2025 List Management Discussion - Part 5

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th

I “get” the Steele trade but it’s hard to argue it doesn’t look ****ing horrendous.

Bloke was our captain 6 weeks ago and now he’s out the door for a pick in the 50s.

Ruthless business and a sweetheart deal for him but it just feels gross

It's ruthless but moving Steele on was 100% the right call. Flanders coming, kids getting better.

Free up 1m in salary, we are bloody lucky to get it off the books IMO.
Yep I was hoping for a F2, but not when it became Melbourne that were into him given they likely finish bottom 6. Who knows what our cap state now is, but it’s a whole lot better now. And if it creates the space for someone next year without losing someone next year, then that’s no small thing

All along we were told we had plenty of cash to throw around. Apparently not. To squeeze out the captain for a pack of twisties just to dump his salary is bullshit.
You understand Steele has to request this move. That Melbourne would have been talking to him prior to today.

Gee the Dees have done well to replace Petracca with Steele AND bring in a bunch of first round picks.

I don't think Trac was performing that much better than Steele the last couple of years. Funny how these trade markets work.

As a plus, it makes it even less likely that we trade Marshall now

Melb have done well.

Got max value for petracca.
Offloaded Oliver
and brought Steele in to protect the young kids while they rebuild

Jack Steele for a future third suggests we must think there are cap issues or might be in the near future.
I dont know about cap issues but NAZ's 2.5 mill extra over two years had to be paid for if we want to retain our kids coming through.

Reality is Steele was great player from 20-22, under Ross he started to decline. The game has moved to transition mids, Jack can’t keep up anymore. For a notoriously bad body language player, imagine what it would’ve been like when he was playing majority VFL all year. What that personality would’ve felt and look like around the club. This was 100% the right call for club and player. Happy for him to get the extra year. All the best to Jack he was a warrior.

7, 8 and the future first.

Makes the Merrett offer look even worse
