Yeah the adelaide link is clearly legit. But west coast being thrown up by a WA paper very late in the process?
It's probably because his family is there so they just throw it up.

He's been one of my favourite players but I'm comfortable enough if we lose him. We've been paying him unders for years and now have to front up with a marquee deal to hang on to him. Obviously I'd love to keep him but we're stuck with Charlie likely on big bucks , will have to sweeten up Lohman and Bailey at some point so there's a lot to weigh up if we're bringing Allen in to the forward line.

Ironically I doubt we get to the GF without Starcevich and Ah Chee in our team last year and now there are reasons why inking LT deals for both could be problematic.

Things change quickly in footy don't they. You've only got to look at the big clubs down the bottom of the ladder to see how easy it is to sign the wrong players up for too long a time.

I feel like every couple of years WC try to raid us. Tried to get Rich, got Yeo, got Redden, got Witherden, drafting Charlies brother, whispers of Dev every other year, Starce talked about for the last 8 months, now Ah Chee.

I get we're likely getting Allen but geez, go get some other clubs' WA boys.
Can’t blame West Coast for “raiding” Witherden.

We told Witherden to go find another team, as it was unlikely he would be picked for the senior team again.

ermm I went and read the West Coast board trade thread

Pay Allen enough to generate pick 2 or else we bid on Annable
Pick 32 for Ah Chee + Starce or else we bid on Annable

This bid on Annable card seems to be played over n over to win all trade scenarios over there :D

They keep being delusional over there. I luckily only have to deal with Scotland and the Eagles2go guy on the main board - both of which are hellbent on having the Eagles bid on Annable if they don't get their desired deal, not realizing that the club are prepared to match any pick for Annable.

West Coast fans on Big Footy are just like Carlton on Big Footy in 2018-2020; they're just silly. Starce I think is 85% gone, whereas Ah Chee is the same but to stay, neither of which are known to want to go to West Coast.

That aside, West Coast as a club are surely smart enough to not bid on our guys, as we may (eventually) return the favor.

- Witherden was forced out, 100% never playing for our club again

- Cameron was never coming here as he was tied to their NGA

- Dev should've left last year/the year before so we got max capital for him (was also very unlikely to play in the 1s again)

- Starce has had stuff come up since he bought a house, is his fault for always popping up

I imagine we're walking a bit of a tightrope managing salary cap figuring out how to keep the young recruits happy, while maintaining the senior core. Players will always be poached from top teams. I don't want Starce to leave, but understand the possible financial motivation. I do remember hearing him on the Roar Deal podcast (back when it was run by the club), and he didn't seem as wedded to the young group at the time. Cal had an absolute purple patch last season, but has not been as good this season - but if as reported he's being underpaid, then he's entitled to get the most out of his next contract.

Signing McLuggage, Berry, Rayner to long term deals was definitely a win. Signing Hippy I still think was the right move considering the reported salary. Currently Charlie's 3-year extension is looking questionable - but a change in mindset, team structure or whatever could see him return to more consistent form.

Keeping or releasing premiership heroes is always challenging, but what it does do is open up best 23 list spots for other young guns and keeps things fresh. As you point out, hanging onto the senior players can be devastating for a club long term so we do need some turnover.

I see we are doing the opposite of what West Coast did, not offering big deals just because they were part of a premiership but be more measured (injuries, longevity etc) while keeping the cap open for the upcoming talent coming through. We're not perfect but trying to be as balanced as possible.

Hope it all works out in the end with players leaving and others waiting in the wings who can step in and cover the void.

Yes West Coast just gave everyone from that team long contracts on top $

Now they want a priority pick.

Hear me out…

McGovern would be a better option than Doedee, Brain or Joyce. Payne gone for a fair chunk of next year, and Starc a potential out.

If the dollars weren’t ridiculous I’d be happy enough with him as coverage. Can take a good intercept mark, and is relatively reliable by foot. Has also played a fair chunk of games the last few years.

The other one I’d look at is Frost from the Hawks. I’d be very surprised if he’s not on another list next year, and I’d also be surprised if we aren’t into these types of players given our injuries and potential departures.

Sorry but Mitch McGovern would be a close second to that fraud Brayden Preuss who coasted along with a career of being carried around. McGovern had that lightning strike type 5 goal game against Carlton playing for Crows which seduced them into the first contract and he's pretty much average across first 4 years. 2023 - his best season got him 10th in best and fairest.

I'd rather we go and get say Buku Khamis or Harry Arnold even to play that role. Mitch McGovern would be such a bad downgrade in all our other club trade selections over all these years. We usually go for elite at some point, injured now, can come for a bargain etc. He doesn't fit any of that profile.

I'd have thought McGovern would be signed as a break-glass option. Just because we get linked to a player, doesn't necessarily mean they going to be best 22.

then let's break the glass with some VFL up n comers.
McGovern will breakdown before breaking any glass.

You did read the bit about "attracting some interest"? Not least that it's a Tom Morris tweet. This is what good list managers do - assess all the options available. But it's hardly newsworthy enough to tweet "Brisbane are sniffing around some bloke from Weribee".

If we are paying him the minimum wage then fine. Not my type of player but with Payne injured and Dizzy unsigned and us not having draft picks to trade for players, there would be worse options.

Nor mine. Not many were happy about Darragh Joyce being recruited - he's not flash, but he's depth.

Makes sense to go after another defender, as we don't have a lot of the tall variety (Andrews, Gardiner, Lester, Doodee, then Joyce). Carlton would give up McGovern for cheap if he were to leave.

And, unlike Gardiner, he can be a legitimate swing man.

One of my kids and a friend , an avid Swans supporter , watched the game on Saturday behind the goals at ground level.

The only comment of interest I got back is that Andrews is absolutely amazing , to see the ground he covered and his reach for spoils and timing for marks. He was a class above anyone else. Fwiiw.
