall to ask for a fair go. The league isn’t about equality they pay lip service to it and nothing more.

I don’t support the current system I just don’t see it changing in a hurry.
We are both in agreement.

Ross completely running the show
I think Bassat has his hands all over it.
Particularly in the planning and execution of this strategy.
The list choices - absolutely Lyon.

Windy looks to be a winger who can run with someone if needed. Macrae took Steele’s spot. Then you have (potentially) Flanders or Mackenzie, Nas, Phillipou, Garcia, Boxshall, Hall, Wilson, Travaglia etc all going though there. I don’t think there’s much room for Steele at this point of his career if we can get a half decent return.
Box looks like he'll be Steele 2.0 with a hint of Dal Santo. Very excited about him

Is someone keeping tabs on our supporter enemies' list--first, Port, then Norf, then Carlscum, then Hoks and now Dogs.

I know quite a few dogs fans and they all hate us like we seem to hate the Roos. The 2009 Prelim seemed to start the rivalry but they sook about its all the time and act like they are a small club that doesn't live on welfare like us.

Isn't it a contractual agreement with the MCC,as opposed to numbers?

It is but **** Geelong anyway. They are the only Vic club to get to keep their suburban ground advantage. They still get all the benefits of a seperate home ground that the rest are denied. Financially and competitively it's a massive boost.

Interesting, my family who are all Bulldogs supporters never mention the PF's to me. The time we spoke about it they seemed pretty fair.
Maybe because alot live on the Bellerine peninsula they have bigger fish to hate in Geelong.
They really aren't enamoured with Bailey Sniff playing there.

Not really understanding why we would trade Marshall.
Something I haven’t heard much say is his biggest asset is playing allongside King.
King has an enormous deficiency,he doesn’t cope with the physical stuff. He is roughed up every week by 2-3 players at a time.Marshalls elite aerial marking along with a physical mindset releases King up.
Pick 15 for a contracted Ruck/Forward,in a weak draft where we are going for a premiership -Geelong GAGF.
Just on a side note,I was involved in a Stkilda feedback forum back in Feb of this year, 7 odd of us was asked about Stkilda and its role in the AFL amongst other things.
Interesting to see what was proposed back then and current events.
To give a bit of a taste of what was said .Our reaction to this misssion statement, or words to this effect.Remember this was 3 months after AB slur on the NGA F &S.
Stkilda is a foundation member of the AFL.We are unrelenting in our pursuit in achieving a premiership. We do not give a f..ck (yes f..ck)about other Clubs opinions, and we are unrelenting in our goal of excellence in servicing our world wide membership.
This was one of 4 mission statements we were asked opinions of .The other 3 were much more meek and milder.
My answer to this-There is absolutely no element of truth in this statement, perhaps should relate to a club with more than 1 premiership.
Seeing what they are doing ,I think my opinion has changed.

There was no noise about playing finals at Vic Park, The Western Oval and Princess Park back in the day, only when the threat was gone did Geelong and their supporters start pushing this agenda... just another Geelong scenario with things to gain and nothing to lose.

Very interesting article by Wilson in the Age today about the strategy adopted by the Saints and it is exactly what has been discussed here.
1.Put in place over a year ago
2. Supporter groups saw Saints as 'meek'. I remember saying similar in the after season review the Saints sens members, I obviously wasn't alone.
3. Deliberate FU to other clubs over FS and NGA. Effect is rule changes in 26
4. Confirmed that NWM would not have been traded and would have ended in the PSD going to WCE.
5. Lyon decided in August to go after JSOS, and got Allen on to it.
6 The big one is her affirmation that we only paid 83% of the SC this year. And also money for Billings and Crouch
So my calculations for excess SC
2 X 5% Savings on SC = 1.83 million
17% in Savings in 25. = 3.11 million

A warchest of nearly 5 million.
Unknowns and estimates
Billings and Crouch = 500k?
All contracts have no future SC increases built in, estimates vary but likely 1.5 to 2 million increase.
After paying 95% of the cap a club can pay 105% the following year, not sure if this is part of the current calculations but a potential 915k extra.
So what we can confidently say is Saints had a minimum 5 million to spend in trade period 2025.
If the 105% rule is invoked this year, that's 5.9 million.
Then going take off Billings and Crouch, we could have had up to 6.5 million over the cap to spend in 2025.
Going forward, any increase of SC has not been factored in to contracts.
Figures have a little bit of rigour as we know the SC total, the years we saved SC, the 105 % rule on SC spend, and Wilson has mentioned a number of times 83 to 85% spend on SC in 2025.
So in future you can just laugh at idiot oppo supporters when they talk about SC, the figures, based on known facts ( except Caro's figure of course, that can't be corroborated) are all above.
As for the strategy, it is bold and decisive, has rattled the AFL, oppo clubs and coaches as can be seen by the petulant salty offer by the Western nepo babies towards a contracted and happy Wilkie.

About time this club grew some balls. I say bravo. You have got me back as a 11 game member with a reserved seat for next season.
Thanks Joffa, I had just read the article. If anyone is still worried about our cap situation just consider point 6. If you take out what we paid JB and Crouch this year we're probably under 80% of the cap at the moment.

Don't understand it really. They play the MCG so well as shown again last night.

True, with regards to interstate teams, but if they earn a home final vs Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond or Carlton then they should be able to play them at Kardinia Park.

Doesn't make sense they play at home ground of the side that didn't earn a home final.

And, I reiterate, I hate Geelong

Dogs fans are clearly pissed off at not getting jSOS

Why else would they be so emotive and invested over on the general board?
We're running out of teams to piss off really.

  • The Northern Nepo Babies are riled up about the threat to the academy gravy train
  • Port and Adelaide are livid Nas knocked them back
  • Carlton are up in arms their refugees running to us

Why not add the Doggies to the list after they failed to undercut us?
