2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

His history of mental health problems? Is that just the modern euphemism for getting on the gear and absolving oneself of personal responsibility for one's actions, or has he had actual problems?

Possibly, but generally individuals that go down those pathways have had some pretty messed up emotions and relationships before hand.

We have good friends who have struggled with a daughter with alcohol/drug addiction basically since she was 14, she is now 22. She was a beautiful young girl, a wonderful kid, high achiever at school until she was drugged and pack r*ped at a school party. She didnt tell her parents until years later and in the interim she began self harming, drinking and then drug dependancy.

It doesnt excuse what they become, but there is nearly always a dark story behind these kids substance abuse issues. We dont know what Oliver, Ugle-Hagan or others have had go on their lives but there is generally a cause somewhere.

Post clearance midfielder is the role we have sold Flanders on according to Sam Edmund
Stav, without me appearing to be a dolt, could you please explain that further.

What exactly is a post clearance midfielder?

Is it just after a centre clearance or does it include stoppages around the group?

Where would his starting position be when he’s not rolling through the midfield?

the problem i have with the northern acadamies is that the reasons for implementing them are no longer valid

the big reason for their implementation was a lack of home grown talent. they cited particpiation numbers as an example why.

but after a heavy push into the northern markets and the establishment of two new AFL clubs the participation numbers have sky rocketed.

the QLD participation numbers are now higher than than SA and Tasmania combined. off the back of that we've seen a club like southport (heavy linked to GC) participate in the VFL grand final. which shows the talent is coming through from the bottom up. we've seen the elite talent start to pour into the draft.

i agree with Riewoldts argument that QLD are now producing elite talent on par with traditional football states. for example theres more high level elite talent coming from QLD than there is WA IMO

people might disagree with this but the reality is the clubs in the non traditional markets of QLD and NSW and now producing outcomes far beyond the traditional football states of WA and SA. so they need to be returned back to the fold and seen as just a normal football state now where they produce talent just like WA and SA.

here's the big kicker though which has shown the huge swing. of the last 10 grand finals only 4 didnt involve a northern market club. QLD and NSW have produced 2 premiers from 6 grand grand finals. total grand finals is 7. in contrast WA and SA combined have only participated in two grand finals for 1 premiership.

yet we arent sitting here demanding all SA talent go to the crows/port and all WA talent goes to Freo/WCE.

it needs to be called out for it is. glorified match fixing. theyre trying to make sure the four northern markets are continually playing finals so that the attendance rates increase and threaten the NRL. that's it.
The one that is not kicking goals is the actual western Sydney market. I don’t think GWS have produced a lot of academy draftees from traditional western suburbs of Sydney. A difficult market to crack. I could be wrong here though.

A "post clearance midfielder" is an AFL player who is effective at retrieving the ball from stoppages and then using it effectively in the transition game. Unlike purely "inside" midfielders who dominate clearances but may struggle to link play, a post-clearance midfielder possesses a strong combination of contested ball-winning ability and the skill to launch attacks, contributing to both their team's defensive and offensive structure. Players like Matt Rowell, Caleb Serong, and Finn Callaghan are examples of modern midfielders who excel in this role.

In simple terms its just a transition mid

Is more the link between defence/midfield than a first-possession mid

So his uncontested/contested possession ratio will be higher than a Garcia/Steele/Macrae

Think of the midfielder who gets on the end of the first possession out of a clearance and gets the play going.

He will play midfield, that includes centre square time. But it might be that he starts off a wing or half forward flank etc.

Ultimately it’s the mid whose job is to get ball in hand and get us rolling between the lines.

I’m trying to think of a stkilda example under Ross for you and whilst not a perfect fit. Probably 09/10 Dal Santo but less damaging by foot.

If it works out well. It should be a 25 disposal in his sleep kinda player. Not necessarily high meters gained. His job is going to be to knit our play together - so that we can get Nas or Pou or Hall ball in hand higher up the ground

Thanks Stav. Great explanation.
