Daniel Annabel, Levi Ashcroft, Sam Marshall, Will Ashcroft, Jaspa Fletcher, Cam Rayner, Zac Bailey, Hugh McCluggae, Jarrod Berry... Josh Dunkley(3 seasons?), Lachie Neale(2 seasons?).

9 of these mids/potential mids have at least 5 seasons left after this one in them.

I think our midfield looks in pretty good shape.

Dunkley - 191cm stopper right now
Berry - 192cm winger, we need him on wing for his gut running and D50 coverage
Rayner - 187cm 3rd tall, won't make it as full time mid.

Apart from the 3 bigger bodies above, rest are all in the 175-185 bracket. That's our gap in my opinion.

I wonder if Rayner can improve his endurance further so he can play more midfield time, he seems to have made a substantial improvement from 2023-24 to this season. He is an inside bull who can also burst from stoppages, very useful as a forward as well though, if he could go to a 70/30 mid/forward that would be ideal IMO.

I really do think Cam still has a lot of improvement in him.

So we need to find Bont 2.0. Easy.

That would be an asset if he could.

But I honestly don't think he has it in him and the best value we get out of him is the way we're playing him now.

Giving him extended M/F time would burn him out and takeaway his greatest gift which is the explosive impact he can have on games. I'm fairly sure the coaches think this as well.

We'd love Bont or Cripps but as long as the talented players we have put in and do their job we end up with the same result . It's something they've struggled to achieve in some games this year.

If a good inside bull came along that would be cream on the cake and obviously help us greatly but they don't grow on trees and it's not much use chasing one unless they're gettable ,durable and good . Otherwise get our current M/F to consistently turn up .

Our midfield stocks & it's future is looking just fine. Continuous discounted access to top 10 / top 20 players for a few years now (not our fault, just adhering to the rules) have us set up extremely well for the next ten years in that department.

Nothing stands still & It's always a work in progress, but it's a significant advantage we have moving forward to be able to spend time focusing on other areas of the ground & bringing in trade targets with that core already here.

My ideal wing rotation would be Berry, Fletcher and give Marshall a crack at the 3rd wheel wing role for the Pies, Swans games to see how he goes in full games.

Need Bailey as the elite small forward with Charlie and Kai being mostly down on form or injured this season.
It's funny how we based this year on banking the wins when we could to be fit and firing at the back end leading into finals.

Just shows plans and expectations never really work out. Footy is about adapting the best you can to whatever circumstances are served up. Everyone was saying we had an embarrassment of riches in the back half , how are we ever going to fit them all in.

Well that was a miscalculation. But it looked a logical presumption at the time.

the last thing id want the club investing in is plodder midfielders who are list cloggers at other teams. berry has been terrific on the wing - why are we trying to force him inside?
It's if we need a bigger bodied midfielder. If Marshall looks ready to take the next step, then that would be a way to give him the opportunity.

Pretty much what I have been thinking.

Not sure if people are aware, but Marshall won our time trial this preseason. He's not a slouch when it comes to gut running. He's also a better kick than Berry. He's probably the closest player to Fletcher on our list.

Worth a try this week for sure!

Yes Day is ahead of either of our current rucks, as a forward, perhaps not “way” ahead. I recall that the yank absolutely dominated Day in the centre square last time we met. Or was that just a nightmare?
That was a nightmare!

I don’t see any calls for concern when it comes to midfield depth. We will have enough talent there to counter any size concerns imo.

Forward line is the major issue imo. Should be getting two more Kpfs over the next three years.

A small pressure forward is needed too. Lohmann isn’t really that type but he’s arguably the closest we have? Thin stock.

Hence the Oscar Allen pursuit, I am big on Ty Gallop as well but could be a couple of years away.

Raphael Geesu from our academy could be the small forward, he has been off the radar though, I thought his form may have dropped off, only found out a week or so ago that he tore his hamstring pretty badly and hasn't been playing.

Small pressure forwards should be easy to pick up, all it requires is desire and innate speed... small forward attacking craft is the difficult trait to find.

Tom Morris’ massive trade update on 25 AFL players
Sam Draper
... The ruck carousel is in full swing, with Sam Draper weighing up more money and the prospect of immediate success in Brisbane versus his growing interests outside footy with podcasts and the like in Melbourne. I think it’s more likely he goes to Brisbane than stays at Essendon.
Brandon Starcevich
... while free agent Brandon Starcevich and West Coast is on the table.
Oscar Allen
... is off to Brisbane.
