2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th

Can't wait for tomorrow. It's arguably the most jam packed trade period we've ever had.

I mean, 80% of the trades won't get done until the last 3 hours of deadline day but that won't stop me from listening to 8 hours of trade radio every day. No doubt I'll suffer a brain injury from that but its a risk I'm willing to take.

This next week and a half is gonna hit like crack. Season starts tomorrow fellas.

Jack Steele is adamant he will not explore any trade options unless a club comes to him after being told by the Saints to look elsewhere.

The St Kilda midfielder, who has stepped down as captain, met with the club on Friday, when the Saints told him he can assess trade options. He has two years to run on his contract and wants to stay at St Kilda. – Callum Twomey

Doesn’t sound like a guy who feels like he’s been booted to me.

Doesn’t sound like a guy who feels like he’s been booted to me.

He's not been booted out of the club.

But IS being booted out of our full time midfield- and into the vfl presumably if he can't kick regular goals as a part time mid/fwd.

Sounds like a win/win for us and jack that being booted out of our fulltime midfield isn't a big deal for him.

Lots of other players have been booted out of their preferred spot and reacted as if they are being booted out of their club.

Glad to hear jack sees the distinction

His contract was front loaded so we could bring the players, would be on half his contract $$ wise going forward.
It’s still sunk money.

If Roma and Steele are both on the books that’s gotta be a mill or close to it for depth players.

Free it up and one of those spots on a draftee there’s 800k plus available.

I get we don’t “need” the cap space but if we’re still active and pursuing players it’ll help.

Many on here don’t seem to, think we should just take a half chewed scotch finger for him.

I reckon Jack Steele still has some St Kilda AFL in him as forward/mid… but if he winds up playing a lot of VFL in the next two years that means our seniors team is strong, and it has to be great for our new stand alone team too. Love the attitude.

What would you do, trade for maximum value now, or hold for 12 months while not in the window and get a first round compensation pick in 2026?

He’s restricted so they can still match and get full value can’t they?

Not a bad idea at all. Does sound like Hawthorn are looking to bring him in for the very reason

Misson leaving, ok, but Misson leaving and RTB taking on that remit plus his existing duties, strange.

Warming the seat for an experience ex coach is my tip. Hinkley would be amazing. He would have a relationship with Enright also.

Hard to see how we’d get a trade done for Butters though.

Could only see someone like Pou + picks or lots of future picks being used.

Can always dream…

Steele could make a good replacement for Jimmy Webster in the back pocket if his time as a midfielder is over

Where does Jack Steele go? If he is not getting game time in late 2025 at bottom 8 side like Saints. I cannot see him going to a club bellow us for his own ego sake. North have Parker, Adelaide no Carlton Filth Dogs no....
I see the Cats and Filth trend of older player rotating will happen more. I am sure the club could almost guarantee that he and the club could be getting 12 to 15 top games out of both of MacRae and Steele works for me.
With our reserves side now in place we are going to need some old hands to maintain the playing culture and guide the young ones through, rather than going to football Siberia with Sandy.

Steele is the man for that role, selfless team first mentality. Would rather do that with a club respected senior than passed off to play slephing football for a non relevant side for the next two years like happened to Dal.

I think it his decision to make he has earned that right and we should respect his wishes.
