FWIW, an update on Starc.

Unless West Coast offer him 'everything', I don't think he would want to be part of a rebuild. Freo could be a real option, with maybe the carrot of potential midfield time.

I really hope he stays, because he, Payne and to a lesser extent Answerth, are the three defenders that are prepared to stand under the high ball in defence and get whacked.

West coast will be able to offer him hundreds of thousands more than is given their cap situation

Lets see if Allen spends a lot of time talking to him after the WCE game at the GABBA in a few weeks.

Maybe they’ll swap guernseys postgame

I reckon, by the end of the season, Ty Gallop and Henry Smith will make all of this a moot point.
I think Day will get the first few games, but I would like to see Fort (if fully fit) given first opportunity. Ty looks a longer term proposition, and should be pushing hard next year for a regular spot.

Ben Keays found out Payne is pretty fast, and whilst it won't happen, I would have loved to see Payne given a go forward during the preseason. He could have been our Hawkins, as we don't have a big body forward, with Eric and a second year Logan Morris (who is good), we could do with a more robust, bigger forward. Perhaps in the immediate term that is Fort and or Oscar (resting forward at times) and or Smith. I can't see Dizzy playing that big robust stand in the square forward role.
Interesting decisions for the next few games.

I know, I know its been a long time ago now but we have have indigenous kids go off the rails before - Albert Proud and Ryan Hooper and both were local boys with local families and we never managed to help them out. Maybe we learned a lot as a club since then in how to manage the situation or in how to avoid the situation. Then we had party boy Fevola, hmmmm we certainly didn't manage that one well. I get the feeling we have learned to recruit a 'type' of player, a certain personality type and not just anyone.

JUH, and I don't know, only from what I've read and different commentators have said doesn't seem to fit 'our type' no matter the price.

Nah, JUH will cost a lot and we're doing alright with our trade targets so far.

Happy to pick up Mitch Lewis or Oscar Allen instead of Jamarra. He'll be like another Fev trade based on current trajectory, so don't want.

JUH knows we have academy rorts and is tanking his value to the point of a mercy trade for a third rounder. Bless you JUH. Allegedly pulling my a gun on Rory Lobb is really selling it.

Hawthorn emerges as latest suiter for Oscar Allen but Brisbane still lead the race for West Coast captain
Brisbane remains the front runner to secure the Eagles’ co-captain should he depart his home State at the end of the season, but the Hawks have thrown their hat in the ring as a serious contender.
The Eagles are yet to put an acceptable long-term deal on the table to Allen’s management and it is believed the Hawks, like Brisbane, are prepared to offer a top-end, long-term contract.
West Coast has so far only offered a medium-term contract.
...
The West Australian understands the offers were in excess of $1 million per season and would run for seven to 10 years. One of the clubs also offered the captaincy.

There is zero chance either us, or the Hawks will have offered the captaincy.

Any team with cap space and the need for a key forward will be in contact with his manager until he signs or indicates he is gettable.

We can all look forward to articles this vague until his decision is known.
Does St Kilda need a captain and is Allen a massochist?

The more I hear about the Oscar link the less likely he will come (in my opinion). We have been good at keeping these things quiet

Sometimes yes, other times our interest has been pretty clear well put from the trade period. Think our interest in Joe was clear from late July from memory. Everyone on bigfooty knew about Charlie Cameron very early in 2017 too.

Reporting on trades and free agency has started to come earlier and earlier and this is a management group that loves to negotiate by media - so very possibly a contract ploy with west coast, but I’d bet our interest is genuine.

The latest story from the West newspaper referenced a story from last time Oscar was out of contract in 2023. That was when he was possibly offered a 10 year contract and the captaincy of a club (some WC fans believe it was Essendon).

West Coast have reportedly only offered Oscar a 4 year extension (which was offered late last year).

Risking a player like JUH when you already have the makings of a dynasty list is not worth it. He won't be coming without being on significant money. That limits our ability to retain players like Starc. Id rather pay and keep Starc than have a 60 percent chance JUH pans out. Physical issues are easier to risk and assess and gamble on all Joe Daniher. Mental things are much less tangible to risk assess. Having a well set midfield and defense goes much further towards securing a premiership than having an S class forward. We did it with Joe but Collingwood did it with nobody significant. Demons tall forwards included a fading Ben Brown. It shows that premierships can be won in all sorts of systems. You would rather maximise your upside than try and manufacture a risky trade.

If Allen picks them over us, I wonder if they'll be willing to get trade Mitch Lewis for less than they otherwise would. Lewis only has one more year left on his contract after this one.
Came to post the same thing. Looks like we've gone for a each way bet on both Lewis snd Allen. Hawks may be doing a counter bid to cover themselves.

I caught of a radio interview with Simpson about recruitment changes over the last few years (was very much talking about Allen). He was very open about how a few clubs like Hawthorn have made big strides about how early and big they pitch to players. He talked about how West Coast had been caught out and were behind the eight ball. If you are only asking 12 months out it's probably way too late.

He said it was true about Mitchell going to weddings to sit next to players and pitch to them. And about getting current players wives to work on the targets partners as well
