2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

I haven't been this excited for the coming season in years, and hopefully this is the last time I'm excited about trade week.😂

I know some people are worried about trading our pick for Ned, but we are getting someone who has proven his value, compared to an unproven 18 year old.

Out of Jones, Byrnes and Schoenmaker, Arie would be the first one I'd cut.

Slow mid sized player "defender" without a real second position.
Byrnes would be stiff to miss out given how much he played this year.

Schoenmaker would have the most upside imo, that boot can break teams open. Jones is 31 when the season starts and must be behind too many now.

Internally who knows what they think.

And what happens if 2024 ends up being the best season of his career- which St Kilda missed out on, because we're getting him at 24 years old at the end of 2025?

And we're also missing out on drafting an 18-year-old who might become a strong contributor well before the age of 24 (like Nas, Windy, Owens) and may play 15 years for St Kilda?
What if 2025 ends up being the best season of Nas' career. I can't believe I, of all people, am saying this, but can't live it what ifs

Still kinda thinking if Roma goes we should offer Moose a few years. Obviously it'd be on the cheap. If TDK gets injured don't think we can rely on Dodson yet, just doesn't have the tank. He was cooked at the end of the game he played this year
He is very good mates with Mitchito and Windy

Interestingly, if Byrnes is delisted, the only two remaining players on our list from that draft are first rounders Liam Henry and Sam Flanders.

Re Godson.

in terms of projecting as many know I’m an unashamed fan. Throughout the year watching his training and VFL I quickly became comfortable adjusting our entire ruck strategy around him.

I don’t think we as fans quite appreciate what he could be. He was pulling things off in the VFL what take most young ruckman 3/4 years to achieve. He had a couple BOG performances. Even his debut Ik he got subbed but you could see in the half his awareness and coordination was already up to scratch. He picked up the speed immediately. Incredibly rare for a young ruckman.

It has made me comfortable losing Ro even though I’d prefer a Ro x Godson combo than TDK. I think he will force his way in especially if Max is not ready yet.

Byrnes could still get cut just like Bonner the year before who played many games and still got cut. Bonner, Jones, Byrnes, you get the feeling are there to fill a spot while the gun kids mature.

Have we trialled Byrnes as a lockdown back pocket yet? Could replace Webster? His kicking is a bit suspect but he has the fitness and pace to keep up with the Charlie Cameron’s.

Schoenmaker is worth another year even if it’s on the rookie list.

How do we get Fincher done now? Do we trade back in around 30-35? Geelongs R2 might not be enough.
I suspect that we will trade out a player or two before the end of the trade period

?Butler to GC for a pick around #30ish
?Marshall to Geelong for a pick which we might split
?Steele to where ever he wants for as little as makes it possible to get where he wants
?Jones / Schoenmaker / Byrnes gets a bite
?? (I don't want this but) clubs have shown interest in Caminiti

When deciding on a list management decision, it's all about what ifs.

Considering the different possible scenarios and their probabilities.

Fair point, the back thing is a major concern though, surely?

My philosophy is not trading picks. You might recall a decade ago we traded almost the same pick for a guy who ended up retiring early due to back issues.

Time will tell! It could go either way.
Ok, I’ll bite. Not trading picks would mean we’ll have to trade players. Unfortunately Gold coast is only interested in Nas, would you do it?

If not, then we can just stand still and not improve our midfield our weakest line when we have the best opportunity to do so. Guess you’re just happy being mediocre, at least it gives people the reason to keep complaining..

Strange post. I made no mention of Josh Rachele running past him. I can't even remember that but do remember how slow he looked throughout that game and every other time I watched him play. He was like a 6 footy 7 sloth.

There's probably a fair reason why he's just been delisted from a club that is also losing two mature rucks, despite him massing a huge twelve possession game once.

Good luck to him if he does make it into another list but I'm positive Freo fans will have their fingers very tightly crossed they don't have injuries to the two rucks ahead of him.
I'm certain hundreds of other players could run faster than Boyd O'Brien or Darcy - doesn't stop them from playing as a ruck in the AFL.

Boyd was picked up to be a first choice replacement for Marshall if he got injured in 2025 - Marshall didn't get injured so Boyd didn't play.

Job done!!

And by the end of the season, instead of being 2nd in line he was 4th in line.

Byrnes is weak overhead and when he got dragged back by Dempsey it was painful to watch, although Dempsey has done that to a few.

Byrnes is a run all day pretty solid low cost local, he was the dragons captain. That’s the problem they all have something to offer, maybe we could rookie Byrnes or Arie.

Bro, there is less risk in a 24yo that’s been in the AFL system for several years than 18 yo that isn’t fully mentally or physically developed. It’s the most speculative age bracket to gauge elite level talent.
No point trying to to convince someone who’s not listening or don’t want to listen. Just wasting our breathe.. And guess what, he is questioning our every move, you cannot make everyone happy, especially the glass half empty types, there’s always something wrong, they they complain nothing ever changes. Can’t win :)
