I think the uproar was more that Aleer was out of contract with no clear home while Merrett and Marshall both had security behind their moves.

Aleer had a three year contract on the table from the Giants.

Now, the conspiracy theorist in me asks why offer him a 3 year deal when, as it turned out that he was staying they actually immediately reduced the years and money - I believe? I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong.

They knew the Saints were interested and figured if the Saints believed he was good enough to get offered a 3 year contract, that we’d pay up more.

Hey, maybe a ridiculous supposition, but it’s pretty boring around here right now.


Edit: having just now read nikkig98 comment confirming it, it appears I was on the money re contract length.

If Geelong wanted one more shot, they needed a ruckman, they know it, but apparently some know more about it than Geelong because they read out a stat.

Well to use phrasing that pre-dates me, I courted plenty of girls when I was younger, and I can categorically state that I did not close the deal anywhere near 100% of the time...............

I hate LAX.....always fly though Dallas if I can.......

 

[Moral Decay]

One way of looking at Marshal's value is his B&F finishing 3rd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th in the last 4 years. His value isn't in hit outs, it's in his role as a midfielder or as an old fashioned if oversize ruck rover. Which is exactly how Geelong would use him and how we will use him again next year.

A like for like trade from this year's Carji Greaves medal would be looking at Gryan Miers

(6th) and Ollie Dempsey (7th). I'd think the only way a trade could have been done would be as trade for a player or players plus or minus a pick.

A quick look at Geelong's list and needs would be problematic, the hole they have are a matter of depth particularly in the midfield which is exactly what we need, so no chance there. They do have a small excess of defenders and if they had offered SDK who looks to have reached the limit of his talent, he's not a great interceptor and looks like his role is that of a more athletic Dougal.

But and it's a big but, Mackie said there would be no players traded from the very start.


From my perspective we don't need draft picks, we've nailed our colours to the wall, it takes no genius to recognise we're making our charge and players are at a premium, we were never going to accept draft picks because we've already hit the draft for the last 3 years; unless some madness like a top 3 pick was presented. At the very least the same recompense that we would have got as free agent i.e. first round compo. Not Geelong's first round but our first round and given Roma is a contracted player we'd expect to be offered well overs.

Yeh i think we discussed this at the time, we offered a third, if theyd accepted that i really doubt we would have backed out so im not convinced on what youre saying. I have no doubt we were pretty happy to bail when they didnt accept it.

Ultimately i think we probably got the outcome we were after anyway so its all a bit moot.
