2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

Wait, I have an idea.

Marshall, F3 for F1 & F2

Geelongs F2 for Leek & F2.

That way GWS get their F2 that they were after. Happy days.

Feel sorry for Aleer though.

Not a good look on the club either. Once you get a player to nominate you you should get the deal done unless it's unrealistic. Obviously if Giants weren't going to budge on a future 2nd then thats fair enough. But if were just pulling out cos we now don't need him then thats not a good look.

I have a bad feeling now about Steven May, just as I have had the whole time about Mason Cox.

Fellas, they can get all this done in 1 week.

Aleer, Marshall, Steele etc.

It’s like bold and the beautiful up until the last 48 hours.
Totally agree with that. I just quite like that there is a bit of hard ball negotiation being played out in public!

But, yeah, a three day trade period would be much better.

I think this is part of the process, but had similar thoughts. Walk him to PSD as somebody else pointed out.

No...we've commited to those 2 so that has to be honored
I would have thought so... but apparently not. not a great look. I wasn't keen on Aleer but I do feel sorry for him. fingers crossed he finds a nice landing spot or we have made GWS improve their offer at the very least

on the previous list spot discussion, that's effectively one more spot available - so maybe we are actually serious about retaining Marshall and not just posturing. no real need to move him on now provided we can shift one of Butler or Steele. ball is back in Geelong's court. can always revisit Aleer if the Cats pay up

They want a future 2nd

That's ridiculous

**** off

We're offering to pay him circa 700k x4.
That's not chump change (despite the recent 25% salary cap increase)... so clearly we don't think he's steaknives.

F2 isn't all that far off the mark if we are ok with spending an F3.

But I don't think the trade pricetag is the issue at all.

I think we have been looking for a way to worm out of signing him since the day we landed jsos.
We've been into aleer for ages- and jsos landed in our lap late.

We've got the cap space for both, but with jsos in- aleer has gone from 'essential' to 'nice to have'.

We don't need to spend 700k a year on 'nice to have'.
Especially when we have the flying viking to play in his exact same spot on 100k.

Us baulking at gws asking for F2 is just us trying to make them the scapegoat.

FYI- Aleer will be fine, he's had plenty of other clubs interested.
Sure, he probably wont get the 700k x 4 we promised him, but he'll be fine.

Pretty poor tbh if we had made the commitment to him.

Our name will be mud with his management group.

Feel a bit sorry for the long onion.
Depends what the back story is.

If Giants were pushing for anything more that a third rounder then in makes sense to walk away.

If the decision was because we realise he's not a need after signing Silvagni then it should have been dealt with weeks ago.

In the end, the right decision was made, but could end up looking pretty bad if it was the latter.

Cuts both ways though, the guy couldn't get a game until this year when he decided to leave, they then pump some games into him with other players injured and ask for too much come end of season. Bit cheeky. Paid 7 for a contracted Flanders, we're not averse to paying when required.
