2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th

Cats don’t seem to have an overloaded midfield and they wouldn’t trade blue chips like Holmes, so who would they be prepared to offer that would be of interest to us?
Probably someone with a headband and dodgy haircut, which is about 85% of their list.

The thing is though & I've said it before. He only has to pinch hit in the ruck, kinda worked with Ryder.
And he is cover for King.
Who cares if he's a good fit for Geelong, he's contracted, so we can hold.
Only reason to offload him is if we get an elite mid. from them.
Don't need SDK now.
Could get him though, when he's out of contract?
SDK signed an extension earlier this year which takes him until the end of 2027.

If Tony is right, and he always seems to be, then it makes Geelong’s prospective trade for Marshall even more interesting.

Wilkie staying means the backline no longer needs shoring up. So presumably the club (who seem to be interested in trading players rather than picks) will be identifying another area of need.

Potentially stengle and their first rounder?

My guess would be more like we see it as an opportunity to use his trade capital on a player like Flanders and push his wages into something more immediately productive.
What would be 'immediately productive' is you are giving Geelong fc exactly what they need.
And not everyone agrees with you on Flanders
We need a proven elite mid.
Not someone who played mid. for 1 year.

Because as good as Geelong is, the ruck is an urgent area of need for them.

Marshall will make them even better and they are in the window to win Flags.

I heard on SEN someone saying that Scott will be meeting Marshall again shortly after their final game.
I guess if they lose the GF and get dominated by Cameron or Mcinerney it will help bump up the trade value.
Hard to think of any players that they’d give up though, then you have to ask that player to love as well.
Their first this year and next will do me.

Why?

Different players. Different roles.

Cover Wilkie’s loss in a separate trade and morph an unrelated area of weakness into a strength.

Marshall is being usurped in the ruck by TDK. Other options are there as back up. Marshall is a fabulous player but he isn’t irreplaceable.

The other point that most of us have overlooked is recent media reporting that senior players have been unhappy with some of the salaries paid to incoming players.

That stuff isn’t coming from the club, so it’s coming from somewhere else. And that is understandably annoying for the club.

Maybe the time is right for generational change. Bring in younger replacements who will re-align the list profile while removing the barnacles of some who may be discontented.

As supporters we focus on what we lose in trades, sometimes involving players we are emotionally invested in. We don’t always focus on what we bring in and how that turbo charges our prospects over many years.

What the club is doing now is ballsy and strategic. Calculated and unemotional. It is about the next 5-10 years and not the next 2.

I’m wrapped they are having a crack.
Before tony74 posted re Wilkie, my personal opinion would be to potentially lose 3 senior players wouldn’t be ideal.

But new info, nothing to worry about!

CMAC or whoever. Just don't think the club are as attached to keeping him as the fans are. We probably don't even need elite. Just a quality rotation even would be nice.

I think realistically we need to develop our own elite talent because they rarely come up and don't come to sides outside the 8. Our biggest lift next year will come from King and internal growth from kids already listed. The ring ins will fill holes and fatten out depth but we need to hope a lot of already listed players step up.

I’d be asking for Mires or Close and a future 1st.

But we are getting Flyin Ryan

It will be interesting to see how we use him. I think we could see him play as a the second high half forward to double Hall. Still leaves a spot for small goal sneak pressure forward. Hopefully Collard steps up.

That’s fine. Sdk, Connor O’Sullivan or Ollie Dempsey will have to be involved or they can get stuffed. Still remember when they bent us over for a contract 4 time bnf champion in Jack Steven’s

They are a team of even talent apart from a handful of elite untouchables. It would be hard to work out who to chase. Realistically I think best case would be picks that we could use in trades. Maybe Clohesy or Stevens would be available but not sure they are what we want anyway. Retschko looks okay in the VFL.

I do like Brad Close, a real team orientated type.
Doesn't get alot of possessions, but his handballs in particular, set up team-mates.
Hasn't got much depth to his kicking though.
Really good in his role. He's elite in score involvements and goal assists. and very good in his pressure acts. I think a player we actually need. Mires has transitioned into their midfield and shown great signs in there. I doubt they'd agree to it. Close though would be a possibility as well as a FFRP. I'd do that deal pretty quickly.

Callum will be at Moorabbin next year

The reason contracts are worth next to nothing is because clubs don't hold players to them.

As I said, if the club tweaks his deal, it's generous, and should be met with gratitude and respect.

Again, nobody forced him into his current deal.

I don't care what the dogs are offering him. On principle, it doesn't change what I've said above.
As I’ve posted previously
- many clubs are being held to ransom by their players like this.
They almost need to get together to discuss how they go about get some of the power back from the players, and to all act together.
Doubt it’ll happen though.

Tony's posts read like he's holding a gun to said player's head and making them repeat the line back in third person

"callum wilkie will be at moorabbin next year" gulp
