2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

No, things just change. He said it a month ago.
Not sure if I said it at the time (but I certainly thought it), that the narrative coming from Tony74 and Ross publicly was that they weee saying everything you’d expect the club to say. By doing that, we are where we are today in that Geelong are willing to give us their 1st round pick. Played cards perfect

I would only be willing to see Ro leave if we knew we were getting a good player in as part of an on trade or from Geelong.

If we can get a decent pick from Geelong to somehow sneak Humphrey, CMac or a player directly from Geelong (SDK, Close) then could live with it

I've always said that Ro can go as long as we get a sweet ass deal in return and we are comfortable with our ruck situation. Hopefully a future 1st at a minimum.

You'd think we have a plan with that Ro pick.

The same half glass empty posters that are criticising the club for trading pick 7 for Flanders are the same that keep piling on the decision to draft Travaglia at pick 8.

Can’t please everyone.

Not me, I'm stoked with Flanders. The fact that we used pick 8 on Travaglia reaffirms the Flanders trade even more.

P7 - pretty worthless in this draft and great move flicking it on for Flanders.

P19 (so far) - (+ maybe something else if we’re nice) definitely worth Roma we’d be so lucky if we could convince the almighty Mackie to give up their ‘first’ for our contracted gun.

Do I have that right?
Yep.

In my opinion we should only be doing this deal if we’re the outright winners of it. If it’s going to be a “fair” trade, we should be keeping our contracted player and not helping the rich get richer.

Sounds like SDK is a pipe dream so aside from that l think a future 1st should be the purchase price.

But wait! Imagine if we could get turn Marshall into Ryan AND Aleer! We’d probably have to give up a bit more though. 🙄

I’d be absolutely thrilled if we up and went home at this point - I fear the good parts are over.

What I hope doesn’t happen from here:
  • Marshall traded for unders for no reason
  • Over pay for Ryan and Aleer
  • Trade Steele to essendon

Best outcome imo from this point
  • Keep Marshall
  • F2 for Ryan with a late pick coming back
  • Pass on Aleer due to asking price 40+ pick would be ok
  • Keep Steele

I’m with you on this one, I do think we can probably get Aleer for a price we’d be happy with if we let things play out a bit but I guess time will tell.

Bottom line, keep Marshall. **** Geelong.

I agree with you on one point.

This Flanders deal makes sense in the context of St Kilda's "win-now" and "throw the kitchen sink at 2026 and 2027" strategy.

I just think, sadly, it'll end up being another sugar hit ala 2020. I'd prefer we keep using the various drafts- which have netted us Nas, Windy, Owens, Tauru, Phillipou, Hall and others. That's the best mechanism for a small club over the long-term.

Lets not take the risk with this green light. Lets sit here parked at the lights, for another green light that we know will come again and we can definitely catch it. No risk, no reward. The club outlined that they would go to the draft and bring in talented kids, which they have done. They said that after this they would be all in on bringing in experience.

The twist is that with the talented operators we now have at the club, they have been bankrolling monies instead of overpaying under performers and recently drafted kids. We now have a war chest and I am loving that we are shaking up the league and giving the message to all clubs, "we have money and we are coming shopping for your best."

It's an F1 Geelong, take it or dont.
Anything less & we're gifting them
Gubby states, we're doing what's best for the Saints
Gotta prove it now.

On Steele, he turns up to his exit meeting & says hey guys im going to relinquish the captaincy.
Called back later & told, by the way look around for other opportunities.
I personally dont like that shite.
Could of told him that at the exit meeting.
Respect isnt a thing anymore.

Off topic but we traded one of those picks for an unknown Tom Hickey when we could have just saved it and drafted Grundy. That was a garbage decision at the time even without the benefit of hindsight and it's only gotten worse with time.

Grundy was literally the only thing to come out of that draft between our original pick, and the pick we ended up with. No way we would have cherry picked him with the crack squad of recruiters we had at the time. Trout would have found a way to mess up the 2001 draft : ( Hmmm, Ball, Judd, Hodge.....i reckon that Polak guy is a good kid who makes his bed and hugs his mum ).

Who cares Grundy would not have got us the holy grail, nor would we have TDK or The god in Dodson.

I'm happy if Steele stays. Often players of his calibre have a golden year when their body comes good. Hard as nails. 24th - 25th on the list, heavily front loaded. Plenty to like about him sticking with us.

Exactly. I've switched my thinking on Steele - prefer to keep rather than give away for bugger all in return. Like the fact he wants to stay too. Think with the Captaincy off his shoulders and free from the spotlight so to speak, he's released just to work on his game and nothing else and we might possibly see a renewed JS next season.

Sure is a lot of people arguing with some posts I can't see...

Think we sit back and watch the carnage unfold for a couple days. Get Aleer, Ryan and JDG late Tuesday.

Grab popcorn for Wednesday to see Trac/Oliver/Merrett shit show go down.
yep just used the iggy tab for first time myself, same guy im willing to bet,its depressing enough at times following the saints without that bagging evey move the club makes crap,so gliding through every reply to him as well now(is there a way to ignore every reply to an ignored poster?),should make those 15 pages(up to 40 in the naz days)behind days a bit easier

Byrnes would be stiff to miss out given how much he played this year.

Schoenmaker would have the most upside imo, that boot can break teams open. Jones is 31 when the season starts and must be behind too many now.

Internally who knows what they think.
if jones is retained,to steal a phrase"we are not a serious club"

Expect Steele to stay unless he can get to a team that gives him a chance to contend. GWS & Collingwood are a watch over the next week.

Ro could happen as early as today I reckon. Clubs seem actively engaged in negotiations and if Cats want a live chance at Curnow they’ll need to move on to that ASAP.

Clubs are starting to reach out to Steele now.

I’m going to guess that if he goes someone else is coming in.

Yeah that’s my expectation too. Personally torn on seeing him go as I’d love to see him play a season without the burden of leadership but he’s likely not on our list by 2028.
