2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Wake up to a further 6 pages here. What a roller coaster. I don’t know what to think now. Only I pretty much know that we’ll come out this ok. Some hard nosed thinkers these days at the club.

If the underlying aim is to set up for the next 5-10 years and beyond then that is where our speculation should lie. Don’t think it is for the next couple of years, although we do want to be pushing into finals.

Of all the possible Geelong players that we might target I seem to remember Clohesy’s name coming up as a promising type. But haven’t seen his name lately. And there was another young mid. Stevens? You know these guys will have been developed well. SDK would also be palatable.

Not advocating it. But guys like this fall into a longer term strategy.

They are a team of even talent apart from a handful of elite untouchables. It would be hard to work out who to chase. Realistically I think best case would be picks that we could use in trades. Maybe Clohesy or Stevens would be available but not sure they are what we want anyway. Retschko looks okay in the VFL.
Ha! You beat me to it. The very names I was writing at the same time.

Both those sides have less than stacked midfields. Adelaide too. Smith is an outside runner who can win clearance as well. Danger is just an absolute wrecking ball and then a lot of role players who can all be guns on their day.

Hawks have one absolute gun in Newcombe who again can run all day and win clearance then their next best was 2 meter tall Nash. Hawks again ave a spread of talent like Day and Weddle who can play elite footy at times.

We need one elite mid that can run and if that's Nas we have it. Garcia looks like a combo of run and contested clearance work so fit that modern prototype.

Windhager looks like his brand would fit well in finals. He can play close in chaos footy and work under pressure and pace.

These days getting it out into space is the key and guys who can run and spread is everything now. Good kicking and contested skills stand up in finals and home and away too. Being a quick thinker is even more important in finals.

We probably need another ready made mid regardless for rotations but he doesn't need to be elite, just good enough. Maybe Dow finally comes good.
I think the combo of Danger, Smith and Holmes is elite. We have one at that level.

Geez, you'd give your left nut to get SDK onto our list. Theres your tall 200cm defender, back up ruck, age profile, everything we've been asking for if Marshall leaves.

Find a way to walk away from the Aleer deal, SDK for Marshall and get Flanders as our midfielder we need to add.

JSOS, SDK, TDK, Ned, Ryan.

Add those 5 with natural improvement from our kids, we are a top 4 side.

Grabbing Clohesy would be very handy. He's on the verge of a breakout season I reckon, just needs a good run of games. Stevens looks a bit one-dimensional to me. The sort of guy who would've been a gun 30 years ago but isn't the right kind of mid for modern footy.

Im living in the states and have no idea what’s been happening this finals series except that crows are out. I have a weekend of solitude with kids out of the house. Whats the best game of the finals to watch (no spoilers pls). This trade thread is all I’ve been consuming cause I’m a sad sad person

Danger played an elite game last night but he's not regularly that guy any more. Holmes is an excellent player but probably not quite elite, definitely A grade though. Athletically there aren't many better though. Smith is genuinely a star now, he was already a gun at the Dogs but he's doing it for full seasons now.

Yeah, those old school inside extractors are hard to carry more than one of in a side now.

1.5 million over 5 years is the offer, that is head turning for anyone.
You again frame something as an unmitigated disaster and say we expect Bont, Richards and Darcy.
You really need to settle down and stop wetting the bed all the time, you sound a bit hysterical.
For the hundredth time, the Dogs instigated this on a contracted player, the Saints wont deal unless it is in our interest.
Bulldogs wont even trade one decent player according to their ITK's, so the trade wont go ahead.
You need to compose yourself and stop with accusations and silly emotional hyperbole.
Just relax.
Nah. SOS should be sacked. Wasted all that time re-signing out of contract players when he should have been re-signing contracted players. I’m cancelling my membership. Again!

The issue has nothing to do with us giving him an extension and a bump.

The dogs have a double your salary offer until he is 35 on the table apparently. So $1.5m a season for the next 5.

He will be made captain and bumped to
$1-1.1m ish.

The issue is that it’s $2mish on the table that he would be walking away from.
Looks like Wilkie is gone then. at 29, no way he would walk away from an extra $2M. And we probably wouldn't match the $1.5M a season deal. It's unfortunate, but this is part of the AFL landscape now, we'd better get used to it.

That’s fine. Sdk, Connor O’Sullivan or Ollie Dempsey will have to be involved or they can get stuffed. Still remember when they bent us over for a contract 4 time bnf champion in Jack Steven’s
Turned out to be fair value. The Stevens that Geelong got was not the same player that won those bnf and he was out of contract.

Apparently, Saints had the chance to trade him out previously and this would have netted decent compensation but Richo said No.

Stevens played nine matches for Geelong before retiring.

Yeah but at the time of the trade he wasn’t like that. You can say it was fair in hindsight but at the time we got fleeced

Didn't need to type sad twice. Once was enough

Wilkie is contracted. If contract means nothing, then every contracted player who's played well for a few games is going to ask their agent to field offers from rival clubs. The good thing is we don't have to do anything, Wilkie is our play for another 2 years unlike Nas' situation. We can offer him an extention with a raise, but no need to match Bulldogs $1.5M. Bulldogs has only got the easy part done, satisfy the player with more money, they would need to satisfy the club in a trade that we can't say no to. I would say we played perfectly.

We know the older brigade from the Richo/Ratten days are very comfortable and not setting the standards we need to excel as a club, instead it's the likes of Winhager, Philipou, Owens that are pushing the group. Where have you heard that before in any professional club. Basically if Steele, Wilkie and Marshall goes, it's a changing of guard and passing the keys to the young leaders, whether it's planned or by luck, I'm all for it. We've been mediocre for way too long, need to be bold and compete at the highest level for a change.

A bit like TDK, can't blame him. Unlike TDK he is a contracted player so lets look at trade value

The player - Wilkie is AA and should have been at least in the squad this season. Durable and has not missed a game in 4 years, plays 100% game time and could play at this level to 35

Now the extra value
1.The Bulldogs are absolutely desperate for this type of defender, hence the ridiculous offer that will cost huge SC and lots and lots of capital
2. Wilkie is an integral part of the Saints strategy. the Bulldogs are wanting us to take a step back in our efforts to a) make finals, b) keep players like NAZ at end of 2027.
3. Saints have front loaded his current contract. This means his value is more (in Saints eyes, Bulldogs would argue bad luck, but Saints do have the whip hand)so value is higher
4. Has a contract for the next two years, will be the next captain, and his contract will get extended as Stav says.
5. This was instigated by the Bulldogs so they have to pay up.

For Wilkie it is certainly tempting, he will be 32 at next contract, and will never get this type of offer again.

The Saints have constantly said they want to be a serious club, they will get very substantial overs or the deal wont occur.

As St Neil posted, lets see if the Bulldogs are a serious club if he nom's the Bulldogs which is not a foregone conclusion.
Agree. We have all the power, Wilkie can wave his $1.5M a season good bye if Bulldgos don't come up with a godfather deal for us. Bulldogs were look like complete fools the 2nd time (after losing out of JSOS).

I haven't given up on Dow and Carrol. Dow at his best is a contested ball winning beast that can waive in and out of traffic with ease. Carrol is a lovely kick and built for the modern game. hope we really give them the chance in the VFL and hope they both up their game to make the midfield competition fierce internally.
