2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th

Why does it matter?

If we open the season in Melbourne in round 0 against the pies - as a spuds game. It will be an unbelievable event and if it’s annual. It will be mammoth

Swann doesn't like the staggered starts, he mentioned he wanted it changed back to a normal fixture.

Be even better if we could get our new look ressies to run on in a curtain raiser!
Bloody oath! Would love that, but seems unlikely to happen.

Main points from the Wilson vid:
  • Caro understands that there will be an All-Vic game on Sunday night (Labour Day eve) at the MCG in Opening Rd
  • Pies are petitioning to stay at home for the coming Opening Rounds
  • Will defo be 2 Queensland games and 2 Sydney games plus this MCG match
  • St Kilda is proposing to play Collingwood every year in Opening Rd as a Spud's Game
  • Next year will be the 60th anniv of our GF win vs Pies, (our only cup in case we forgot, thanks Caro)
  • Club view this event as perfect opportunity to launch the documentary we'd started making directly after Nas extended his contract
  • Dogs (once again) are all "What about meeeeeee?" - I'm guessing they've been working on their proposal forrrrrrrr about a week - Demons also trying to get in on the act
  • There could be an international music guest being on the bill as well (Meat Loaf might be free*)
  • This will be part of St Kilda's consistent recent campaign to play more at the MCG, this is our only request with the fixturing.
*relax that was a joke

Keep Cal and Windy and it's hats off to the club for me.

I'd be happy to see Ro stay but if he goes, so be it. We got TDK for a reason. He looks like he's clearly a better tap ruckman. What we'd miss with Ro I'd be hoping Keeler can fill that space.

I'd like to see Steele traded as he'd still have some value and playing him and Macrae together isn't the way forward imo, not with the younger players we have coming through.

It feels like (and who freakin' knows really) the club's strategy has caused a shake up and they've just had to manage a few things.

I still don't really see it with Aleer but hopefully Corey Enright can weave some magic there.

Some ridiculous takes on Windy here the last few days. One of our best late in the season. Would absolutely hate to see him in another club's jumper.

It's beyond Purple to write anything positive about us. I'm sure if you checked his "If..then" BS he writes on Fridays I'd be surprised if you could find one decent comment about us all year.
We are his reliable go-to whipping boy when he wants to bag anyone. I'm sure he'll be watching and hoping we fall on our faces next year so he can say how much money we've wasted. I bet the articles are already written in anticipation.
The best thing about RTB coming back to us was that Lyon was Purple's man crush when he was at Freo. He probably had a wank poster of him on his bedroom wall. It must've really cut him when Lyon returned to the Saints.
Oh I think you're forgetting all the backhanded complements and patronising he's doled out. As if we need him for our validation, the bloke is obsessed though, Spud Frawley must have absolutely monstered him

Barrett is spiteful and his tone is unprofessional.

His sarcasm in wishing us good luck at the end of the article is vituperative.

Ignore his mendacious scribbling.

I am not a huge fan of Round 0 but the "ladder being a mess" excuse is laughable .... this happens across a myriad of sports across the world where tables/ladders can be out of whack ..... in the end it doesnt matter ..... winning is all that matters

As for winning ... if the AFL are deadset on keeping Round 0 then we may as well try and cash in and a Saints v Pies MCG clash (our home game) would be enormous for the club ..... absolutely huge!!
beats being shunted to every corner of the country to open our season

I'm very very glad to hear that we're back in the box seat to retain Windy. Losing a 22 year old mid/winger/tagger who is improving every year, sets standards on the track and is a popular member of our young core would be a disaster.

I think it makes a lot of sense for us to trade Steele for draft capital as I'm not convinced that he'll be in our best 23 next year. If his performance is on par with the likes of Boxshall and Garcia, then we get more future return by giving that senior experience to the kids.

Marshall is the tricky one. I don't think that TDK and Marshall will work in the same team, but imagine the heat we'd cop if TDK gets injured (which happens every season) while Marshall dominates with Geelong. If we're serious about doing everything possible to win as many games as we can over the next couple of years, then we should keep him. If we're more focused on extracting the most long term benefit, then we trade him for Geelong's first. Marshall is also a big body that we could plonk forward if King can't get on the park - I don't think he'd crack more than 30 goals from a season at FF, but he would at least bring the ball to ground.

So according to Barrett if we don't make a prelim next year our plan is a fail...
The fact is, we're bringing in 4 new players on generous long-term deals, and they'll be 29, 28, 27 and 25 by next year's finals series and have 3, 4, 7 and 3 years left on their deals.

Perhaps prelim next year is a little overcooked, but if St Kilda hasn't played in a semi-final by the end of 2027 it'll be totally fair to question the current moves.

I have no issue with Aleer apart from his wage as with TDK. If Aleer was a cheap top up on minimum wage I'd probably be ecstatic about it. I think it's my issue not his. If he comes as a DFA he's low risk.

TDK too, he can play and his wage and contract isn't his fault.

Yeah, we've rolled the dice, this needs too have a pretty decent impact or the pressure starts to build on us. If we don't make finals we'd want decent injury excuses.

Totally agree, we need to get moving. But no prelim next year being a fail is dumb. Finals has to be the benchmark though in 2026.

How does this guy have a job in the AFL media? For the AFL website no less. He's a dead set joke.
He’s gonna be so salty when Ross has Nas on his shoulders with a premiership cup in hand in 12 months time

At the risk of going on about TDK…. I haven’t been as bullish about a recruit in recent memory.

Yes Ill admit I do love a quality ruck, but watching him early in the year, I haven’t seen a big bloke with that presence and impact in years. I’m confident without the contract stuff hanging over his head, he will be the most dominant big man in the comp and the contract will look fine. Also hence why I’m ok with trading Ro.

Big call I know, but I’m sticking to it.

Unfortunately we won't play in a semi at any point in the next couple of seasons.

Finishing undefeated on top and winning your first final means you go straight to the prelim and skip the semi.
