2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

See, now I don't get that..........why would you be sad?
plenty of such misery gutses, they call them grunters, mostly brits, the type that grunt begrudgingly at good service and moan and complain if the slightest thing isnt to their liking

but its a different kind of sad, theres sadness coming from being homeless with no money sleeping in a shop entrance on flinders street in 3 degrees & theres sadness/grumpiness coming from staring at 20 year old hard bodies sipping on ice cold beer in 26 degree evenings/nights & collecting their pensions from a country they havent set foot in for 20 years

Flanders would be crazy to go to the Dees. He’s just as much guaranteed a game for us as he is for them and they are on the edge of a cliff list wise whilst we are maybe in the edge of something exciting. Maybe Petracca going frees them up to offer crazy money but that would be very silly of them.
I think we are underestimating our midfield options. Yes, Flanders would be best 22 but he'd be top 2 or 3 at Melbourne without a challenge. And with his relationship with Steven King, there is a compelling reason why he might want to play for them.

Whoever it was went absolutely full nuff. 🙄
west coast guy just came on and agreed with everything he said,i guess 12th every year is the envy of some, screw that, take a swing at top 8 and a flag and if it fails in a screaming heap we cop it

I don't think we would trade Freijah. Sanders I think we would be open to moving in.
Now, surely you can see why this entire approach is absolutely amateur by the western bulldogs?

And because I know stupid pugs are lurking. Not a single saints fan has an issue with you targeting Wilkie or the cats and Marshall.

The issue is as simple as. You are desperate for Wilkie an absolute superstar defender and you only want to give up magic beans - which everyone knows won’t get it done.

So wtf are you actually doing?

Richards has to be on the table if the Dogs are serious about enticing St Kilda to let a contracted Wilkie go. An extra okay midfielder and draft picks do not come close to replacing the influence that Wilkie has. We already have a solid lineup of promising young mids who should have good careers, but we still need an extra bonafide gun, and Richards is the one who fits the bill.

Otherwise, we'll keep our star defender thanks.

tend to agree. my brother is a rabid Dogs supporter and would do Sanders + 10 + F1 for Wilkie but won't even entertain a straight swap for Freijah. they do not belong in the same conversation. I watch them most weeks as my wife is also a Dogs supporter... Freijah is comfortably the best 19yo in the comp IMO, meanwhile Sanders just got dropped for the most important game of the year

ultimately I think we will hold out for Freijah and it all ends in a stalemate and everyone stays put. but I think he is the only one who could get us to budge on Wilkie (apart from the obvious Bont/Richards/Darcy who are 100% off the table). I can't see Sanders and picks getting it done

Making their List Manager look like a fool, who will be the one who cops the critiscm when it goes teats up. The instigator of this is teflon at that club.

I’m not saying the pressure is off.

We haven’t knocked it on the head because ultimately Wilkie probably wants this.

Let’s be real here, Bont Darcy and Richards are all off the table.

What potentially gets this deal done if you are SOS & Ross?

I can’t think of a better deal than Freojah and pick 10 - which the dogs will not do
It's all about the BATNA. There is no way we do a trade which is any respect "good enough" or "can't think of a better deal".

Aaron from Trade radio if you are reading this you are a massive campaigner and know sweet FA about salary cap, drafting strategy or anything you were talking about. Misinformed garbage is all you had coming out of your mouth as it was frothing from the sides. “ I would prefer a 10 year rebuild” What an idiotic statement 🙄

The issue with the "we must win the trade" argument with the Doggies is it removes the incentive for them to even make a trade. What they take away must not outweigh what Wilkie will bring.
That's kinda the point isn't it?

Remove the incentive of them chasing our next captain, BnF runner up and one of our "untouchables". If they wanna throw big offers to guys with 2 years left on probably a front-ended contract, don't come offering junk picks, you have to give something up to get something back.

Come back in 2 years when he's a RFA - and we'll match your offer and still make you trade for him.

Freijah has had a few outstanding games like Wilson but he's no certainty to be an A grade player still. He probably keeps a similar level Saint like Garcia, Boxshall or Wilson out of the side while develops. He's been fantastic but his greatest claim to fame is that he's outstanding for a guy taken in the third round.

10 is going to be developing player in a shit draft or capital for Flanders. To me it's unlikely to get more than GOP in this draft. We'd go into next year with a very ordinary set of tall backs.
I disagree regarding Freijah. The kid is going to be a star. Just my opinion of course, and an opinion is neither right nor wrong.

But I suspect Freijah is very highly rated by our club. IMO he would have to be central to any hypothetical deal involving Wilkie.

The question would be what else would the Bulldogs have to add to get a deal done.

Pick 10 isn’t anywhere near enough. It would have to be another young gun under the age of 24. Plug in and play. And that would involve the Bulldogs eating a very distasteful sandwich.

The Bulldogs have valued Wilkie and that value proves they need to pay a high price. They will know that.

FWIW, I doubt Wilkie leaves. But it’s worth having the discussion.

The high irony is that Bulldog supporters have listed their 'untouchables' but then want us to trade an untouchable of ours for shit.
Their delusion is massive. They are not a serious football club.

it’s understandable from the Bulldogs, Wilkie is probably the player they need most to win a flag next year. They got word of some possible dissension and got in his ear. All good, we’ve been doing it for years.
But, clearly they know he’s contracted and they can see we’re not actually interested in draft picks at the moment, we’re gunning for players. Even if we were, they can only trade picks from this season and next which aren’t good enough picks.
So whats their offer?
Have they spoken with any of their players about moving over? Other teams?
Unless they get real creative with multiple teams the only possible trades that make sense for St.Kilda and the Bulldogs are;

  • straight swap for Richards
  • Freijah + Sanders

I loved Aaron’s passion. He sounded sincere.

But he was talking shit. He didn’t understand the intricacies of using the salary cap as a recruiting weapon and how accommodating it can be to a well crafted long term strategy.

As for his remark that he would prefer to rebuild for 10 years via the draft, it was just an awful take.

Then you aren’t serious in wanting one of the best defenders in the league
That's fine. Kid's in his 2nd year, hasn't even turned 20 yet, and already has 4 BOG performances. Has a chance to be one of the premier mids in the game. You don't trade that level of talent for a 29 year old. If that's classified as unserious, then I think we will learn to live with that.
