Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period: Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

They club has already come out and said that we are moving towards the American model of your stars getting paid the most and believe the AFL is heading that way.

I think we are playing it really smart. Front load some massive contracts now to get in high quality players and when the new broadcasting deals come out and the salary cap increases. Our young core will have their big pay days.

We are short one A grade mid. I hope we are all in on the race for Butters signature. Walsh is not the answer.

IMO Marshall is not part of our plans moving forward. I was calling for him to be traded but I was happy to be wrong as i think the club has played this smart. We hold onto him for another year, he is insurance for if king goes down and gives Keeler/dodson another year to improve, he will make us a stronger/competitive team this year which will make us more attractive to some one like Butters looking for a new club. He has been injured this year and will be in better shape going into next seasons trade period.

I feel trading a player in a trade period can have more currency than using a pick you got for them in the previous trade period. I don't believe we are short on cash and Gubbys comments were directed at any one who was considering leaving next year.

Trading Steele and Marshall, along with not bringing in Aleer on top of what we have already leaves enough wiggle room for us to get a big fish.

I could be completely wrong that's how I view the situation due to the club over the past few years being creative to compete.

If we can inject Nas and Hall in to the centre by bringing in Ryan and Flanders to free them both up it probably makes Butters less of a need. We must be running things pretty tight as well.

You'd imagine that Garcia could potentially develop into another Butters as well. We'll know what we need a lot more by the end of next season. To me we still probably need a tall stopper for life after Howard. Could be Caminiti still or even Keeler. Not sure with Barrat yet. He hasn't really stood out.


With Marshall it seems like a lot of clubs are planning on playing a second ruck with the bench changes and he's a true utility tall who can gap fill all over the ground. He's taken match saving marks and kicked match winning goals for years.

He's just had his worst season since he became a regular but he's been close enough to an A grade player for a lot of his career. If it works out it could be an absolute stroke of genius or a waste to have not cashed in a cow that's milk has run dry.

Philipou is the one I am hoping, based on class & potential, that A grade mid we're looking for.

Just needs a clear run at it injury-wise. Flanders should give the younger guys the cover to develop.

A bird in the hand and all that but Butters and Lenny Hayes were just players until they weren't and plenty of others too. Hugo looks fit and focussed. The difference between a champion and a GOP is usually in application and attitude more than a massive talent gulf. We can assess him at the end of 2026.

Only time will tell I guess. I'm bullish on him. I reckon he could easily be an A grade inside mid. It took Zac about 5 seasons to become a consistent A grade mid. Garcia is 26 games in and 7 would have been as a sub. He's just finished his second season and he managed to get fed 17 games. One less than Wilson who is a bluechip kid.

They don't usually give games in the midfield to kids unless they project pretty high. Look at guys like Jack Bytel who could rack up stats but couldn't get a run on ball in a very ordinary midfield. We just let Steele go too and I'm imagining that is because they see Hugo pushing him out.

Butters v Garcia comparison - 2nd year

Both played 17 games in their 2nd year

Butters (2020) - 129K / 119H / 248D / 55M / 47T / 11G 6B / 36 I50s / 23CL / 15GA

Garcia (2025) - 145K / 121H / 266D / 28M / 93T / 4G 7B / 48 I50s / 66CL / 4GA

Butters ramped it up in his 4th season and took another step in his 5th season

Port finished top of ladder (1st) in 2020

We finished 12th in 2025

Yes 2020 season had shortened quarters ... but ... Butters TOG was above 75% every game .... only 3 were below 80% ..... whereas Garcia only had 9 games in 2025 above 75% TOG and only 3 above 80%

While Butters is ahead in some aspects he did play in a very good Port side (in 2020) with a very good midfield / forwardline

Whether Garcia can take the next step remains to be seen .... but currently he is tracking just fine albeit a bit more defensive minded

I really thin the Flanders pick up will elevate everyone that goes through the midfield. His ability to get clean first hands and release a team mate is first class. Add to the upgrade in foot skills which will help our forward half players. His impact will be well beyond his stat line.

I also think Hall is exceptional at reading the ball off ruck contests. He, Garcia and Nas may be the biggest beneficiaries of the Flanders inclusion.

Maybe they are also misleading because he played in a gun side .... compared to our middling team?
