2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

My God JJ is correct. Saints in two consecutive seasons have won a number of games in the back end when the season was shot.
Don't agree that we should win only 12 games. We need to make the eight. Then in 27 really go up the charts.
I didn’t know he could count to be completely honest

Essendon is unstable right to its core. There's this weird element in the club from the sheedy crew. Almost cult like to the point hird returning is fantasised like its a prophecy.

There's absolutely no guarantee that Walsh is there in 5 years. The club has a strong sense of entitlement and lots of in fighting and politics.

Its so ****ed an email had to do the rounds to back Walsh in where they described him as a product of their work. Their being the crew under sheedy.

Flanders would he absolutely nuts to go there. The asada hird stuff absolutely broke that club.
They are the Sheedy Football Club. Richmond cut the effective ties between the operations of the club and the coteries and won three flags. Essendon and Carlton have not done the same.

Ross spoke about Brisbanes toughness at the B&F and that's what we need to develop.
Steele and Marshall would be up there on our list of toughest players. Im not talking brute physicality I'm talking about guys who don't give up. Steele has been carrying injuries yet still top 5 in the league for tackle count. Both are must keep.

I really liked hearing JSOS in that interview especially how much he talked up RTB as a coach. Sounds like he already has a good connection via a number of avenues with the club.
Feels like a father son recruit

Both are gone mate. We are moving on from them.

Steele is a great tackler but you can't carry a full time mid who averages 20 touches just because he lays tackles.

Marshall is a good footballer but we have just paid 1.7m for someone to take his spot and have a quality young ruck coming through. It just makes sense to get something decent for Marshall if we can.

Plenty of other young tough players that can come through and take their spots.

List of mids who played at least 15 games in 2025 and averaged between 20 and 21 disposals per game:

Jack Steele
Jack Crisp
Josh Ward
James Worpel
Liam Duggan
Travis Boak
Jason Horne-Francis

I think the club has a right to make it's stance on where they see Steele going forward known in his exit interview, no problems there, but also Steele has earnt the right to make his own call.

1: He's contracted, if the club "pushes" him out, I'll be very disappointed and think it would be very fitting we dropped the "Fortius Quo Fidelius" sash in our logo in the same year we pushed out a contracted club captain.

2: He shouldered a huge burden through a patch when this club was devoid of leadership. Geary probably similar to Steele this year, borderline best 22 at times but provided a hard edge and work rate that this club needed with youth coming through.

3. He deserves a chance to get his body right and work on a new role after being played through some injuries for the club. 2 years ago broke his collarbone and continued to play out the game (?!) and then was rushed to return because of his importance to the team... He also had a shoulder injury the year before that that hampered him. If we had any kind of midfield depth I doubt he would have been played in a fair few of those games.

4. He has the runs on the board in the past for adaptability, character to take on challenges and toughness that I think is still crucial at the pointy end of the season for finals and could play a part time forward/mid role.

I honestly reckon he's shouldered a similar level of burden and individual significance to a Patrick Cripps or Zach Merrett. I can remember in his first couple of years at the club us playing Sydney was always a brutal one. Parker and Buddy would always physically bully our young mids and lacklustre defence. And the first time we were competitive Steele was a big part of that. He manhandled Buddy who tried to fend him and just generally did not get flustered or overwhelmed. Changed the attitude of the playing group around 2020 I reckon and how the club was probably perceived by other teams.

Regularly played a crucial defensive stoppage mid role in his earlier years for it. Knows his way around goals. Can take a strong contested mark and played as a forward for GWS in his 2nd year. Reckon he deserves a chance.
