2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

By saying I thought there was smoke with Wilkie and the Dogs? WTF are you on about. This looks like your mate SOS has ****ed up his job again if Wilkie walks out. We aren't getting Richards or Bont. We'll end up with a couple of firsts and that is around his value.

It will do nothing for us and set us backwards over the next few years. If we stay bottom 8 we probably start leaking youth to bigger clubs who know we've locked up too much cap in a few players. We can never just relax as Saints fans. The club ind new elaborate ways to do dumb shit. Losing your elite players for GOPs is idiocy.
Here we go again.....someone else threw a big sack of cash at one of our players and we're at fault.......

What would be 'immediately productive' is you are giving Geelong fc exactly what they need.
And not everyone agrees with you on Flanders
We need a proven elite mid.
Not someone who played mid. for 1 year.
Which elite mid will want to join us? Butters? Neale? Rowe? Anderson? Callaghan? Daicos? Dawson? McCluggage? Ashcroft? Merrett? Dangerfield, Cripps? That's right, they are not available or they don't want to join us.

So do we just wait for one to join us in 2030 or whenever the stars aligns? no, of course not, we keep improving with our own young players and trade in other young mids with high potential looking for midfield opportunities. That's how we got Steele. It's definitely the right strategy that's why we are going after Flanders and Mackenzie. Because you never know, under the right coaching and system, these 2 might just become elite. Because no young player becomes A grade overnight. Even Anderson, Neale took a while to find their feet.

Wilkie is contracted. If contract means nothing, then every contracted player who's played well for a few games is going to ask their agent to field offers from rival clubs. The good thing is we don't have to do anything, Wilkie is our play for another 2 years unlike Nas' situation. We can offer him an extention with a raise, but no need to match Bulldogs $1.5M. Bulldogs has only got the easy part done, satisfy the player with more money, they would need to satisfy the club in a trade that we can't say no to. I would say we played perfectly.

We know the older brigade from the Richo/Ratten days are very comfortable and not setting the standards we need to excel as a club, instead it's the likes of Winhager, Philipou, Owens that are pushing the group. Where have you heard that before in any professional club. Basically if Steele, Wilkie and Marshall goes, it's a changing of guard and passing the keys to the young leaders, whether it's planned or by luck, I'm all for it. We've been mediocre for way too long, need to be bold and compete at the highest level for a change.
I don’t think the current admin believes in leaving anything to chance. When Lyon came back Bassett said we would building around King, NAS, Windy, Owens and Pou, not Steele, Wilkie, Marshall and Sinclair. I don’t think much has changed except that we want to be able to contend a bit earlier. We’re still building around the young core.

Still yapping about stuff that will never happen. Very unbecoming!

One of my mates is at Ed Richards' wedding right now - I've asked him to quietly spread a story about Wilkie calling Bevo a smarmy little glasses-wearing campaigner just to snuff out any remaining chance of him moving.

Geelong has not yet ruled out considering Curnow’s services in the trade period but its first priority is securing St Kilda ruckman Rowan Marshall.

It believes Marshall is keen to consider the Cats as his new club but St Kilda has made clear it is hesitant to trade him..
The Marshall deal would almost certainly require the club’s first-round pick and erode the club’s trade collateral.

First round pick is the opening bid which will be rightly shot down. If we choose to part with Marshall, the trade needs to hurt (them more than us).

Saints want players and not picks.

Geelong will have to offer up a very good player in a trade.

Especially now that their first priority is securing Marshall.

He is a very important need for them going forward.

Contracted for another 2 years.

Looks like Wilkie is gone then. at 29, no way he would walk away from an extra $2M. And we probably wouldn't match the $1.5M a season deal. It's unfortunate, but this is part of the AFL landscape now, we'd better get used to it.

Why couldn't one of our rich supporters like Bassat say to Wilkie if he stays at St Kilda they will offer him a job when he retires.

He used to work as an accountant, they could offer him a job as an accountant on $2M for a year to make up for the shortfall.

If he was a Geelong player they would be offering him a free farm worth $2m to stay with them but we don't have that luxury.

It might also depends on who we can attract from other clubs.

If trading Marshall helps us get a Flanders or CMac while keeping our first, then it makes sense.

Geelongs first pick would be a mid second rounder in an uncompromised draft. We can't be giving a grand finalist (at minimum) a leg up for a contracted player.

They killed the amateur Dogs in the Macrae (edit, I meant Smith) trade and think they can do it to anyone.

I'd love to know who the player is that we'd be asking for.

Bassat could offer him an accounting job at Seek?

I doubt it would be their first on it's own.

I'd be surprised if we could get a quality player out of Geelong though. More than likely a player as steak knives I reckon.

We really letting Marshall for pick 18 which will be about pick 25?
So pick 25 and what?

Bassat could advertise a $2m accounting job on Seek just to pretend it is an open process but then just give the job to Wilkie.

He might be able to do likewise with Marshall although it might look a bit too suspicious trying to pretend Roma is an accountant.
