Also, any chance we can drop Oscar and go after Curnow? To disrespect to Oscar, but Curnow is significantly better he would be the perfect fit for us. The only worry is draft capital, but we have a lot more to work with given Gold Coast are restricted by their academy selections and they won't be able to trade for him at all

Gold Coast could easily trade for Curnow. Much easier for them, than us.

And we’re far more restricted in terms of draft capital than GC. They don’t look to have any top end kids in 2026 or 2027, while we do.

Gold Coast's list manager said recently on an AFL interview that they don't even have enough draft capital for all of their academy selections this year. In fact, they won't even be able to draft all of their academy players, so while their hand is stronger than ours, they absolutely cannot trade for him at all.

Of course they can.

King would head back to a Melbourne club for two first round picks, a current and 2026 pick.

Gold Coast have 3 first round picks this year, 1 in 2026 and 1 in 2027 that are all tradeable. Add two more from a possible Ben King trade, and they’d have 7 first round picks to play with.

Gold Coast don’t have to match on ALL their academy kids, just the first two, as those two fill short term needs, Uwland and Patterson.

They don’t have match all the points in this draft, as they could take a deficit in to next year’s draft.

He kicks them from in front of goals too. And i'm not joking. I legit saw him take a mark in front of the goals 20 out, and he still kicked it around the corner.
I actually rate it. Hes worked out that's 100% his best set shots action and he has great accuracy with it. He also sticks with it despite the ridicule.

I rate it over someone like Charlie Cameron who still doesn't have a proper set shots routine and regularly misses after making it up on the spot.

Consistent goal kicking performance is more important than the "look"

If Allen comes, would he ruck? very injury prone.

if not what is the plan? could only be hippy.

forward line hippy / morris / allen

ruck fort / oscar / draper

As an FYI, King won't be leaving this year because he wants to explore free agency. Likewise, Collingwood are after him and believe they can get him. Why would King give all of that up to leave to Carlton (a team that isn't contending?). And Collingwood absolutely cannot trade for him this year because they barely have enough for their own draft too. The only way Gold Coast gets this done is trading one of their star players, which i'm not sure they will be able to do. I genuinely believe we are in a stronger position given we need a key position forward and our only draft plans are for Annable. I'm sure the club won't go down that route as they're set on Allen, but Curnow is a huge upgrade and it would be such a huge get.

Moneyball
Brownlow Medalist Bucks Trend On Extension
Brisbane superstar Lachie Neale is unlikely to go early on a contract extension and inch towards next season without a contract beyond 2026.
The two-time Brownlow medallist has typically extended early in the past, having signed his last deal in June, 2023, 18 months before he was due to come out of contract.
But the ball magnet has been in no rush to get a step ahead on next year and happy to wait at least until the end of the season before looking forward.

I’m far from enamoured with Oscar Allen but he’s clearly a better choice for us as a free agent than an older and also injury prone Charlie Curnow with 4 years on his contract.

With respect, we're going after Draper (after ACL) and Oscar (who has barely got up this season) and we went after Joe (who was always injured before coming here). It seems like its in Brisbane's MO to go after players who are injury prone. If anything, that just makes him fit our profile even more. Also, Caro highlighted it on agenda setters that Gold Coast absolutely can't get him. They don't have enough points for their academies, they dont have the cap space and they 3 forwards. Then again, I don't think we have the capital as well. But I think if Brisbane wants to win another flag before Fagan leaves, it would be a huge get if we could somehow get him.

He had been our best set shot up to about a month ago then Logan I assume went past him with 2 bags of 5.

Hes better than our smalls

Just lazy fans (not saying i have any confidence when he's having a set shot)
I trust Ah Chee much more at kicking for goal. Whereas if Hippy is kicking from straight in front, 35m out, I'm crossing my fingers he kicks straight.

My point was that if we are going after an injury prone key forward either way, let’s go for the one that doesn’t cost us anything at the trade table.

To put it another way, do you think the difference in the contribution a 29 year old Curnow would provide to us compared to a 26 year old Allen is worth 2 first round picks + whatever we’d have to pay Carlton?

Just doesn’t stack up.

I wonder if a return back to WA is back on the cards for Neale? Young growing family and he did raise the idea back in 2021..
Is there a place for him in Freo's midfield in two years though? There would be in the Eagles midfield but would he want to go there?

Probably not Freo but IF he were to go back home (He considers WA home right?) he would be the Eagles best midfielder, even at age 32.

I’m probably overthinking it as he has already achieved the ultimate dream of a flag, so could be tempted into a longer and bigger contract to help further provide for his young growing family.

I didn’t mention King to Carlton. I did say a Melbourne club. There’s 9 of them. Essendon likely to have a couple of good picks.

I’m aware of Collingwood‘s interest in King.

We potentially don’t have enough picks/points for Annable with our current picks, and you think we’re in a better position to trade for Curnow?

I’m not arguing for or against Curnow. I’m just saying I believe GC are in a stronger position to trade for him.

Suns have 3900+ in points. They can match bids at picks 3 and 4 for their top two academy kids.

Seeing as WC and Richmond will probably hold the first 4 picks in the draft, I believe it’s more likely that any bid for academy kids will come at pick 5 or later.

If either Brisbane or the Suns were to chase Curnow, they’re giving up on the prospect of drafting a few academy kids.

We’re not getting Annable if we’re trading our 2025, 2026 and 2027 first round picks out for Curnow. Or we’re losing a best 22 player either for draft capital or to Carlton.

100%

Allen is less $$$, no draft capital, younger and of good character. We also then have no issues getting our academy rorts.

Both have injury concerns. Curnow has the higher ceiling but whether that is going to be true going forward, isn’t worth the cost to find out.

If OA backfires it won’t be good. But if you recruited curnow on the $$ and with the draft cost, it would suck quite badly!

I think your trust is misplaced
I’m not sure that’s fair.

Ah Chee has proven a number of times he can nail a set shot under huge pressure. The Adelaide game we drew last year, the prelim final against Geelong, the Grand Final when the stakes were still high. I’m sure there’s others.

Hipwood is certainly far less consistent in front of goals. Lots of his kicks don’t make clean contact, often hitting the outside of his boot. He’s a far better field kick.

If Neale does leave, it would be sad but we can cover him now which we couldn’t a couple of years back and he seems to be showing signs of slowing down anyway which you would expect at his age. Would love for him to stay but he helped get us a flag, so no begrudging if he does.

I'm giving Hippy a bit of love. I've never been a great fan and may well have yelled over the fence a few times at him but I can see him getting too many beatings lately from the fans. Flexibility - That's his selling point. Last year against the Suns he was moved back out of necessity and we won and it started a real roll around we will fight to the end. This year he has helped out again where needed, forward, back and in the ruck. Zane Zakostelsky in Reserves is the only one close playing all those positions, so love to Hippy, much maligned and frustrating but he is a keeper for me because he is a 100% team player, 100% effort even if misguided at times, then sometimes, just sometimes, brilliant.

Losing the sub and adding a 5th player on the bench seems to be gathering steam. Wonder what our approach to that will be.
Given our penchant for playing 2 rucks even with the 4 + 1 sub rule I think there is almost no doubt the 5th player on our bench would be a pure ruck.

Eg. Starting 23 rucks in 2026- Sam Draper & Henry Smith. Which would leave the man with glass knees Oscar Allen with no need for any ruck time.

Caveat- If Greg Swann as mooted brings in the throw the ball in/up ASAP around the ground thus meaning a "ruck" would sometimes not be able to get to the contest does that mean the 200+cm ruckman becomes less important.
