2025 List Management Discussion - Part 5

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Steele was never mentioned In those players. It was always Wilkie Marshall Sinclair and those 3 got the 50k bonuses.
Any contracted player would be the discussion. Just cause Steele wasn’t specifically quoted doesn’t mean the quote doesn’t apply.

Again, we’re ruthless til we’re not.

I’ll get over it tomorrow but right now, if we are paying any of his salary (and I doubt we are) that is utter shit

Reality is Steele was great player from 20-22, under Ross he started to decline. The game has moved to transition mids, Jack can’t keep up anymore. For a notoriously bad body language player, imagine what it would’ve been like when he was playing majority VFL all year. What that personality would’ve felt and look like around the club. This was 100% the right call for club and player. Happy for him to get the extra year. All the best to Jack he was a warrior.
Good call. I was also thinking that, not that it was likely to be a problem, but allows the incoming captain to operate completely unencumbered. Fresh start.

You told me a few weeks back that I always underrated our players value when I said Steele was worth a third rounder similar to MacRae

Now are you suggesting it's a good move even though we are also paying his salary?

A month is a long time in footy

100% you do.

but you presented the argument: jack steele is not an AFL quality midfielder anymore. you can't average 20 disposals a game and expect anything decent.

we need him off the books ASAP as it aint getting any better.

its like owning a 4x4. you've been living at the beach in it. you take it in for a service and they tell you the chassis is rusted out. so still owe 30k on. so you go to market and the best offer you can get is 20k. 18k below the going rate for a standard 4x4. do you pass on that deal? or are you smart enough to know the car is cooked and offloading it for 20k and taking the 10k loss is better than a 30k loss when other shit starts going wrong as well like the wiring/electrics.

So we’re absolutely ruthless until we’re not?

Nah, if we are paying any of his wage I ****ing hate the deal.

What was the constant misquote “you don’t trade contracted players unless it benefits your club”
Steele going probably does benefit the club though.
It’s clear they thought we’ve gone past him.
Time to play all the youngsters.
Pou, Garcia, Boxshall, Wilson, Mas, Hall, Windy.
Time for them to step up.

It’s more like we’re paying the mechanic to take it away for us if we’re also paying his ****ing salary.

For all the hype and excitement, trading Marshall and Steele for TDK, Silvagni, Flanders and Ryan doesn't seem to move the needle much for me.

I feel like we are just as dependent on natural progression of our youngsters, but potentially with a bit less money to pay them once they come good.

I have backed the strategy as converting cap space to player assets is good business, but if we lose Marshall for unders, a lot of the good work gets cancelled out.

100% but sometimes throwing shit up in the air is a good way to kick start a momentum surge.
